THIS IS SMOOTH JAZZ 4: PASSION continues the never-ending search for the latest groundbreakers and chartmakers in the scene. The focus of "Passion" is to deliver the finest moments from England's two leading smooth jazz labels Passion Music (the home of smooth jazz sensations, Shakatak) and Expansion Records. This exciting album features highlights from the rosters of both labels, including new material from Shakatak and the latest single from the Jazz Steppers. Other moving performances include top 10 radio chart stars Nite Flyte, Beatifik (featuring Shakatak founding member

Roger Odell) and Act of Faith (featuring Gota and Simply Red guitarist, Mark Jaimes). Also included is Nicolas Bearde, who has worked with Bobby McFerrin, Michael Bolton, and Kenny Loggins as well as Nigel Martinez (who has worked with Al Jarreau, and The Emotions, and as in-house producer for Motown Records), and Jill Saward, stepping out for a solo record after 20 years as Shakatak's lead vocalist.

percussion are just a few of the talents of Jill

Saward, long serving lead vocalist with jazz

fusion group Shakatak. After nearly twenty

years with the Shaks, it is in many ways

surprising that it took until 1999 for her to

record her first solo album JUST FOR YOU. On

that album, she teams up with some

outstanding UK musicians such as Jason Rebello

and Snake Davies alongside long standing co¬

writing partner and bass man George Anderson.

Fridrik has been a professional musician since his

teens, and had his first international success with

the group Mezzoforte in 1983 with a Top 10 hit

"Garden Party". After touring the world with other

leading musicians, he decided to move to England

in 1996 from his native Iceland. He has since been

involved in various projects including guitar work

on the movies "Vita", "Hercules", and "Phantom Of

The Opera". He has also performed in orchestras

for the musicals "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Saturday

Night Fever", "Whistle Down The Wind" and the

musical "Beautiful Game" by Andrew Lloyd

Webber and Ben Elton. On record, Fridrik has

appeared with many artists including UK's pop

artists Boyzone ("No Matter What", "I Love The

Way You Love Me"), Cliff Richard ("Millennium

Prayer"), Damage, Brit Award winners A1 ("Like A

Rose"), Jose Carreras, Michael Ball, Shakatak, and

Ronan Keating.

As a solo artist he is signed to Passion Jazz in the

UK where his debut solo album A NEW DAY was

released. He is best known in the U.S. for

Espirito, his collaboration with Shakatak's Bill

Sharpe (whose album PEACE OF MIND was

released on Instinct).

Nite Flyte begins with Tony Campbell, a

seasoned jazz guitarist from East London who

has worked professionally as a musician for the

past ten years. As the founder and lead member

of the group Perception, he was signed to

Talkin' Loud. In 1992 he was invited to join the

group Act Of Faith as guitarist, songwriter and

producer, quickly establishing a reputation for

the group with albums on both Island Records

and Expansion. When the lead singer of Act of

Faith left to pursue a solo career, Tony had

already been playing guitar on the UK's

burgeoning street jazz scene that spawned

Down To The Bone. Inspired by their success,

Tony assembled a new group of top musicians

(including Simply Red session guitarist Mark

Jaimes), thus Nite Flyte was born. Their U.S.

debut album ASCENSION scored a Top 10

single with "Open Your Arms".

these rather serious jazz / funk musicians

enjoying both high ’cult' status and instant

recognition as a household name. Having

already garnered massive commercial

achievements in the UK, SHAKATAK went on to

score unprecedented successes both in Japan

(for which demand dictates they produce

exclusive albums every year), and in the USA.

Johann is the bass player with Icelandic jazz

fusion group Mezzoforte (best known for

their 80's hit single "Garden Party"). Since

that time, he has become one of Iceland's

most important bass players. His own work is

clearly inspired by such artists as Marcus

Miller and Stanley Clarke. The players

featured on his first ever solo album, SO

LOW, are amongst Iceland's finest musicians.

Act of Faith were an accomplished, somewhat ahead of their time, live and organic UK soul group when "Free" was recorded in 1996. This song comes from their Expansion album RELEASE YOURSELF which was recorded just after their one album with 4th & Broadway and before the departure of their lead singer Gary Bardouille. The group's chief mentor was Tony Campbell, who reinvented himself after the demise of the group with a new smooth jazz group Nite Flyte.

