A Reason for GratitudeWhile it is

alwaysa good time tofocus on the blessings ofour lives, this seems to bethe time of year when weare more intentionalabout being thankful. Many people will posttheir reasons for gratitudeon social media each dayin November. I think thatis a great discipline,

though admittedly I willnot practice it. Beingintentionally gratefultends to increase our joyin life. As I look at theSundays of November andour focus for worship, itbrings to my mind a fewthings for which I givethanks.

C.A.S.A.Did you know that in 2014 there were 191 children from Van ZandtCounty in the foster care system due to abuse and neglect? These

children are often overlooked and can get lost in that system. Court

Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) provides committed

volunteers who will take the time to know them and advocate for

their needs. In just a few hours a month you can make a dierence

in the life of a child. There will be a New CASA Volunteer Training in

    Canton, Texas on December 1, 3, 8, and 10, 2015 from 9:00 am to 1:00

pm. If you have a heart for children and want to know more, contact

Kathy Clark at 903-597-7725 or [email protected].

the presence of Christ. Remembering their lives may bring sadness, andfor good reason. Not only have they been deeply loved by those closest to them, they have also

been deeply appreciated for the ways in which they have pointed us toward Christ. I am thankfulfor the many saints of God who have helped to keep me on the path of faith. Perhaps you will takesome time to remember those who have done the same for you.

November 8 is United Methodist Women Sunday, and the women will be leading theworship services. Betty McCormick will be bringing the message that day, and she always providesgood spiritual meat for our nourishment. I am very thankful for the women of the church, who formany generations have provided faithful leadership and service for the Kingdom. It will be a greatblessing to have them lead our worship.

Veterans Day comes this month, and we will celebrate it in worship on November 15.We will honor veterans during the worship services and give thanks for those who serve on behalfof our country. (If you don't know the history of Veterans Day, take a few minutes to look it up. It'seasy with a computer!) Coming from a family of veterans, I am very grateful for the service they

and many others have given. Perhaps you will have a chance to join a Veterans Day celebration onNovember 11 this year.

The fourth Sunday of November is "Christ the King Sunday" on the liturgical calendar. It is the last Sunday in the Christian year, as the following Sunday begins a new year with the rstSunday of Advent. The Christian year ends with the celebration of our risen Lord seated in powerand glory, anticipating the day when He shall return. In a world that often seems to be out ofcontrol, I am grateful to be reminded that God is on the throne of heaven, and with sovereignauthority governs all of creation. No matter how things seem, the people of Christ are to livevictoriously in this life, for we know that our Savior has been given dominion over all things (Eph.1:20-22).

Thanksgiving Day will be here in less than four weeks. On that day you may have

someone ask you to name something for which you give thanks. If we are honest, most of uswould have to admit that we have been blessed beyond measure by our loving Heavenly Father. For what do you give thanks? Name those blessings, and express your gratitude while you havethe opportunity.

    Pastor Dave
