CONTENTS

Welcome to the Spring edition of Color and Glass World, our newsletter designed to keep you informed about the latest developments in the world of Ferro Performance Colors and Glass.

Ferro Corporation was founded in 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, and our first international operations were set up in the late 1920s in Canada and England. Since then we have grown to become a global business leader, with operations in 26 countries on all 4 continents.

Our global reach is a big advantage because today, as much as ever in our history, we recognise that our customers require us to provide outstanding local commercial service and technical support to help with their own business development efforts. The recent upgrading of our HTP organic inks production facility in Frankfurt is a good example of this, as it will help us to deliver a faster color matching service, and shorter delivery times to the container and tableware markets in Germany and the rest of Europe.

Of course, it is important that we co-ordinate many of our activities, such as R&D, quality standards and pricing, on a worldwide basis, but we are always striving to improve our ‘on the spot’ local service to all of our customers. We want to think globally and act locally. We need to respond quickly to the rapid changes that are taking place within the industries that we serve. Throughout our operations, we encourage a culture of customer focus and innovative thinking that is designed to deliver true value for our customers.

2015 was a challenging but generally successful year for Ferro, as we continue to position ourselves to become a global, premier functional coatings and color solutions company.

Since the earliest days of our operations, colors have been central to our DNA. For almost 70 years, we have been manufacturing complex inorganic color pigments (CICPs) for use in ceramics, glass, porcelain enamel, paint and plastics. These pigments are incorporated into many of the products that we supply across a diverse range of markets such as automotive, construction, household appliances and furnishings, packaging and industrial goods. Ferro colors are present in many of the products you use every day and are associated across the world with many household names, such as Whirlpool, Ford, Toyota, Coca-Cola, IKEA, Gallo, Absolut and Wedgwood.

We announced in January the acquisition of Ferer, our longtime partner and distributor of Ferro colors to the glass, ceramic, paint and plastics markets in Turkey, and some neighboring countries. With offices and warehouses in Istanbul and Kutayha, and a color pasting facility in Kutahya, Ferer is well placed to support our growth in this important region, and I am delighted to welcome them officially to the Ferro family.

Our acquisition of Nubiola Pigments, based in Barcelona, Spain, was completed in July last year and further enhances our leadership position for inorganic pigments. With Nubiola also part of the Ferro family, we are now the world’s largest manufacturer of ultramarine blues, as well as a strong partner for iron oxide reds, chrome oxide greens, chrome yellows, molybdate oranges, zinc ferrite yellows, and bismuth vanadate yellows.

Like Ferro, Nubiola has a rich and long history of supplying colors all over the world. You will find more information about our Nubiola acquisition inside this issue.

Also in this edition, we are featuring our unleaded Starlight100 Metallic colors and CerDeChrom colors for the decoration of ceramic dinnerware. Both of these industry-leading product lines, which were highlighted at the Ceramitec Show in Munich, Germany last October, have lead contents of less than 100ppm.

And for the glass market, our new fluorescent forehearth colors are continuing to help glass packaging stand out on the shelf.

I hope that you will enjoy exploring the world of Ferro as we try to make the world a more colorful place!

Thank you for continuing to put your trust in us.

BRING YOUR GLASS PACKAGING TO LIGHT

REACH UPDATEFluorescence is a light emission, resulting from an absorption of UV light, X-rays, cathodic rays or even lasers. This emitted light is called luminescence and is visible only under exposure. This means that objects treated correctly with fluorescent materials, which will be clear under natural light, can appear colored when exposed to light radiation of a certain wavelength.

Fluorescence is a well-known effect usually used for paints, polymers such as polishes, or very technical items such as lasers or banknotes.

It is not so easy to produce fluorescence in glasses. Glass is most typically colored in large glass tanks, which are

mass production processes, not easily adaptable to manufacturing of such specialized glasses.

However, Ferro’s unique forehearth color technology now makes it possible to produce commercial quantities of fluorescent glasses, and we have recently released several new fluorescent colors, developed and manufactured at our St. Dizier location in France. These products are available either in frit form, or as concentrate pearls, depending on customer preference.

Examples of fluorescence under UVA light (wavelength = 360nm) are illustrated in the picture opposite. The samples are clear under natural light.

