WCBA presents Home & Garden Festival The Wayne County Builders Association (WCBA) will present its annual Home and Garden Festival on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27 at Ladore Lodge Camp Retreat & Conference Center in Waymart.

This free public festival features fun for the whole family, with indoor and outdoor exhibits and many new offerings. In addition to top-quality items and services for your home—like the latest in cabinetry, landscaping, gardening, appliances, home decor, windows, doors and more—this year’s event will include a new Arts & Crafts Tent Village with over 30 vendors and an array of delicious food options.

Returning events include the Electronic Recycling Drop-off, Flower Pot Contest and Children’s LEGO Building Contest. A silent auction will be held through Saturday and Sunday, and the Spectacular Outdoor Living Raffle will give festival guests a chance to win dozens of outdoor living essentials from patio furniture to power tools and more. Tickets, $5, will be on sale throughout the weekend. 100% of the proceeds from the Spectacular Outdoor Living Raffle will benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children program.

This year’s Home and Garden Festival is supported by Bold Gold Media Group and Eastern Propane. Admission is compliments of Wayne Bank. Festival hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27.

Situated within the Water Gap, Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) takes pride in presenting a hands-on experience in environmental education geared toward contributing to an appreciation of nature. PEEC Executive Director Jeff Rosalsky invites all to “Enjoy spring and spend time outdoors after this long winter,” adding “PEEC has a variety of interesting activities every weekend including nature hikes, fly fishing and nature photography classes.” As we blossom further into the warmer weather PEEC is offering a lineup of activities some include a peek at the amphibians stirring about. Their program Salamanders, Frogs, and More is set for April 27 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will pay five bucks to trek through mud and water with their collection jars and nets ready to capture a closer look into the world of these crawling creatures. May 4 brings PEEC’s free morning Wildflower Walk starting at 9 a.m. Join local flower expert Josie D’Alessandro as she offers informative tips on identifying foliage. To experience the wild side of the Pocono Mountains, go for a spring walk through the lush woods and meadows anywhere in the region. A diverse range of wildlife abounds in the Poconos’ largely untouched tracts of pristine acreage, giving people the opportunity to enjoy natural surroundings that they otherwise would not have access to. A leisurely stroll through the woodlands will reward hikers with scenes of natural beauty that are as they have been for thousands of years. Delicate wildflowers and other flora flourish in the sun for hikers and walkers to enjoy. Among the plant life of the region is included a very rare species called rhodora that, within the United States, is found only here in the Pocono Mountains and in the wilds of New Hampshire. This smallest member of the wild azalea family grows locally in damp areas such as along ponds, in wetlands, and in pine barrens. The plants grow to a height of about three feet and can be distinguished by their pale green leaves. People come from hundreds of miles to search for these rare shrubs, which bloom a beautiful purplish-pink flower in mid-May. This plant is restricted to glaciated areas such as the top of the Pocono Plateau, and if you keep your eyes open you might sight a patch during your nature walk. Another interesting resident of the Poconos is the pitcher plant. This carnivorous foliage can be found in wet areas including bogs and the sluggish edges around ponds. Identify these plants by the large tubular pitcher and its sizable flower about two feet off the ground. This plant attracts the insects which are its prey by secreting an odor that bugs find irresistible. The unlucky insect moves in closer to investigate and slips down the tube into the plant’s digestive tract. Patches of this sly predator can be seen in Tobyhanna State Park, in Long Pond, in Tannersville and many other wet areas throughout the mountains. Numerous animals are active this time of the year and just like people they are out enjoying the sunshine in the Pocono Mountains! It’s lots of fun to find and identify animal tracks, and if you have the time, to follow them and see the tale of a day in the life of a deer or rabbit. Although it’s easier to follow animal tracks in the snow, it is possible to find animal sign in the warmer months. Look in the soft mud around the many streams and lakes in the area for the tracks of an otter or raccoon. In stands of hardwood, spot patches of tussled leaves where a grouse may have scratched while foraging for berries or a fox had disturbed while in pursuit of a wily cottontail. Deer paths and other animal trails are prime areas to investigate when in search of animal prints. Those who take the time to slow down and look can piece together many little woodland dramas by reading the abundant sign anywhere in this mountain land. Bring a pair of binoculars on your walk to get a closer look at the many birds singing their songs and fluttering about. A great variety of bird species may be observed, from noisy downy woodpeckers to brilliant red cardinals to the shy and elusive grebe. These wonderful creatures are a joy to behold and, as any bird watcher will testify, it is great fun to encounter and identify as many species as you can. Babbling brooks and pure, fresh streams flow nearly everywhere in the Poconos. They criss-cross our landscape, connecting various lakes, ponds and wetlands. A walk along a stream or lake will reveal many creatures and their homes. Crayfish, frogs, minnows, turtles, even sport fish such as native brook trout can be observed in and around the ample water supply of the area. These sources of fresh, clear water are what the whole ecosystem relies on to live, and thankfully the Pocono Mountains have lots of them! Whether you choose to explore one of the many local State Parks and State Gamelands or you begin your hike right in your own backyard, vibrant Pocono wildlife can be seen and heard everywhere around you. Spend a quiet afternoon enjoying the unspoiled natural environment within the Pocono Mountains. Now with Spring just around the corner, race grounds are being transformed to accommodate new nail biting twists and turns as Tough Mudder gets set to take place April 19th and 20th. The renowned athletic test of strength and endurance last hit the mountains in 2011 at Pocono Manor. Months of planning and community-wide efforts led to its return recognizing Pocono Raceway as a favorable choice for

