Fire safety
As fire places get more regular use during winter it is important to remember these tips to keepyour whanau and home safe
Ashes
Keep ashes in a metal bucket for at least 5 daysPour water on the ashes before disposing themKeep ashes clear of buildings and vegetationRemember the wind can transfer embers so a lid on the bucket is a good idea
Fire risk labels
You can help keep your child safe by choosing nightwear that has a low fire danger and byteaching them to be safe around heaters and open fires
No clothes are fireproof however there are things you can look for when choosing safe nightwearfor your child All childrenrsquos nightwear is legally required to have a fire-risk label on it These labelsindicate the level of risk that the item will catch on fire
Where possible choose white label nightwear that fits snugly Baggy or loose nightwear can catchfire more easily
Around the heater or fire
Children should stay at least 1 metre awayfrom any heaters or open fires
Put safety guards around the heater or fire ifthere are going to be young children in thehouse Teach your children the lsquometre fromthe heaterrsquo rule and watch that they donrsquot sitor walk closer than a metre to the heater orfire
