    The youngest son of Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly,Ganguly was born on 8 July 1972 in Kolkata. His fatherran a flourishing print business and was one of therichest men in Kolkata. He had a luxurious childhood and

    was nicknamed the Maharaja. Though he was asked toconcentrate on his studies and not play cricket, he wasinspired to do so by his brother Snehasish Ganguly, anaccomplished left-handed batsman for Bengal. Thoughhe was actually right-handed, he batted left-handed so

    that he could use his brother's equipment. After heshowed some promise as a batsman, he was enrolled in acricket academy. An indoor multi-gym and concretewicket was built at home for him and his brother, and hewould often watch cricket videos, especially those

    of David Gower, his hero.

    June, 1996: Makes his First Come Back and Scorescentury against England at Lord's on Test debut and

    follows it up with another century in the very next Testat Trent Bridge.

    August, 1997: Scores his first ODI century inColombo against Sri Lanka in his 32nd match.

    September, 1997: Leading scorer and wicket-taker inthe Sahara Cup as India thrash Pakistan 4-1. He scored222 runs at 55.5 and 15 wickets at 10.66. Wins fourMan-of-the-Match awards in five matches and Man ofthe Series .

    May, 1999: Scores 183 in Taunton against Sri Lanka in the World Cup, then

    Ganguly is the seventh Indian cricketer to have played100 Test matches.

    He is currently the 5th highest overall run scorer forIndia in Tests.

    He is the fourth Indian to have played in more than

    300 One Day Internationals. In terms of overall runs scored in ODIs, Ganguly is thefourth in the world.

    Ganguly has scored 15 centuries in Test matches and22 in ODIs.

    He is one of only seven batsmen to score more than

    Sourav, along with Sachin Tendulkar, formed by far the mostsuccessful opening pair in One Day Cricket, having amassedthe highest number of century partnerships (26) for the firstwicket. Together, they have scored more than 7000 runs atan average of 48.98, now with Sachin he is a world record

    holder for creating most no. of 50 run partnership in the firstwicket(44 fifties).

    Ganguly is the fourth player to cross 11,000 ODI runs andthird player to cross 10,000 ODI runs and so far thefastest in ODI history, after SachinTendulkar. He alsoreached 6000, 7000, 8000 and 9000 ODI runs milestones inthe fewest number of matches. Sourav can bowl medium-pacers as well he is the only Indian captain to win a Testseries in Pakistan .
