• The first tire’s were made out of wood and leather.

• It soon evolved into solid rubber wrapped around wood.

• The problem with the solid rubber tire was that they would get soft and mushy in hot weather and get hard and inflexible in the cold.

• In 1839 Charles Good year discovered the vulcanization process.

• This process heated the rubber of the tire with sulfur; which turned the rubber into a firm pliable material.

• This method absorbed shock and resisted abrasion.

• After the vulcanization process was the pneumatic method enclosed air in a tube and surrounded the tube with rubber.

• This method was found to cut down on vibrations and provide more traction.

• This invention was made by a Scottish inventor, Robert W. Thomas.

• But sadly Robert W. Thomas was far ahead of his time.

• The second inventor of the pneumatic method was John B. Dunlop.

• Dunlop claimed to have no knowledge of Roberts earlier invention.

• In Europe 1948 the first steel radial tires appeared

• The tire has a thin steel fabric going around incasing it and making it strong

• Some of the advantages to radial tires are: they have a longer tread life because the steel keeps it from rolling as much, which also increases gas mileage

• The first car to move under its own power was moved by steam.

• This car was built by Nicolas Joseph Cugnot .

• The vehicle was used for the French military to carry around heavy artillery.

• And the car the engine was used on only moved 2.5 mph

•The steam engine heated water which expanded and the turn the turbine.

•The steam engine had to pressurize every ten to fifteen minutes.

• The first crude oil electric carriage was made by Scottish inventor Robert Anderson.

• The first successful electric car in the United States was built by William Morrison in 1891.

• The electric car was killed when Henry Ford started mass producing the gas powered automobile.

• The electric car downfall had to do with not being able to go long distances and the lack of horsepower.

• In 1862 Alphonse Bear de Rochas figured out how to compress gas as the same cylinder which the gas was being burnt.

• For some odd reason many people think that Henry Ford invented the automobile. Henry ford didn’t invent the car or the assembly line.

• However he did improve the assembly which made the automobile more affordable for everyone

• With Henry’s improvement of the assembly line he moved the build speed from twelve hours and eight minutes to one hour and thirty-three minutes; he built more than 15 million automobiles over an 18 year period.
