CONDOLENCES Keep Warren and Joni Lackey in

your thoughts and prayers. Warren’s

dad, Strupe Lackey, passed away on

October 6th. His funeral was last

Tuesday.

THANKS Another huge thank you to Kem Ellis

who stepped up on October 5th with

a GREAT Rotary program on the

spur of the moment when our speaker

was a no show. It was a very infor-

mative and interesting presentation !

THIS & THAT

The first Meal Pack-aging Event was a success! Pictured here are Addison Maille and Zeke Ridgeway adding their sweat equity. Kem McAllister re-ported that she worked at a table

with some South-west middle School boys and they worked “so hard and enthus iast ical ly ”. She also said that “when your table has packed 30 bags, which fills up one box, the table screams and claps. These boys were so competitive . . . Especially with the screaming!” She hopes they all become Rotarians one day as we all do! ”They definitely have the heart for it” Kem said. When Kem left around five, they had already passed the 100,000 meals level heading to 150,000!

PRACTICING SERVICE ABOVE SELF

AN EXTRA FOR THE BOYS In years past, some of the receipts from the Rotary Club’s benefit barbecue have

gone to reward the club’s top ticket sellers. Not so this year. Instead, the club simply said “thanks” to it star salesman and used the money to buy a new

bumper pool table for the Red Shield Boys club. Project Chairman Clem Paffe and Rotary President David Dowdy were on hand to cheer the first game played

by Jack Griffith, 9, and Ronnie Thomas, 10.

Last Week at Rotary . . . (continued from page 1) attendance on Thursday, Bob Brown, Bob Marsh, Mary Bogest, and Jo Woody Shaw. Then he introduced the week’s Historical Moment. It was from 1923 and centered on one of our founding members J.J. Farriss. He was a former journalist with the ‘Progressive Farmer’, the ‘Raleigh News & Observer’, and, with his brother, bought the ‘High Point Enterprise’. After his brother’s death, he sold it to the Rawleys. Farriss went on to serve as Postmaster, the Chamber’s First President, and publisher of the ‘Southern Furniture Journal’. The Rotary Club of High Point adopted a Resolu-tion honoring Farriss and presented it to him at their evening meeting at the Sheraton Hotel downtown in High Point. Following the meeting, Farriss walked over to Wesley Memorial Methodist Church which was next door at that time. Upon his return, Captain A.M. Rankin met him out on Main Street and congratulated Farriss on the recognition. He never had a chance to respond to Rankin as he suffered a massive heart attack and died right on that spot. The video at Rotary concluded with the words of Farriss, his last, from the evening’s recognition ceremony. Another great pro-duction by Kem Ellis and the members showed their appreciation with applause, both for the great presentation and for Kem’s masterful work. George White made a big push for more sign ups to fill slots needed at the BBQ, now just a week away. Jeff subbed for Wil Elder in making an announcement about the Thursday, November 16th social at the String and Splinter from 5:30-7:30. Kent Crawford gave us a report on our sister club in the Turks and Caicos. They really need ropes and tarps (20x30 is $ 30) and he gave us the chance to make donations to their cause. Ken Esposito made the long walk from hallway to podium for the Queen of Hearts drawing. The pot topped seven hundred dollars, actually $ 703, and Mark Pierce had the lucky ticket but not the lucky draw. His selection of the 5 of hearts insured we play on after the BBQ. Herman Hunter introduced Mr. Bob Brown, an honorary member of our club and our speaker for the day. High Point native Brown grew up on Commerce and attended William Penn High School. Raised by his grandmother, he credits a neighbor indirectly for much of his early knowledge. Seems she worked for a family in Emerywood and would bring home newspapers and magazines from their home. When she would throw them away, he would go dig them out of her trash and read everything he could find . . . . all the time learning. Brown graduated from Virgina Union and today holds eleven honorary degrees. He worked closely as an adviser to President Richard Nixon. He has served on some of the most powerful boards in the world. Today, he is well known in corporate America where he has advised countless international companies. He has also served with and advised many world leaders. Recently he was asked to advise on the Pope’s upcoming engagement in Ireland on the site of the old ‘killing fields’. He showed us a rosary he just received from the Pope thanking him for his involvement. Yes, he has traveled the globe extensively, but High Point is still home! That grandmother gets a lot of credit for his upbringing even to this day for her philosophies on life that guide him through life. ‘It’s not what you have, it’s about serving and giving”. Plus she would remind him that ‘God will provide’. And Brown says He has provided for him. He truly feels blessed and doors have long opened for him in his career. The Quaker Scholarship, Elks Scholarship and the Virginia Union grant are just a few of the opportunities afforded him that he took advantage of in life. Pointing to the audience he pointed out Her-man Hunter and Bill McGuinn as two that had influences in his life. What he does is not to just satisfy himself. What he does is to help others. It is these relationships that that keep him and his business in High Point. He could live anywhere in the world, but he has ‘never wanted to live any-where but High Point’. He then challenged us to raise High Point to a new level . . . . not for us, but for our children and our grandchildren. If we work together, he says, we can do anything. It will take all of us to make it happen. He thanked our country, our state, our city, and Rotary for all they have done. Likewise, he thanked Nido Qubein for his part in the efforts, but reminded us it it is not Nido’s fight, it is the fight of all of us! “The time is now and the hour is late”, he said. There is much work to be done. Sometimes, Brown said, we just don’t know how good we have it. He asked for the naysayers to Move Out of the Way! There is no place for those that want to hold us back. “We are all in this together” he reiterated. “Let’s move forward”. He praised the High Point Market and acknowledged it is the biggest thing that happens in the Southeast. But we can’t rest of our laurels he added. He wants us to ‘build’. Wrapping up praising Rotary again, Brown said that Rotary would never be what it is today, mov-ing forward, had it not been for unity and togetherness, working together, and acting and working as one. His time exhausted, Brown promised to stay around to answer questions one on one. Following the presentation of the speaker’s gift, we recited the Four Way Test and adjourned.

October 16, 2017

Jeff filled Tammy’s shoes Thursday (not her high heels though). Herman Introduced our distinguished speaker. Kent updated on the

Turks & Caicos. Don ‘behaved’ with his son present. David in his Clemson Orange (before Friday night). George on all things “Q”.
