GENERAL INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must apply. Please submit a separate LAHS Scholarship Application for each scholarship, unless otherwise specified. You may enter general information on the application once, and make copies.

In order to apply for any local scholarship, you must submit an LAHS Scholarship Application and a signed FERPA Release Form to Ms. Segler

in the College & Career Center located in the Topper Library.

Submit a clean, neat, and complete application. Use a computer for all supporting documents if at all possible. Neatness and accuracy are important. Make sure you allow yourself sufficient time to meet the postmark and delivery deadlines, which vary by scholarship. Late applications will not be accepted. Please note that applications prepared in haste often contain errors which may disqualify you from consideration. Incomplete applications will not be considered for scholarship awards.

Scholarship opportunities are available to students who are going to vocational and technical schools, as well as two-year and four-year colleges or universities. When selecting scholarships, choose only those that match your interests, ambitions, and academic strengths.

Transcripts Several scholarships ask for copies of transcripts, either official or unofficial. Please complete the Los Alamos High School Transcript Request form, found in the Registrar’s office or online, to request copies of your transcripts. There is no fee for transcripts when applying for scholarships. Please give the registrar at least three days to process. Do not wait until the last minute to request transcripts.

Essays, Personal Statements, and Letters Several scholarships ask for essays, personal statements, or letters. Use as much care writing these as you would an English assignment. Do a little research about the organization to see what they do. For example, the local Kiwanis organization’s mission is different from the Los Alamos Garden Club’s. Remember to use proper form when writing letters. Your ambition, abilities, and achievements are all factors that are considered in awarding a scholarship. When you submit an application with minimal answers, you raise questions as to your ability to communicate. Address each point completely.

Many organizations will ask how much money you have been able to save towards your college education. Never write the word “none” on your application without some type of explanation. The same holds true when the organization asks how much your parents will be able to contribute for your expenses.

Letters of Recommendation Teachers are not required to write Letters of recommendation for you. So, when asking, ask kindly and with respect for their time and energy. Always be sure to show your appreciation with a hand written note of thanks. If you will be asking teachers (or anyone else) for Letters of Recommendation, make sure to allow them plenty of advance notice. Do not expect anyone to write a Letter of Recommendation with a day’s notice. Two weeks should be the minimum advance notice you give.

If no recommendation is requested, that means you do not need one. Most of the local groups ask only for contact names and phone numbers or email addresses so that teachers will not have to write so many recommendations. If

- Review packet and note applications dates and any special qualifications.

- Complete the LAHS Local Scholarship Application and give one copy of it to Ms. Segler in the College & Career Center located in the Topper Library.

- Sign and return the FERPA Release Form to Ms. Segler.

- Request Transcripts from Registrar. Unofficial transcripts can be copied by you and sent. Official transcripts must be sent from the Registrar.

- Ask Teachers/Counselors/Employers/Community Members for Letters of Recommendation. Remember to give them plenty of time and plenty of help by filling out the Letter of Recommendation Form located on Page 59 of this packet.

- Essay: Have someone proof read it for you before you submit it to the scholarship committee. Afresh set of eyes can spot mistakes and correct them for you.

- References: Be sure and let the people you are listing as a reference know that you are listing them as a reference so that they are not caught off guard.

- Test Scores: These are on your LAHS transcript. If the scholarship requires official test scores, you will need to request these from either College Board or ACT.

the person writing the letter is to mail it directly to the scholarship committee, make sure to provide a stamped envelope with the correct address.

Assist those who will be writing for you by giving them as much information as you can, both about yourself and the scholarship requirements. You may find it helpful to use the Letter of Recommendation Checklist which is located on Page 59 of this packet.

Thank You Letters Above all, if you should receive one of these scholarships, remember to send a card or letter to the organization expressing your appreciation. It is also a nice gesture to send a note to the organization once you are at school to let them know how you are getting along.

Also remember to send a thank you note to anyone who assisted you in the application process, including those who wrote Letters of Recommendation.

Good luck to all! If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Segler at [email protected] or stop by the College & Career Center located in the Topper Library at LAHS.

Senior Recognition Ceremony If you receive a scholarship, you should plan to attend the LAHS Senior Recognition Ceremony on April 23, 2020 at 6:00pm in the Duane Smith Auditorium.

Rotary Great Expectation Award for Solid B Students Rotary Club of Los Alamos

Description This award was established to recognize the solid B-range student.

Field of Specialization No restrictions

Value of Award This is for an award at a minimum of $1,500.

Eligibility The award is open to any graduating senior at Los Alamos High School, a Los Alamos County homeschooler, or Los Alamos County resident who is a graduating senior in any other high school, who plans to enroll at a recognized post-secondary educational institution within 10 months of graduation. This award is for solid B-range students who may not be awarded additional scholarships.

Basis of Award The basis of the award is an essay, based on Rotary International’s annual theme; this year it is “Rotary Connects the World.” In this context, the topic is how individual and group acts of service can help connect others in your community, state, country and around the world. You may use specific examples of how service projects in which you participated had the impact of expanding the connections in your service group or in your individual act of service. Demonstrated service, though an added element in the essay, is not the primary criterion. We expect sincerity and specificity in addressing the topic. Vague platitudes are not what we are looking for. Personal experience is not required. Need is not a consideration.

Application Procedure 1. Complete and submit the LAHS Local Scholarship Application.2. Provide a one-page essay (300-500 words) as outlined in “Basis of Award.” This essay will be judged on content,

but grammar and spelling will be considered.3. You must submit one to three letters of recommendation. These can be from teachers, adult friends, employers,

Test scores (SAT or ACT) may be added. This award is for a student who has a grade-point average in the B range. All other applications will not be considered. Be sure to black out Social Security numbers where they may appear. Please submit the requested information with the application.
