MISSIONS FOCUS: HUMAN RELATIONS SUNDAY (Special Envelope) Human Relations Sunday was established by the 1972 General Conference of the United Methodist Church. The UM Book of Discipline describes the purpose of Human Relations Day as a call to "the Church to recognize the right of all God's children in realizing their potential as human beings in relationship with each other." Fifty-seven percent of the offering goes toward the Community Developers program, related to the General Board of Global Ministries. These persons work in racial- and ethnic-minority communities in the United States and Puerto Rico. Thirty-three per-cent of the offering supports the United Methodist Voluntary Services Program. Essential to this program are grassroots organizations that work through youth and young adult volunteers to challenge oppression and injustice. Ten percent of the offering goes to the Youth Offender Rehabilitation program. In Pennsylvania, two organizations that have received donations from Human Relations Day include Casa Del Pueblo Latino Ministries and the Grace Community’s Resource and Empower-ment Center. You can learn more about these ministries on their websites: http://lehmanumc.org/page/casa_del_pueblo, http://gcrecinc.com/about/.
