Here, at the Canary Isles, Christopher Columbus’ troubles began.

The rudder of the Pinta, in which Captain Martin Alonso Pinzón sailed, got loose, then broke and then came off.

It was said that two of the crew broke it on purpose because they were afraid of the journey and hoped the ships would turn back.

When Christopher Columbus got back to Spain he insisted that he had reached Asia. He thought that Hispaniola was an island off the coast of China. He didn’t realised that he had found the Americas. He wrote ……Hispaniola is a miracle. Mountains and hills, plains and pastures, are

both fertile and beautiful. The harbours are unbelievably good

and there are many wide rivers of which the many contain gold. The

Indians are so naïve. When you ask for something, they give it,

they never say no. They are unbelievable.
