Signs of Substance Use Disorder/Addiction
Addiction is a disease caused by the use of drugs or alcohol resulting in a
chemical change in the brain. Substance use becomes the priority of the
“rewired” brain and it affects every part of the user’s life. Signs of the disease
may include physical or behavioral symptoms—most likely both.
Behavioral: Changes in attitude/personality, increased aggression/irritability,
lethargy, depression, dramatic changes in habits and/or priorities, sudden
changes in social networks, criminal activity.
Physical: Bloodshot/glazed eyes, dilated or constricted pupils, abrupt weight
changes, changes in hygiene, dental issues, skin changes, problems
sleeping or sleeping too much.

Recovery Central began with a vision for recovery ministry in Novem-
ber 2017. From May 2018 to August 2019, the leadership team from
Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Washington, IN
participated in extensive Mutual Ministry training with the Indiana
Center for Congregations. Upon completion of this training, we
received a matching grant for $30,000 from the Center for
Congregations, which is funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc.
Mutual Ministry
This is a ministry with people - not for
them, or in behalf of them.
Mutual Ministry can be described by the
following acronym - C.A.R.
Collaborative: People in need become
partners - not recipients - of services.
Asset-based: The resources in ministry are not merely financial. They
include talents, energy, experience, wisdom and other wealth shared by
people who wish to help and those who seek help.
Relational: Ministry is essentially a growing trust between people
committed to improving their quality of life by removing obstacles to
growth in wellness.

There is a great deal of stigma

people struggling to recover
from substance abuse
disorders. Recovery Central is
committed to public education,
peer support efforts and
empowerment in order to
promote a better understanding
of addiction issues and the
possibility of recovery.

Resources and Awareness People who return to their communities and neighbor-hoods after a period of incarceration face many obstacles to housing, jobs, childcare and other vital connections.
We understand the reality which finds some people unsure how to navigate - despite all the information they have received. Recovery Central strives to be a place for people in transition. This requires more than a simple packet of information. This is a relationship-building ministry. Our effort invites local congregations and other volunteers to become partners with the recovery community. We believe the pathways to recovery must be more visible and accessible.

Counseling is a mainstay of substance abuse treatment, and can also treat other mental health conditions that often play a role in substance abuse. Certain psychological and social factors - stress, visiting ‘old’ neighborhoods and social networks - can all be powerful triggers that can create a strong ongoing urge to use again. Counseling helps you learn to manage what life throws at you without substance use.

The group “Just As You Are” (JAYA) began as a Celebrate Recovery
(Saturday Evening) meeting in January 2015.
The name “Just As You Are” (JAYA) was decided by the group leaders in
the summer of 2017. The Saturday meetings of JAYA still reflect the val-
ues of Celebrate Recovery and continue to use Celebrate Recovery and
related materials. By late 2018, JAYA meetings began to include a curric-
ulum for earning a 12-Step completion certificate in the interest of improv-
ing access to housing. The fellowship of JAYA gives special attention to
people in Community Corrections.
