Annual Harvest at Quiet V Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will host its 38th Annual

Harvest Festival on Saturday and Sunday, October 6 and 7 from

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Themed Going Green - Past and Present, this year’s

festival will include fun and educational activities that showcase planet-

friendly practices.

The festival’s many demonstrations emphasize the early American

act of repurposing through skills such as broom making, basketry,

spinning and weaving, yarn dyeing, tatting, coopering and more.

There will also be demonstrations of early meal preparation methods

including butter churning, Dutch oven cooking and outdoor brick

oven baking.

Enjoy family-friendly autumn entertainment at the Harvest Festival.

There will be hearty country food, live folk music and plenty of

activities for children including pony rides, storytelling, wagon rides and

more. The Civil War Encampment is an annual highlight at the Harvest

Festival. The authentic reenactment portrays the drill and everyday life

of 19th century soldiers and gives guests a glimpse into local history

and heritage.

Festivities will be held rain or shine throughout the weekend.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3 through 12.

Quiet Valley is located off Business Route 209 south of Stroudsburg. For

more information, visit www.quietvalley.org or call (570) 992-6161.

Ghost Tours at the Old Jail Museum Statuesquely situated above Jim Thorpe’s busy

streets is the legendary Old Jail Museum, the site of

the infamous Molly Maguire executions. For years, jail

employees have heard reports of suspicious disturbances.

Guests are encouraged to experience the chilling

encounters fi rsthand during weekly candlelit Ghost Tours

at the museum. The tours will be held on October 13, 20

and 27 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and detail the disturbing

feelings, strange voices and shadowy images reported

in the building. Organizers insist: this is not a

“haunted house.”

Tour admission costs $10 for adults and $7 for

students. The program is not recommended for children

under 12 years of age. More information is available at

www.theoldjailmuseum.com or by phone at (570)

325-5259.

Town History Jim Thorpe, founded as Mauch Chunk, has a colorful

history that dates back to the early 1800s. The town’s

proximity to rich coal stores in neighboring mountains

afforded it great wealth and importance. During its “golden

era” at the turn of the 20th century, Mauch Chunk was

known as the wealthiest town, per capita, in all of America.

Nearly 200 years later, much of the area’s Victorian

splendor remains intact. Historic dwellings such as the Asa

Packer Mansion Museum preserve details of the town’s

vibrant past. Information on the Asa Packer Mansion

Museum can be obtained at www.asapackermasion.com or

by calling (570) 325-3229.

Getting There Whether for shopping, dining, entertainment or

adventure, an autumn trip to Jim Thorpe is an ideal way

to spend a day. The historic town is short drive away from

New York City, and just an hour and fi fteen minutes from

Philadelphia. Visit www.jimthorpe.org to plan your retreat,

or call (570) 325-5810.
