COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

January 12, 20158:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

This season, college football enters a new four-team playoff era. The for-mat is simple: the best four teams, two semifinals played in bowl games and a championship game played in a different city each year. It’s the biggest innovation in the sport in decades.

How It WorksA 13-member selection committee will rank the top 25 teams. The top

four ranked teams will play in two semifinal games on New Year’s Day. The two winning teams will play in the championship game in North Texas Jan. 12, 2015.

CriteriaThe committee will rank each team based on championships won,

strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparative outcomes of common opponents and other factors.

RankingsOn Oct. 28, the committee will release the first of seven weekly rankings

of the top 25 teams. The final ranking will be released Dec. 7. It will be the seeding for the playoff.

AccessEvery FBS team will have equal access to the playoff based on its

performance. No team or conference will qualify automatically. There will be no limit on the number of teams from a conference that can make the playoff.

Championship MondayThe championship game will be on Monday night every year.

Conferences Manage The EventThe FBS conferences will manage the College Football Playoff. All 10

conferences are members of the new entity CFP Administration, LLC.

Selection Committee Responsibilities• Select the top four teams for the playoff, rank them and assign

them to semifinal sites.• Rank the next group of teams to play in other New Year’s bowls if

berths are available.• Select the highest-ranked champion from the five conferences

without New Year’s bowl contracts.• Assign teams to New Year’s bowls• Create competitive matchups• Attempt to avoid rematches of regular-season games and repeat

appearances• Consider geography

Participants In New Year’s BowlsBoth participants in the Orange, Rose and Sugar bowls are contracted

outside the playoff arrange ment (Big Ten and Pac-12 to Rose Bowl; SEC and Big 12 to Sugar Bowl; ACC to Orange Bowl against the high-est ranked available team from the SEC, Big Ten and Notre Dame). If a conference champion qualifies for the playoff, then the bowl will choose a replacement from that conference. When those bowls host the semifi-nals and their contracted conference champions do not qualify, then the dis placed champion(s) will play in the other New Year’s bowls.

The Fiesta, Cotton and Peach Bowls will host displaced conference champions and the top-ranked champion from a non-contract confer-ence. The highest-ranked available teams will fill any other berths. The Selection Committee will make the pairings.

AMERICAN ON TELEVISION

The 2014 football season will be the first under the American Athletic Conference’s comprehensive television partnership with ESPN.

The new arrangement began with the 2013-14 basketball season and will be in place through the 2019-20 academic year. The contract provide unprecedented exposure on two of the industry leaders in sports television.

In football, the new contract calls for all conference-controlled games — which encompasses all conference games and home nonconference games — to be televised. Nearly 90 percent of those games will be carried on either national broadcast or national cable platforms.

In addition to contracted games on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPNews, American Athletic Conference teams will regularly appear on CBS Sports Network through a sublicensing agreement with ESPN. Further, The American will make appearances on the SEC Network, the Big Ten Network, the Pac-12 Network, Fox Sports 1, FSN and Fox College Sports in selected road nonconference games.

Additional nonconference games will be available on ESPN3 — ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network, giving fans an online destination that delivers thousands of global sports events annually, including more than 400 college football games. It is available at no cost to approximately 86 million homes with a high-speed Internet connection from an affiliated provider, as well as to approximately 21 million U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel. It is also accessible through ESPN on Xbox LIVE and on smartphones and tablets through the WatchESPN app through an affiliated provider.

WatchESPN delivers live access to ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3, ESPNEWS, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Buzzer Beater/Goal Line on computers, smartphones, tablets, Xbox and Apple TV. It is currently accessible in 55 million households nationwide to fans who receive ESPN’s linear networks as part of their video subscription from Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Verizon FiOS TV, Comcast Xfinity TV, Midcontinent Communications, Cablevision, Cox, Charter, AT&T U-verse or Google Fiber.

Currently, ESPN and ESPN2 both reach nearly 100 million house-holds across the nation. ESPNU’s reach has expanded to 74 million households. CBS Sports Network is available to 100 million homes and may be seen on a digital basic cable package in all American Athletic Conference markets.