Interesting effects can also be seen when exciting ‘fluoresced’ glasses with a laser beam (wavelength = 405nm), where in such cases the glasses can be irradiated from distance with an invisible ray.

Our new products are introduced into the forehearth using our standard coloring systems at feed rates typically upto 3%, and can be used to create fluorescent effects in soda-lime, borosilicate or opal glasses. Both clear (flint) glass and glasses colored with the usual metallic oxides can be ‘energised’ by these new Ferro materials. The products comply with REACH and food migration standards.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) is a regulation of the European Union dated 18 December 2006. It is the strictest law to date regulating chemical substances and affects industries throughout the world.

REACH covers all substances manufactured or imported to the EU above one metric ton per year. The objectives of REACH are to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment, to maintain the free circulation of substances in the EU market, and to enhance competitiveness and innovation. Through this regulation, the responsibility to demonstrate the safe use of chemicals has been shifted from governmental authorities to Industry.

Since many Ferro products fall under REACH, we have been working on REACH preparation and registration for several years now, with a dedicated global REACH team assembling and managing the data for the required filings.

Many substances in our products were pre-registered by December 2008 as the preliminary step for the registration at the scheduled deadlines. Subsequently, ‘phase-in substances’ (i.e. those substances already on the market) with volumes handled of 1000 tonnes and over per year plus CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction) and toxic (R50/53) substances with volumes >1 tonne per year, were registered by the December 2010 deadline. Phase-in substances with volumes >100 tonnes per year were registered by December 2013.

The next deadline is May 2018 when all products with volumes of over 1 tonne/year have to be registered.

Ferro cannot foresee the impact of REACH legislation and regulations on all of our products. However, we have made a clear commitment to health, safety and the environment, and act accordingly towards all of our customers worldwide.

Consequently, we were the first and for quite some time the only Company that informed their customers about repro- and eco-toxicity problems with special frits. These boron and zinc containing frits have a SiO2 content below 30%. This has a significant impact for the handling and storage of many of our products e.g. for container and automotive glass.

Should Ferro decide to discontinue a product, customers will be informed in due time, and where available, substitutes identified and marketed as a recommended replacement for the discontinued item.

Glass packaging on the shelf really shines thanks to Ferro forehearth color technology

Our fluorescent colors are outstanding for applications such as beverage and cosmetics glass bottles and tableware applications. As we all now, nightclubs often use strong UV lamps to provide the required atmosphere and ambience, and such lighting would give fluorescencing glass bottles extra stand-out quality at the drinks bar, in the hand or at the table. Small UV-lamp bulbs are increasingly common, and could be used at the table in restaurants to provide a different kind of ‘mood’ lighting, and fluorescent effects for the accompanying bottles and drinking glasses. Luxurious glass packaged products, such as cosmetics or expensive liquors could be displayed in cabinets ‘excited’ with fluorescent light.

In 2015, following 2 years of research collaboration, Verallia, through their production site VOA Verrerie d’Albi in France, commercialized a bottle using Ferro forehearth feeder frit that is clear under daylight and fluoresces bright blue under black light. The intensity of the blue coloration varies depending on the base color of the liquid in the bottle.

Ferro pioneered the use of forehearth color technology almost 40 years ago. This is now a recognized process worldwide for the efficient production of colored glass in short to medium run campaigns, and for the production of special glasses and colors that are difficult or impossible to produce in the glass tank. Our fluorescent forehearth colors are the latest example of how our technology can bring your glass packaging not only to life... but also to light.

FERRO-NUBIOLA UNION CREATES COLOR SOLUTIONS POWERHOUSE

Ferro significantly expanded its global pigments business in July 2015 through the acquisition of privately held Nubiola. Based in Barcelona, Spain, Nubiola is a worldwide producer of specialty inorganic pigments and the world’s largest producer of Ultramarine Blue, a high-value pigment for the plastics and construction industries, due to its durability, unique color attributes and its whitening capability. Other products include specialty Iron Oxides, Chrome Oxide Greens, Molybdate Oranges, Chrome Yellows, Bismuth Vanadate Yellows, and Corrosion Inhibitors.

