Vol. 38, No. 33 August 16, 2020 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Desk of Fr. Aldofo Novio
D uring this pandemic, many of us have been con-fronted with fear and anxiety. Most of us turned to God, who ul mately gives us consola on and reassurance in the gospel when He said, “Do not be afraid.” And so, let us take a look at our spiritual life in general, and check our country’s spiritual health based on the recent Catholic survey conducted by RealClear Opinion Research and sponsored by the Eternal Word Tele-vision Network (EWTN). This recent research shows more severe findings when compared to the previous year’s survey, par cu-larly the degree of acceptance of the Church’s teachings. According to RealClear, 18% of Catholics indicate that they accept all of the Church’s teachings and the teachings are re-flected in how they live their life. An-other 38% report they accept most teachings and try to live their life ac-cordingly; 29% do not accept some of the key teachings; 13% say that Catholicism has only a minor influ-ence on their lives; and 2% consider themselves former Catholics. The research shows surprisingly high numbers found on the ques ons of whether Catholics believe in Hell and the Devil. The results show that 81% of Catholics believe in Hell and 78% believe in the Devil with 79% of those who believe in the Devil saying that the Devil is not merely a personifica on or a symbol of evil, but is a fallen angel. Our Catechism teaches us this: “The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity.... The chief punishment of hell is eternal separa on from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was
created and for which he longs.” (CCC 1035) One of the contradictory surprises of the recent survey shows that an overwhelming majority of 72% of Catholics believe that certain acts are intrinsically evil (meaning that they are always immoral at all
mes regardless of inten on or cir-cumstances). However, a majority of Catholics s ll dissent, knowingly or unknowingly from the Church’s teachings in several important areas: less than half of all Catholics say that abor on (47%), euthanasia (45%) and physician-assisted suicide (41%) are intrinsically evil. In last year’s EWTN/RealClear poll, one of the most shocking findings was that only 49% of Catholics believe in the Real Presence of the Eucharist, even among the 56% who accept all or most of the Church teachings. “Real Presence” refers to our belief that the host becomes the Most Precious Body of Christ, and His humanity and divinity are really present in Holy Communion (this is called Transubstan a on). These results revealed that even among the most dedicated Catholics, there is s ll a gap in living the faith. This is also apparent in this
year’s poll findings on the issue of abor on. In the poll, 51% of all Catholics believe abor on should be legal; 44% saying it should be illegal. Among “ac ve” Catholics, only 56% say it should be illegal while 23% say that abor on should always be illegal, and 27% say abor on should always be legal. This is the faith situa on in our country. Where do you think you belong in the survey? May we find our way back to the Lord and His teaching and voice in the Church.

Nex Weekend’s Readings 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year A
Reading I: Isaiah 22: 19-23 The prophet denounces Shebna, a high court official, for obstruc ng his message then he chooses Eliakim to succeed Shebna. He gives Eliakim “the key” for entrance to the royal presence, a badge of authority. Reading II: Romans 11: 33-36 Paul composes a hymn of admira on and thanksgiving for God’s amazing providence. God is nobody’s debtor. Nor does He need consultants before ac ng. Paul ends the sec on with a doxology. The Gospel: Ma hew 16: 13-20 Against the backdrop of the sophis cated city built by tetrarch Philip to honor Caesar, Jesus conducts “an opinion poll” of His cho-sen disciples. Simon Peter confesses the right response to Jesus’ ques on and receives both praise and “the keys” to the kingdom of heaven and all that implies.

If you have a ques on about any aspect of our Catholic Church and faith, contact us and we will answer to the best of our ability.
242. “Do Catholics worship Mary? Why do Catholics emphasize Mary so much?” Catholics believe that worship is due to God alone. Catholics do, however, venerate Mary. In other words, we honor our Blessed Mother with great reverence and devo on because she is the Mother of God. Mary is the model of perfect love and obedience to Christ. God preserved Mary from sin, and she conceived our Lord by the power of the Holy Spirit, bringing Christ into our world. Catholics can’t help but honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is full of grace, the Mother of God and our Mother. Her “yes” to God made the Incarna on possible and, with-out the Incarna on, we would not have salva on. Mary is the most beau ful model of total submission to the will of God. Catholics do not view Mary as equal to Chris but rather venerate Mary because of her rela onship to Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, “Mary’s role in the Church is inseparable from her union with Christ and flows directly from it.” (CCC 964) As Catholics, we pray that we can respond to God’s call to holiness for our lives in the way that Mary did. Mother Teresa prayed to emulate Mary’s devo on to Christ: “Mary, Mother of Jesus, give me your heart so beau ful, so pure, so immaculate, so full of love and humility that I may be able to receive Jesus in the Bread of Life, love Him as You loved Him, and serve Him as You served Him….”
