This Is What Repentance Looks Like(Jonah 1:17 – 2:9)
In repentance, we must recognize our sin,
understand that it leads to death, then ask forgiveness
and submit ourselves back to God.
Matthew 12:38-40
38Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” 39He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Verse 3
“into the deep”“floods surrounded me”“the heart of the seas”“waves & billows passed over me”
Verse 5“waters closed in over me”“deep surrounded me.”
Like he’s drowning and consumed in sin.
Verse 4
“driven away from your sight.”“yet I shall again look upon your holy temple."
Jonah recognized his sin and understood that it led to death
Verse 6
“distress”“Sheol”
Repentance is not just admitting sin or feeling the guilt that comes with it.
•Jonah was only admitting sin, not submitting himself to God (Jonah 1:9,12) •Pharaoh confessed sin, but did not repent (Ex. 9:27, 34-35)•Felix felt guilty about his sin, but did not submit to God (Acts 24:24-25
2 Chronicles 7:14
if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