The 101-year-old family-owned company has production facilities in Spain, Colombia, Romania and India, and a joint venture in China. Nubiola sells into more than 85 countries. The majority of Nubiola’s customers serve the plastics, coatings and construction industries.

The Nubiola business is now integrated into Ferro, with commercial teams across the world working jointly in

selling a combined, robust portfolio of inorganic pigments and Complex Inorganic Color Pigments (CICP).

Peter Thomas, Chairman, President and CEO of Ferro Corporation, said, “Nubiola is an excellent strategic fit with Ferro, as we strengthen our position as a global color solutions provider. The acquisition has significantly expanded our product portfolio and geographic footprint.”

He continued, “Our strengths and values are complementary. Nubiola’s largest end market is the plastics industry, while Ferro’s Complex Inorganic Color Pigments (CICP) business focuses predominantly on the coatings market. Our teams are working together, maintaining our business model of regional production and high-touch local technical service. We are also investing in a combined R&D program focused on development of innovative products and color solutions for our customers.”

CerDeChrom COLORS FOR CERAMIC PRINTING

The 7-color CerDeChrom process was developed by Ferro in co-operation with the UK software development company, TypeMaker. Introduction of this system means that it is no longer necessary to make compromises to obtain top color reproduction results in ceramic printing. The additional colors and hand corrections, required when using the four-color process for printing ceramics, have become a thing of the past!

The CerDeChrom System gives accurate reproduction with brilliant color definition through an automated separation process. Compared to organic colors and printing on paper, it is infinitely more complex and difficult to produce a wide gamut of color possibilities with ceramic pigments. However, Ferro has been able to develop and optimise the ceramic colors to ensure that the 7-Color Process works effectively for printing ceramic substrates. The CerDeChrom system takes into account the peculiarities of ceramic colors, and consequently the printed results are much truer to the originals than through any manual labour-intensive process.

Now, Ferro is expanding the range of application conditions for CerDeChrom. A complete new development, which was introduced at the 2015 Ceramitec show in Munich, is the 7-color process for unleaded inglaze colors based on the SKY100 range. SKY100 is Ferro’s new generation of high temperature, fast-fire, intensive colors for inglaze decoration of porcelain. With a lead content of max 100ppm, this range complies with EN 1388 1-2, Californian prop. 65 and the FDA, and sets new standards in the area of lead-free decoration of porcelain.

7-Color Process with SKY100 Unleaded Inglaze Colors

• Automatic 7-Color separation software that eliminates the time required for preparing custom separations.

• Confidence that the maximum color gamut possible is achieved from the separations and final fired print.

• Limiting the color palette to a fixed set of seven colors reduces waste and preparation time required when switching between a larger range of colors.

• A fixed set of seven colors enables economic mixing of different jobs on the same layout.

• Accurate display on the computer monitor of fired results from the seven separations enables proofing and job approval before the job is printed and fired.

• All seven colors merge into each other, ensuring no one color overpowers any other.

• Optimised ink weights reduce pigment usage and avoid potential problems of color build-up.

• Best results from the original image can be delivered in a single pass, avoiding costly corrections and reprints.

FERER JOINS THE FERRO FAMILY

Beautiful, precious metal colors have been appreciated and used successfully for the decoration of pottery and ceramics for centuries. In the beginning those color shades were developed using exclusively precious metal preparations, which are extremely expensive. However, in the 1980s, with the support of color suppliers like Ferro, the ceramic industry started to use so-called metallic colors.

These colors are based on metallic pigments and create an appearance close to one or other of the precious metals, such as a burnished or mattgold, silver, platinum, or white gold. The metallic colors are less costly due to the elimination of precious metals. In addition, burnished gold decoration effects can be achieved without the costly, labor-intensive post-fire polishing that is necessary to create burnished golds using pure precious metals.

Dinnerware designers like to create effects with high gloss bright gold in combination with metallic colors in the color shades of silver and gold. The more matt metallic colors produce an impressive contrast to the high gloss bright platinum or bright gold.

In 21st century designs, metallic colors are applied all over the ceramic world - from dinnerware to tiles and art ceramics.

