We feel ‘paralysed’ and are in just too much pain! We need daring friends - who through kindness and compassion - get us to Jesus somehow! We do not need more talk from ‘Job’s comforters’ who offered poor Job nothing but ‘theology’! And it was a risk. No doubt, some in the crowd wanted to stop these friends of the paralysed man from such a daring act of kindness! Some today make the same objections. Pope Francis, however, gives us clear leadership. The Holy Father recently told the new Cardinals on February 15th that the church over the course of history has repeatedly needed to call to conver- sion those who are gripped by close-mindedness to “any kind of openness … any action outside of their mental and spiritual boxes ... any caress or sign of tenderness which does not fit into their usual thinking and their ritual purity.” And so over to us. This is the urgent pastoral question of our times – how can the ‘paralysed’ among us receive the healing power of Jesus? This is not a matter of wanting to ‘change’ the teaching of Jesus but living it more deeply! This is not a ‘softening’ of the Gospel message but, on the contrary, all about an expansion of our hearts so that the kindness of God can heal…As Pope Francis said so eloquently in his April 11th Misericordiae Vultus Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy... 3rd Sunday of EASTER Year B, April 18th-19th, 2015

‘How can the ‘paralysed’ among us receive the

healing power of Jesus?”

Friends,

The Irish poet Seamus Heaney died a couple of

years ago. In his last volume of poetry (Human

Chain) - especially in the poem ‘Miracle’ - Hea-

ney shares with us a powerful lesson learned

from his own vulnerability after suffering a

stroke:

Not the one who takes up his bed and walks

But the ones who have known him all along,

And carry him in—Their shoulders numb, the ache and stoop deeplocked

In their backs, the stretcher handles Slippery with sweat.

And no let-up

Until he's strapped on tight, made tiltable

And raised to the tiled roof,

then lowered for healing. Be mindful of them as they stand and wait

For the burn of the paid-out ropes to cool, Their slight lightheadedness and incredulity

to pass,

those ones who had known him all along.

He deftly points to those who brought ‘Good

News’ (i.e. his evangelisers) into his life by

their acts of mercy and kindness reflecting on

the miracle of the lame man.

I love the ‘creative’ act of kindness of the lame

man’s friends: "finding no way to bring him in

because of the crowd, they went up on the roof

and let him down with his bed through the tiles

into the middle of the crowd” (cf. Luke 5:18-20)

Now that was imaginative!

The Melbourne poet Philip Hughes remarks that

the usual homily on the miracle of this lame

man rightly focuses on his faith and hope. But

as Hughes so beautifully points out: "Heaney…

with a certain sense of humour about the whole

affair, draws attention not just to the faith and

hope of the man's friends, but also their charity.

It is they who will go to any trouble to help

their mate in his hour of need. The poet even

takes on the tone of the preacher, asking us to

'Be mindful of them'."

Yes, we all need to ‘be mindful of them’ - as we

too depend so much on the simple kindness of

others to get through life… especially when sick

or depressed. For all of us are fragile and needy

- not so far from the condition of the paralysed

lame man in the Gospels.

Often, however, like him, we just can’t bring

ourselves to Jesus. We feel ‘paralysed’ and are

in just too much pain! We need daring friends -

who through kindness and compassion - get us

to Jesus somehow! We do not need more talk

from ‘Job’s comforters’ who offered poor Job

nothing but ‘theology’!

And it was a risk. No doubt, some in the crowd

wanted to stop these friends of the paralysed

man from such a daring act of kindness!

Some today make the same objections. Pope

Francis, however, gives us clear leadership. The

Holy Father recently told the new Cardinals on

February 15th that the church over the course of

history has repeatedly needed to call to conver-

sion those who are gripped by close-mindedness

to “any kind of openness … any action outside

of their mental and spiritual boxes ... any caress

or sign of tenderness which does not fit into

their usual thinking and their ritual purity.”

And so over to us. This is the urgent pastoral

question of our times – how can the ‘paralysed’

among us receive the healing power of Jesus?

This is not a matter of wanting to ‘change’ the

teaching of Jesus but living it more deeply! This

is not a ‘softening’ of the Gospel message but,

on the contrary, all about an expansion of our

hearts so that the kindness of God can heal…As

Pope Francis said so eloquently in his April

11th Misericordiae Vultus Bull of Indiction of

the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy... "God’s

mercy, rather than a sign of weakness, is the

mark of his omnipotence."
