SFR 2017 ~ Categories & Service Projects

Upcycled Take one or more existing garments and turn them

into a new, different, and wearable garment. Add an

accessory handmade made by the participant. Addi-

tional fabrics, trim and supplies may be used. The

upcycled garment must be sewn by the member as

part of the 4-H Clothing & Textiles project. Addition-

al upcycled and/or sewn garments are encouraged to

complete the outfit. A “before” photograph showing

the original garment(s) is required. This is not an al-

teration such as a large dress taken in to fit a smaller

person that still retains the same lines. It is where

the garment has been cut apart and remade into a

new garment that looks different. The emphasis is

on the transition of the garment.

SFR Service Projects SFR is coordinating two service projects for 2017 -

Cancer Heart Pillows and quilt squares for Quilts of

Honor. They can be sewn at home, at project

meetings and at county events. Get together with

your friends and learn more about the American

Cancer Society, cancer hospitals, and Quilts of Hon-

or. See the flyers on the SFR website for patterns,

directions, how to donate, and who to contact with

questions. The Cancer Heart Pillows can be distribut-

ed to cancer organizations and hospitals in local

communities or brought to SFR. The quilt squares

and quilt tops are brought to SFR where they will be

sorted by pattern then given to the Quilts of Honor

volunteers to finish the quilts. They are presented to

veterans during honor ceremonies. Your thoughtful

donations will touch the lives of many!

Stripe/Print/Plaid Challenge Choose any 2 of the 3 fabric designs (stripe, print,

and plaid) and incorporate them into one or more

sewn garments. If one garment is sewn, it must

include 2 of the 3 choices. If multiple garments

are sewn, the 2 choices can be in one garment,

more than one garment, or one garment each.

The addition of other fabric is allowed (ex: solids,

other prints/stripes/plaids, etc.). Polka dots are a

print. Consider construction techniques for stripes

and plaids, the placement of prints, harmonious

combination of fabrics and current style trends.

Include handmade or purchased garments and

items to complete the outfit. The entry must be

created by the member as part of the 4-H Cloth-

ing & Textiles project. (New for 2017)

Knit Challenge Construct a wearable garment out of knit fabric.

Any fabric content is allowed (cotton, polyester,

wool, rayon, blend, etc.) and any type of knit

(single knit, double knit, rib knit). This is not a

hand-knit garment; it is a garment that is sewn,

serged, or otherwise constructed using a knit fab-

ric. Some woven fabrics contain spandex threads

which make them stretchy so they are more com-

fortable but they are still woven fabrics. This Chal-

lenge is for a knit fabric, not woven. See the pic-

tures on the SFR website to help identify a knit

fabric. Include handmade or purchased garments

and items to complete the outfit. Open to all 4-H

members with no project requirement. (New for

2017)

Traditional This category features garments the participant has

constructed, showcasing sewing skills and the abil-

ity to coordinate an outfit. The entry must be sewn

by the member as part of the 4-H Clothing and Tex-

tiles project, and worn by the member (not con-

structed for someone else). The outfit must contain

at least one constructed garment; participants are

encouraged to construct additional garments to

complete the outfit.

Consumer Science Purchased $40 limit The $40.00 limit is for the entire outfit, including

shoes but not sales tax. Receipts from the current

4-H year are required for any item that is visible.

Gifts, prior purchases, and items without receipts

are not eligible. Receipts from yard sales, etc. may

be hand written. There is no 4-H project require-

ment, which means any 4-H member may enter

this category.

For all Entries All outfits must meet the 4-H Dress Guidelines,

http://4h.ucanr.edu/files/210170.pdf. For State

Fashion Revue, all shorts, skirts, dresses, etc. must

be at least fingertip length due to the fashion show

raised stage. All outfits entered in SFR must be

suitable for comfortably walking, sitting, and going

up and down stairs because of the SFR schedule

and location. County Fashion Revue coordinators

will review all outfits based on these guidelines

before SFR entry, with further review by the

SFR Committee if needed.

SKILLS DAY WELL ATTENDED BY BEEF

MEMBERS

We had a great turnout for the beef project portion of Livestock Skills day.

We had a washing and blowing demonstration. Members were able to

actually learn “hands on” how to properly blow out their animal’s hair. A

demonstration was also given by Dr. Candy Rapp, DVM on how to properly

give a shot in the neck. Every attendee gave a presentation on a particular

subject that 3 different groups worked on, they were; by-products, cuts of

meat and cattle breeding facts. Hands on showmanship practice was also

available. Thank you everyone who attended and participated!

Thank you to the presenters, Jarrett & Payton Darrah.

Special Thanks to Austin Sweeney, for bringing his steer

to be used for the demonstrations

Spring 2017 Paper Clover Fundraiser Wednesday, April 26th through Sunday, May 7th

4-H and Tractor Supply Company are partneringtogether to help raise money for El Dorado 4-H programs with an in-

store fundraiser program called Paper Clover.

There are two ways to fundraise:

First, the Paper Clover promotion is a consumer-driven fundraiser where customers, that shop at Tractor Supply Co., can purchase a

Paper Clover for $1 or more when they checkout at the register. This money stays here in El Dorado Co. and supports 4-H Camp and Youth Leadership Conferences. To help sell paper clovers youth members

may dress up in their whites, which are very impressive to the public, and help sell clovers at the store.

Second, a fundraiser for your club or project. We encourage clubs & projects to participate with setting up a booth during this week-long

event to help increase fundraising dollars by holding an informational booth, bake sale, and/or petting zoo. The money made stays with

your club/project. See fundraising form http://4h.ucanr.edu/files/19878.pdf once filled out send to [email protected] or bring to the 4-H office 530-621-5503.

Plan a visit to our local Tractor Supply Company located at: 1360 Broadway in Placerville.
