Father Vincent Trung Nguyen, Assistant Priest of the Hornsby Cathedral Parish will be celebrating Mass for Serra at Sacred Heart Church, 2 Richard Porter Way Pymble on Thursday 29th September 2016 After dinner we will be showing a video of a talk given by Father Morgan Batt, Vocations Director for

the Archdiocese of Brisbane to the Serra International Convention held in Melbourne in October 2015. His topic is “Christ the Light of the World”. Fr Batt was Parish Priest for Port Arthur when the massacre occurred in 1996. His whole first communion class was executed that day and he also lost a few parishioners. Since then, he has worked as a priest in the army/war zones and is an alpine mountaineer having climbed over 100 mountains worldwide including Mount Everest. He celebrated Mass on the top of Mount Everest, the highest Mass ever celebrated. Everyone is welcome so please join us for a very interesting evening. Please telephone: Terry Scanlan on 0438 887 295 or email [email protected] if you would like to attend.

Reflections on The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia) Each week we read an extract from Pope Francis’ letter and reflect on how it might relate to our family lives. “Dialogue is essential for experiencing, expressing and fostering love in marriage and family life. Yet it can only be the fruit of a long and demanding apprenticeship. Men and women, young people and adults, communicate differently. They speak different languages and they act in different ways. Our way of asking and responding to questions, the tone we use, our timing and any number of

other factors condition how well we communicate. We need to develop certain attitudes that express love and encourage authentic dialogue.” (Amoris Laetitia 137) Be aware this week of communication within your family, being mindful of how family members dialogue with one another. Are there patterns of communication that can be affirmed and others that may need improvement.

Dear Fellow Parishioners, 18th September 2016

The challenge presented to us in today’s readings unmasks an enduring human weakness, that of maintaining financial security at all costs - usually by honest means, but sometimes by tampering with the scales, measuring out less and charging more, and exploiting the poor by selling the sweepings of wheat instead of the good grain waiting in the barn. The disgraced steward is not much better, but he is within his rights to juggle the amounts owed to his master by cutting the exorbitant commission that he would normally have charged. When he saw he was about to be fired he let the debtors off his usual share in the

transaction and wanted it to be known they were paying what was owed to his master less his percentage which he hoped would be the means of buying their good will.

Jesus tells us we should put the same amount of energy and ingenuity into buying the goodwill of God our true Master rather than strive for the power over others which money, more often than not, gives us. In the words of St. Paul we are to “live religious and reverent lives in peace and quiet” by making use of all this world’s resources in such a way as to show faithfulness in little things so that we grow in faithfulness to God’s larger purposes. Our use of possessions should include sharing with those in need as a means of fulfilling God’s intention for this world “that everyone is to be saved”. This does not mean we can rest on our laurels and assume this will happen willy-nilly, but rather that we are to become actively involved in bringing about God’s saving actions towards everyone. It is on this ground that the demand will be made of us “Draw me up an account of your stewardship” which requires that as Christian’s the use of our goods be dictated by justice and love, not greed and abuse.

TUESDAY MORNING MEDITATION: Please note: There will be no meditation during school holidays on 27/9 and 4/10

World Day of Prayer for Peace

Pope Francis has called for a ‘Day of

Prayer for Peace’ on Tuesday 20

September 2016. The theme of the day

is ‘Thirst for peace: faiths and cultures in

dialogue’. To mark the occasion, the Holy

Father will visit Assisi, Italy. There will be a moment of

silence in memory of the victims of war, an appeal for

peace will be signed with representatives of other

religions and candles lit, followed by the exchange of a

sign of peace. You are invited to take a moment to pray

for peace on this day. Below is the peace prayer to St

Francis of Assisi.

Peace Prayer to St Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness,

light; where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to

be consoled as to console; to be understood as to

understand; to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that

we are pardoned;