Though Mudder officials early on kept locked lips about this year’s treacherous treks, thousands of adrenaline junkies geared up in advance with training to take on the challenge. Take heed not to underestimate the complexity of whatever exhilarating course TM cooks up. The clever crew recently setup teasers to taunt teams with photos and details of feats like Cliff Hanger and Dirty Ballerina popping up on their website as the date approached. Preparation recommended by prior participants started months in advance. Endurance training, like running, is a plus; as teams tend to keep a steady pace trotting through the course. Nutrition is always a good regimen to follow. Many urge others to “Carb it up” the night before suggesting a hearty meal of pasta. As the day approaches to literally strap on durable running gear, comfort and flexibility are key. A few even propose using duck tape wrapped around running shoes as tales of foot wear lost to the clutches of man made mud bogs still linger. While some admit swaying from their own advice in the past, they also confess they paid the price as fatigue set in vowing to stay on course in an effort to aid Tough Mudder’s mission to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project and focus on encouraging “Teamwork over race time.”

It’s that time of year again—Little League baseball, and let’s not forget softball, is upon us. A time for the young and old alike to take in a local game at one of the many ballfields scattered about the region.

The infamous late Pocono snow appears to have subsided with cleanup crews crossing their fingers the only mounds to maintain will be the pitcher’s in hopes of a timely start to another season.

Area leagues are abuzz with coaches gathering kids and setting practices to get ready. Opening day festivities add equal excitement as league players come together for food, fun and festivities.

Pocono Mountain East Little League is set with an April 26 kickoff for the kids at The Roof field in Paradise. Don’t Feed the Bears

Viewing wildlife in their natural habitat can be a wonderful, exhilarating way to connect more deeply with nature. However, certain precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of the animals should always be taken:

Don’t feed wild animals. Feeding wild animals puts them at great risk for becoming addicted to foods that are not natural for them. It also reduces their ability to forage for themselves. Wild animals who are fed by humans are more likely to become aggressive towards people.

Limit time spent observing animals. Encounters with people can be stressful to animals and can alter their normal behaviors. Half an hour is reasonable.

Stay clear of mothers with young. Nests, dens, and rookeries are especially vulnerable to human disturbance. Never herd, chase, or separate a mother from her young or try to handle pups.

Resist the temptation to “rescue” wild animals, especially babies. Mom is usually watching from a safe distance. If an animal appears sick, get professional help by calling park rangers or animal control officers.

Keep pets on a leash or leave them at home. Both pets and wild animals can be hurt if bitten. There is also danger of disease transmission.

Don’t litter. Be responsible for leaving a place better than you found it. Carry a trash bag and pick up litter when you see it.

WHY THE LAKE NAOMI~TIMBER TRAILS MARKET IS HEALTHY(While other markets around the country struggle - is this a buyer’s market?)Real estate markets have always been local in nature. Apartments in New York City are still commanding loftyprices, and homes in the Charlotte area are still increasing. Yet, rampant speculative building in many parts of thecountry nearly collapsed their markets. To perpetuate the nonsense, strategic financing schemes lured custom-ers deeper into the boiling cauldron. For home buyers and for speculators alike, mortgages were easily obtainedwith little or no documentation. If you had a pulse, a mortgage was waiting. Don't bother with the details... priceswill always go up to cover the excesses. Sadly, it’s not always so.

Thankfully, Lake Naomi~Timber Trails has been a different story. During the forty plus years we’ve been here atLake Naomi there have been some violent swings in both the real estate market and the stock market. Very re-cently, the stock market’s acrobatics were enough to give any sane person a concussion. Here in our local realestate market, we’ve remained rather steady. Did you know the average sale in the last 12 months is lower by aminuscule 1%? From June 2008, the median sale is up 7%!** How is that possible? First and foremost, we are notin a primary home market. The vast majority of our homes are discretionary purchases and our clientele is morefinancially stable and financially adept than the average first-time home buyer. If our clients aren’t paying cash,they’re taking plain-vanilla fixed-rate conventional mortgages. We dodged the scathing sub-prime mortgagefiasco. Too few lots remain for overbuilding or speculative building to ever be a problem.

Every year, at Memorial Day, we hold our breath anticipating the new season. After reading in the media about theweak markets in other parts of the country, we were particularly curious this year. Memorial Day weekend marksthe start of our main selling season, and we couldn't have been more surprised or delighted.

