With Summer finally upon us activities around the Bannatyne campus signal

the beginning of summer programs and the end of another academic year.

Summer Weekend Inner-City Supervised Hoops (SWISH)

The Summer Weekend Inner-City Supervised Hoops (SWISH) program is set to begin its second year from Saturday, 29 June 2013 through 10 August 2013. SWISH will take place in Parking Lot E, providing an opportunity for Inner City Winnipeg youth to play basketball under the supervision of paid staff and volunteers. SWISH is a partnership between Faculties of Medicine,

Community Engagement

Pharmacy, Dentistry, Kinesiology and Recreation Management, City of Winnipeg, Basketball Manitoba, Youth Agencies Alliance, and several community non-profit agencies.

Xavier Smith was recently hired as the new SWISH coordinator bringing several years experience from his work within the community and as Bison Men’s Basketball team member. Welcome Xavier!

This year, Bannatyne’s Sneakers in Motion event raised funds to support the SWISH program with half of all proceeds raised donated to the program. Thank

Mini-U Bannatyne

Bison Children’s Programs and Community Engagement staff have spent the last several weeks recruiting inner Winnipeg youth for another three weeks of Mini-U at Bannatyne. The camps will take place from 29 July 29 to 16 August for approximately 45 youth from Wtellington and Hugh John Macdonald schools. Mini-U will provide a

walking school bus for all participants so they can arrive and depart from their regular schools throughout the program. This is a great opportunity for youth to enjoy the camp experience right in their community.

Also new this year, Indigenous Mini-U will provide two weeks of Indigenous-based content and fun for up to forty campers from inner Winnipeg. Indigenous Achievement, Bison Programs, Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management and Community Health Sciences have worked together to bring a strong cultural mix of programs for participants from 15 - 26 July. Indigenous Mini-U will take place at the Fort Garry Campus. Participants for both Bannatyne and Fort Garry camps receive transportation, lunches, and Mini-U t-shirt.

Bannatyne Campus Master Plan - Communty Meetings

Community Health Sciences supported Campus Planning staff with their community consultations for the proposed Bannatyne Master Plan. Consultations were held with Centre for Aboriginal Students in Health Education (CAHE) in April; Dufferin School and Centennial Neighbourhood residents in May; and Rossbrook House community in June. In total, approximately 70 community members provided their input into the proposed restructuring of the Bannatyne Campus.

Community Events

On the 24th of April CHS and External Relations worked together to coordinate a unique experience and tour of the North End Women’s Centre for two University of Nairobi Masters Students (Centre for Global Public Health) visiting the UM on an exchange. The students and NEWC clients sat down to share stories of issues and challenges faced by women globally and to acknowledge their similarities, despite

obvious geographical distance. The visit provided the Kenyan students with an opportunity to hear first hand about the various supports and services available for Manitoba women. A portion of the visit and feedback from students is available at:

http://youtube/KW-7UHcf5iU

Community Health Sciences provided support to the Dufferin Parent Centre year-end celebration and feast on June 6th. Approximately 400 community residents, Dufferin staff/students came out on a beautiful June evening to celebrate the end of another successful academic year.

CHS also funded festivities to support the North End Community Helpers Network National Aboriginal Day celebration on the 21st of June. The event is widely attended by almost 2000 north end residents annually, gathering between Selkirk/Flora and Powers/Andrews streets to listen to entertainment and enjoy traditional Aboriginal food.

A pair of Masters Students (Global Health) from the University of Nairobi spent a lunch hour at the North End Women's Centre

Biomedical Youth ProgramIts been a flurry of exciting activity

at the Biomedical Youth Program (BYP) and Inner City Science Centre (ICSC) over the past couple of months.

In partnership with the Winnipeg School Division the BYP was pleased to help host the Winnipeg Schools’ Science Fair on 17 April 2013. More than 200 students from Gr. 4-12 from various schools in Winnipeg School Division exhibited their original science fair projects in Brodie Centre. The excited young scientists shared the results of their work with over 100 volunteer judges from various faculties at the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba, in addition to research experts, some from our very own Faculty of Medicine. The participants also enjoyed interactive hands-on activities demonstrating the spread of infection through populations and forensics, amongst other interesting topics in the field.

Mentorship students from the ICSC also shone at exhibitions of student research! During the months of April and May our mentees took part in various local science fairs, including fairs within their own schools, the Winnipeg Schools’ Science Fair, the Manitoba Schools’ Science Symposium, and the Youth Encouraging Sustainability (YES) Showcase. We are very proud of how much our mentorship students have grown over the past academic year! The mentorship students earned accolades from their judges and the public, and garnered a total of 5 bronze, 11 silver, 8 gold medals, and 2 special awards of distinction over the course of the science fair season! We feel more than privileged to assist such exceptional talent at the ICSC!

The ICSC’s teachers undergoing professional development also enjoyed learning lab techniques covering a variety of scientific disciplines. Over the last two months, over 30 educators learned environmental evaluation techniques testing water quality, basic physiological tests for cardiovascular functions, determining the nutrient content of foods, and the science behind flight and motion! The educators look forward to applying these techniques in the classroom enhancing science for their students.

The BYP will be hosting its annual summer camp from the 22nd to 26th of July 2013 on the University of Manitoba Bannatyne Campus. We are excited to host more than 225 participants, including 30 students from Northern Manitoba for a week of hands-on activities from various disciplines in basic science and biomedicine. Make sure to look out for our young scientists around the Campus in July as we work towards making their week a memorable part of their summer.

J.A. Hildes Northern Medical Unit Supports Rural Week

Rural Week is a one week learning experience for all first year

medical students. It provides an opportunity for the students to get first-hand experience and exposure to not just rural and northern medicine but rural and northern life. It is also an opportunity for participating communities to showcase themselves and promote the opportunities and benefits of rural and northern medicine.

It takes the efforts of numerous preceptors, health care professionals, and countless community volunteers to provide students with rural medicine and community experiences. Dr. Anne Durcan (NMU, Director Inuit Heath) in her other role as Education Co-ordinator, Undergraduate Rural Medical Education successfully co-ordinates the week in conjuction with the Office of Rural and Northern Health. And helping to contribute to that success is the NMU's Kathy Risk and Kathy Harlos who co-ordinate the student's travel to some of the northern and Inuit communities participating in the Week.

Students Laura Tapley, Zoe Glover, Kaitlin Adey, Angella Griffith

Announcements

With great reluctance we said goodbye to Office Assistant, Jean Parry who retired

on the 14th of June. Although happy for this next chapter in her life and her returning "back home"; we are just a little bit sad at the prospect of her absence from our daily work lives.

Many adjectives describe Jean: kind, loving, caring gentle, knowledgeable, dedicated, considerate, motherly, supportive, inspiring, mentor. But those words do not really capture the essence of what it has been like to have Jean as a co-worker these past 14 years. It has been grand Jean. Enjoy your retirement.

Happy retirement to Margaret Warriner and Luba Scott, Nurse Sonographers. Both Nurses travelled for many years with Dr. Gerry McCarthy.

Jean and RogerAnd more Happy retirement wishes go to Endoscopy Nurse, Margaret Percival who traveled for many years to Rankin Inlet with Dr. Assuras.

A new internist for Norway House, Dr. Stephen Henry began with us in April 2013. Welcome Dr. Henry.
