Stewardship “The stone the builders rejected has become the corner stone…” (Mt 21:42) Jesus was the corner stone and He was rejected by the religious and political leaders of his day, as well as ordinary citizens. Living a stewardship lifestyle may cause you to be “rejected” by others in today’s society. For example, saying grace before a meal in a restaurant may attract some strange looks from some. But to others it is a sign that God is alive and well! Thank you to everyone who has responded to our annual Increased Offertory Program. Your prayers and financial support allow us to put our faith in action.

Ministry Highlights – PREP (Parish Religious Education Program) As we embark on our parish self-study, my columns this year will focus on our various parish ministries. We begin with one of our largest volunteer efforts – the Parish Religious Education Program. ~ Fr. Posey Each week, our Director of Religious Education, Sister Regina Rosarri McLallen, PREP office assistants Mary Alice Healy and Pam Heid, and a team of over 70 volunteer catechists, classroom assistants, and office assistants welcome 560 students. We have three sessions of PREP a week, an afternoon session at 4:45 on Tuesdays, an evening session at 7:00pm on Tuesdays and Sunday sessions in Spanish at 1:00pm, followed by our Spanish Mass at 2:30pm. Throughout the year, PREP classes cover the same curriculum as school students, using small groups for meaningful learning. Students in PREP participate in the annual collection for the Falls Church Children’s Center at Christmas, a canned goods collection at Thanksgiving to help our St. James Food Pantry, the Missionary Childhood Association, and the annual Operation Rice Bowl during Lent. Some classes also take field trips to the rectory or local service organizations. Many Catholics find that volunteering with the PREP program enhances their own understanding of the faith. Sister Regina provides catechists with formation in the catechetical theme of the year and weekly support via email as well as classroom visits. This year, some of our Grade 2 catechists are incorporating their training in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to provide instruction in a special way during sacramental preparation for First Penance and First Communion. Our middle school catechists take preparation for Confirmation seriously and encourage participation in FUSION, High School Youth Ministry and WorkCamp. Sister Regina also helps students who have missed sacraments through a special sacraments program. For High School students, Deacon Ed offers a weekly viewing of Catholicism, the groundbreaking series from Bishop Robert Barron. Every summer, the Vacation Bible School connects over 200 parishioners from infants through adults in a playful but meaningful exploration of the Gospel message PREP is a hopping and hopeful program, offering our parish children a vision of Christ’s kingdom on earth.

Share the Journey: Supporting Migrants Around the World On September 27, 2017, Pope Francis launched a global campaign to support immigrants and refugees around the world called “Share the Journey.” Our brothers and sisters often make perilous journeys, leaving their homelands because they are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict, poverty, persecution and violence. There are more refugees and internally displaced people now—over 65 million—than at any other time in recorded history. Our faith calls us to “love our neighbor,” to see Christ in those who are in greatest need, and to welcome newcomers seeking the security, peace, and opportunity they cannot find in their home countries.

We can join Pope Francis and the Church around the world, and share the journey with fellow children of God by:

Learning about their journeys. Read stories, watch videos, and pay attention to news that can help sensitize us to their reality. Then, share what you learn with others by:

Joining the #sharejourney campaign on social media! Learn more about and get involved in the “Share the Journey” global migration campaign at sharejourney.org.

Meeting immigrants and refugees. Contact your local Catholic Charities agency to learn how you can join or support their programs that serve immigrants and refugees. Saying a daily prayer for all people, and especially children, who have fled their homes in search of peace and safety.

Supporting the work of local and international Catholic agencies, like Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services, who help to care for the needs of immigrants and refugees in the United States and around the world.

Forty years ago, on September 18, 1977, the parish presented a gift of bells to their retiring pastor, Monsignor Paul V. Heller, at a Mass of Thanksgiving “in gratitude to God for his faithful priest.” Here is the “Story of the Bells,” told by Dan Schmidt, chairman of the Bell Committee, in the October 1980 edition of Round & About St. James. (Edited for length.)

Last week we reminisced about the initial planning for this tribute to Msgr. Heller. This week we remember their arrival and the joy they have brought to generations.

The bells arrived by boat and truck in Alexandria on September 12, 1977. Although it was 10:30 p.m., an excited bunch of committee members went down to the warehouse to look them over. On Saturday, September 17, Joe Baxter and I went down with our trucks to pick them up. There were many curious stares as we drove through the area with our treasures on open trucks. The committee and helpers spent the afternoon cleaning the grime of the trip from the bells and polishing them. That evening, while cooperative priests spirited Monsignor out to dinner, the bells were brought into the church and secreted in the baptistery (now the St. Anthony chapel). All the equipment necessary to move and install the ponderous bells was provided through the generosity of Bob Schwarzmann, a former parishioner.

Next morning, floral artist Bob Schottler decorated the bells with flowers and ribbons. The traditional ceremony of blessing the bells was incorporated into a Mass concelebrated by Bishops Russell, Hodges and Unterkoefler and forty other priests. The bells were brought forward during the offertory by the committee members and presented to an astonished and delighted Monsignor Heller. The rest is history.

THE BELLS : Part II

FOLLOWING THE MASS WITH THE BLESSING OF THE BELLS, THE BELLS WERE INSTALLED IN THE BELL TOWER OF THE CHURCH. IN THE FIRST PHOTO, THE COMMITTEE IS SHOWN HOISTING THE LARGEST BELL WITH EQUIPMENT LOANED BY BOB

SCHWARZMANN. IN THE MIDDLE PHOTO, THE THREE BELLS ARE IN POSITION IN THEIR STANDS READY FOR RINGING. IN THE THIRD PHOTO, MSGR. HELLER SHOWS HIS EXPRESSION OF PLEASURE AS HE PREPARES TO RING THE FIRST BELL

BEFORE THE 9:00 A.M. MASS ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1977.

These are the bells that ring out cries of gladness, calling worshippers to the Easter Vigil and to the noon Mass on Sundays.

The inscription on the main bell: Lord God Almighty, may each tone of this bell be a reminder to you of the dedication and devotion of your humble servant, Monsignor Paul V. Heller, to you and to the people of St. James Parish; and of their love for him and their appreciation of his labors among them. Pastor 1952-1977