For use on ceramic substrates, it is essential to develop metallic colors that incorporate specialised metallic pigments with high firing stability, combined with finely ground, uniquely formulated glasses (flux). The glass component coats the metallic pigments and guarantees sufficient adhesion to the ceramic glaze during firing. The chemistry of the glass is responsible for many properties of the color, such as the melting behavior and the dishwasher resistance, whereas the metallic pigment is responsible for the color tone and the special effect.

Until recently, the application of metallic colors has been limited to onglaze decoration, which have firing temperatures of max. 900°C, and this has severely limited the range of application for this type of decoration. The challenge has been to develop a new generation of metallic colors that can be processed with high temperature fast firing cycles at 1140°C – 1180°C.

Ferro’s new line of unleaded metallic colors, branded as the Starlight100 series, fulfills these requirements. Launched last October at Ceramitec 2015 in Munich, Germany, the Starlight100 series, which contain max.100ppm of lead, is the first range in the world for high temperature fast fire processes.

Ferer was founded in Istanbul, Turkey in 1998 by the Dulgeroglu family, and from its earliest days became a prominent agent and distributor of Ferro’s glass colors, pigments and ceramic colors. The company grew rapidly, and added a number of machinery and equipment brands to its agent portfolio, as it built a powerful and respected reputation as a full-service provider for the glass and ceramics industries in Turkey and surrounding countries.

In the early part of the new millenium, Ferer acquired the color business and assets of dmc2 Turkey, along with its Kutahya site, an important regional sales base to serve the Turkish glass and ceramics sector. Since then, the Kutahya site has been developed and a new blending and pasting plant, with an expanded technical service laboratory, was recently opened to produce and distribute customized paste and powder products, made using Ferro intermediates.

Today, Ferer’s primary focus is on servicing manufacturers of automotive and flat glass, glass packaging and tableware, as well as the non-tile ceramics, paint and plastics markets.

The acquisition of Ferer, which was completed in January 2016, further strengthens Ferro’s position in the fast growing Turkish region, and provides a ‘local’ operational presence focused on the glass market.

Commenting on the acquisition, Dieter Binder said: “Ferer is a great fit with Ferro, and advances our strategy to invest in high growth opportunities. We know each other very well over many years of trading, and Ferer is a highly valued partner. Our companies have shared business values and aligned technical service models, and the Ferer team has built an expert knowledge of Ferro products.”

Ferer’s Managing Director, Tolga Dulgeroglu added: “I’m delighted to become a part of the Ferro family. My team and I are looking forward to working even more closely with our Ferro colleagues in future, to accelerate growth in the region. With Ferro’s technology and expertise on board, we believe our team is well positioned to provide the required technical and customer service demanded by the market in Turkey. We expect to make a seamless transition to the Ferro brand over the coming weeks, and all our customers will continue to work with their usual sales, technology and customer service contacts.”

Dieter Binder Vice President, Performance Colors and Glass

Started in 1892 in Shandong province, Chateau Changyu (Changyu Pioneer Wine Co. to give it its full name) is the oldest and largest wine producer in China; previous attempts to start wine production, as far back as 2000 years ago, failed. Today, the Changyu brand is recognised as one of China’s Famous Trademarks and was included as the only Asian brand in Drinks International’s 2013 list of the World’s Most Admired Brands.

Changyu wine bottles are made by its affiliate, Yantai Changyu Glass, which started production in the late 1990s and has grown to become China’s largest wine glass bottle producer, using

the latest European process technology, including automatic decorating lines.

Changyu is the first to use glass enamels to decorate wine bottles, in place of traditional paper or plastic labels, with Ferro lead-free thermoplastic enamels as the environmental-friendly choice for its automatic printing line.

Shaanxi Xifeng Liquor Co. is one of the four most famous liquor brands in China with 1500 years of history. They are also the first Chinese liquor company to select Ferro thermoplastic lead-free enamels for decoration by direct application on glass, in place of decals. The glass bottles are

manufactured by Chongqing Hoson Glass, which was set up in 2001 to design and produce high-end liquor bottles.

The colors for both these famous Chinese brands are manufactured in Ferro Zibo’s new glass color pasting facility. The pasting plant, commissioned in 2013, operates with the latest technology and process equipment and provides expert local color matching and servicing for the Chinese and Asian container glass market.