Nigel is originally from the UK where as songwriter and producer he worked with such artists as Billy Ocean and Light of The World. As a drummer he toured with Al Jarreau, The Emotions and The Real Thing before settling in Los Angeles where he was employed as an in- house producer at Motown Records. He also continued his songwriting in L.A.; "She's Gone" being one of his most fondly recalled songs for Norman Connors. This work comes from Nigel's highly acclaimed solo album SO GOOD, released by Expansion Records. It was recorded in his self-built home studio and features the vocals of Josie James - with whom he scored a UK soul hit "Win Your Love".

As founder member of and drummer with the group Shakatak, Roger Odell has been credited with co-writing many of their hits). On his solo work, he combines his old- school sensibilities with the exciting new production, arranging and keyboard skills of his son Jamie 'Jimpster' Odell. His debut album THE BLUE WINDOW (Passion Jazz) utilizes the talents of two of the UK's top jazz musicians, saxophonist Mornington Lockett and vocalist Jacqui Hicks, as well as the unique voice of Larraine Odell and her daughter Maxine. The result is a stylistic collage of contemporary music at its best. Roger chooses to record under the name Beatifik, a word he derives from beat, beatific, beatify, beatitude, and beatnik. To him, the word means happily unconventional rhythmic pulsations! You can judge for yourself when you listen to this track taken from his album.

Nathan Heathman is known in musicians' circles as a singing sensation and piano virtuoso who has played with the late Phyllis Hyman, Rachelle Farrell, Norman Connors, Jennifer Holliday, Miki Howard, Angela Bofill and Jean Carne.

He has also been known to comically play the requests of hundreds of intoxicated tourists who stumble upon the piano bar of a swanky Washington DC hotel where Heathman entertains weekly. RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW, his solo debut CD on Expansion Records, is poised to place him next to his peers like Will Downing, Luther Vandross and Peabo Bryson. FEELIN' GOOD is the debut album by pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer Noel Elmowy. It was recorded both in Sydney and Los Angeles and features musicians from the Sydney jazz scene where Noel has played since 1974, holding a residency at the legendary club "The Basement". Noel originally trained as a classical pianist before turning to jazz fusion. He has also toured as keyboard player for many prominent artists in addition to being the opening act for visiting acts to Australia such as Al Jarreau and Dizzy Gillespie, jn London, between 1980 and 1982, he hras also an integral member of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra alongside Dave Bitelli (Elton John, David Bowie, .foe Jackson), Martin Ditchum (Sade), Gordon Hunte (Sade's guitarist who is also on FEELIN' GOOD), Ray Carless and Chris Scott-Francis.

Another London groove-jazz sensation. The Jazz Steppers are greater than the sum of their parts. The band share a rich musical history having worked as top session musicians. Keyboardist Klay Dumas-Copas has worked with Diana Brown and Jocelyn Brown, and drummer / percussionist Pat Leacock has played with Down To The Bone. Bass player Dean Mark has played with Jamiroquai and Roy Ayers, while Tony Smith has played guitar with Ray Gaskins and Nelson Rangell. Their first release (the UK- only GET UP!) scored the group one of the England's most honored soul music awards, theMOBO, in 1998.

Frequently compared to such song stylists as Lou Rawls, Jon Lucien and Marvin Gaye, Nicolas Bearde has performed and recorded with a long list of notable musicians including Bobby McFerrin, Michael Bolton, Kenny Loggins and John Handy to name a few. In 1986 he joined McFerrin's "Voicestra" and toured internationally with them and another acappella group. So Vo So. He is also an accomplished film and stage actor. His credits including feature films "Final Analysis” with Richard Gere and Kim Basinger, "Pacific Heights" with Michael Keaton and "True Crime" with Clint Eastwood. In 1989 he was nominated as 'Best Male Vocalist' in the prestigious San Francisco area Cabaret Gold Awards, and a 'Best Newcomer' in Blues & Soul magazine's 1989 readers poll. This work comes from his solo album CROSSING THE LINE for Expansion Records.