Over Memorial Day weekend, we sold five houses, one in Lake Naomi for $790,000 and one in Timber Trails for$450,000. It was most encouraging to observe multiple offers come in on one of the properties. Neither deal wasgiven away. One sold for 90.2% of the asking price, and the other for 92%.

This was one of the best starts for any summer season in memory!

** Lake Naomi is a diverse community of home values, ranging from under $200,000 to over $1,000,000.A single million dollar lakefront sale can significantly skew the average, making the median sale price a far moresignificant indicator of market trends.

CAMP MINSI PROJECT STRENGTHENS OUR PROPERTY VALUES(An assist from an unusual source)Hopefully, you have already read the article in the Lake Naomi Club newsletter, “Reflections,” that explains howthe Wildlands Conservancy, the Monroe County Open Space Program, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylva-nia have created a plan to protect the 1,242 acre Camp Minsi from future development or commercializa-tion. Camp Minsi is the Boy Scouts of America property immediately to the east of Lake Naomi that residesalong Stillwater Lake. The exact method the property will be protected is not significant. What is significant,however, is the fact that all that land will never be developed in competition to Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

Virtually all the lakes of any significance in the Poconos have already been subdivided and developed. CampMinsi is one of the remaining exceptions that has access to a sizeable lake, and, is right in our back yard. Now,however, we will no longer have to wonder what will be built there. The answer is nothing... and in perpetuity.

The property is about a third larger than Timber Trails, so it had the potential to be a competitor for many years.By removing potential development, folks looking for a quality lake community will have their sights focusedmore acutely than ever on Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

New roads have enhanced access to Lake Naomi, and the lack of meaningful competition will have a substan-tial effect on our future property values. We didn’t create the law of supply and demand - we merelywatch its effect.

The Jubilee: Generations of Enjoyable Eats Drive past Van Gilders Jubilee in Pocono Pines on any given day and you’ll see a crowd. Is it their famous wing nights reeling them in? Perhaps it’s their walls lined with photos inviting a peek into the area’s past? One thing is certain; this popular Pocono eatery has been carving a niche in the memories of patrons since Bill and Jean Van Gilder first signed papers the day after their 1968 wedding.

“It’s part of our lives,” says Vicki Van Gilder. Sentiments echoed beyond her four siblings Bill, Cyndi, Jennifer and Laura; to their extended kin of regulars including locals and visitors that stretches well beyond the plateau.

Pat Evans joins friend of 40 years Linda Franks for a daily Cup of Joe and hotcakes noting her five year old grandson’s preference for the place. She tells of an interstate encounter at the Jersey Shore with a woman recalling her own family’s trips to “The Jube” after admiring his favorite t-shirt brandishing the insignia.

Jubilee waitress of 19 years Theresa Boyden adds her own spin on its draw. She suggests it’s the witty banter and family bond that guests share as she debates hot flashes over her preferred diagnosis of “power surges” igniting laughter in the seclusion of the pair’s booth.

It’s that lasting impression Vicki admires. She finishes telling of a comment received by a recent gift certificate winner during a Facebook promotion that says it all, “Give it to someone else who should experience The Jubilee.”

Tucked deep beneath an eight foot bed of snow inviting skiers, boarders and snowtubers to the excitement that is Camelback, lays the source of tranquil waters ready to offer another kind of tubing along Camelbeach’s Lazy River.

Filled with 50 gallon drums tipping the scale by over 1000 in numbers under layers of plywood; this summer hot spot for a relaxing cool down will soon see the light of day as crews prepare to make way for the summer months.

Camelbeach’s Lazy River patiently awaits its resurgenceunder an eight foot bed of snow

Since Camelbeach opened 17 years ago, crews have been laying it down then clearing it up with expertise. Reporting an amazing winter season for the resort’s 50th Anniversary; CB Director of Marketing Brian Bossuyt describes the task as uncovering a “Good mix of family rides.”

Over 2500 lounge chairs ready to share some shade under 800 palm trees, lie in wait for their turn in the full time transition set for Memorial Day weekend.

An alluring 4000 foot zipline sits dauntingly above snow covered trails waiting for the winter chill to subside. Opening in a few weeks, Bossuyt states this CBK Mountaintop Adventure challenge will join PA’s only mountain coaster along with over 100 aerial obstacles to wet the pallets of outdoor enthusiasts ready to strip off their snow gear for some warm weather fun.

He reports the year round excitement plans continue with an expansion on the horizon for the summer of 2015.

He points out construction well underway for the resort’s heated indoor waterpark including accommodations of over 450 suites. FoilTech roofing will make the indoor atmosphere surreal warming snow bodies fresh off the winter slopes.

When asked what makes the entire Camelback experience unique, he considers the mountain backdrop key to what sets it apart from other Northeast waterparks.

He finishes stating, “That’s why they say we’re a mountain of a waterpark.”
