F A L L 2 0 1 9
Hoosier BMW Car Club Inc. P.O. Box 20775 • Indianapolis, IN 46220-0775
Come join your fellow Hoosier BMWCCA members for our annual holiday party and board member
elections. Again, this year, the holiday party will be at 11:30 A.M. on December 14th at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Carmel (918 S. Rangeline Rd., Carmel, IN 46032). Please RSVP and pay in advance on our website using our PayPal option. If you do not have PayPal, reach out to Kyle McGary ([email protected]) to make arrangements.
This year, we have reduced the cost to $30 per person. That will get you a nice Italian dinner from a specially prepared menu including dessert. Also, we will see the return of the famous ///M&M’s (you’ll know what we mean when you see them if you weren’t there last year). There will be some cool swag and door prizes to give away as well.

he Hoosier Chapter of the BMW Car Club did its
first Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School
(TRSS) in several years, at Martinsville High School
in Martinsville, Indiana, on September 15, 2019.
Thirty students, 15 to 19 years old, learned the
finer points of car control through exercises
designed to improve emergency handling skills.
It is really great to see the club getting back into
what may be the most important thing we do,
helping to save lives on the highway.
The club wants to thank Dreyer & Reinbold Auto
Group and D&R’s new Allstate Insurance Agency,
for the generous sponsorship of this event. More
than 35 volunteers gave up their Sunday to help
out with the program. We especially want to thank
John Lillywhite, Chris Dunlap, Stef and Andy
Simonson, and Scott Damer, for doing the really
heavy lifting to get this event off the ground.
Tire Rack Street Survival is a program of the BMWCCA Foundation
and is sponsored nationally by the Tire Rack, the South Bend, Indiana,
based tire retailer. There will be over 105 Street Survival schools this
year, presented by BMWCCA chapters, Porsche Clubs, and SCCA
Regions.
The demand for more TRSS schools in the area is huge, there were more than 20 kids on
our wait list. If you want to get involved with future TRSS schools, please let one of the
board members know. We can’t do them without your help. “This is they most important
event our club does,” said president Chris Ruel.

amila and I came to Indiana 15 years ago. We didn't know anyone here,
and like most adults, our time was filled with work
and family. But we quickly made friends, first
through Hoosier BMW and then through other car
clubs. These were people from different walks of life,
but we shared a love for cars, driving and having a
great time. These friends watched Lara during our
scenic drives (and help clean freshly eaten doritos
out of my convertible!), joined us on our driving
adventures (and misadventures), and were always
willing to help each other when needed. I've attended
three weddings and watched
your kids grow, just like you
watched Lara grow.
But most importantly, you guys
have made us feel welcome and
loved, like family. I started doing
my BBQ/Pool party as a way to
say thanks to all the wonderful
friends we have made here over
the years, and I am blessed to
have so many of you attend my 5th annual party. I am
looking forward to many more annual parties to come!

ere we are again with my last letter for the year. The last quarter has been super busy both for the club and for my life (I am sure everyone else’s as well). We had a lot of activities with the club this fall:
• Member picnic
• Windy City Chapter Track Day
• Fall Drives
• Tirerack Street Survival
• New location for Social
• Meetings at both dealerships
This winter season will be a time to enjoy time with family and friends. Also, for some, it will mean putting the BMW away for the winter, and for others it will be getting ready to greet Jack Frost with those glaring kidneys. With the new year, there will be some changes coming. One big one is going to be the format of our newsletter. I wanted to take some time here to go over some of the changes that are coming.
The national chapter is going to start providing and coordinating a “regional” newsletter (no, Roundel is not changing). This “new” newsletter will be made up of contributions of the region’s chapters to cover a broader audience and consolidate costs. For reference, we are the North Central Region. Up until now, each chapter was required to publish and mail a letter to each and every one of their members. While our chapter has been lucky to have such a strong membership, others are not so lucky and publishing a quarterly newsletter is expensive. Even for us, it’s our biggest budgeted item per year. With the advent of this regional newsletter, chapters are no longer under obligation to mail a physical letter to each member. As a matter of fact, a newsletter will not be required at all. Don’t panic! The Hoosier chapter board has discussed this and, we plan on continuing to offer our quarterly letter as we think it is an important vehicle to stay in touch with our membership. However, we will be making changes. These changes will reduce our cost as well as provide a more robust, media rich vehicle for delivery as we will no longer be under the current and soon to be past requirements. While we have not fleshed out all the details, a committee is being formed to discuss the future format.
So, with a new year brings new changes! Let’s hope this makes for a better experience for our strong membership. I do say with pride that our chapter is strong already. While many chapters nationally have been suffering from dwindling membership, ours has been in the minority with respect to those declining

s I write this tech tip, it certainly feels like fall with gusty winds, rain, and a forecasted overnight low of 36. Summer does seem out of reach, and I need to start preparing for the Indiana winter.
Seriously though, whether you are getting ready to put your baby in storage for the long winter months or need to make sure it’s roadworthy for the ice and snow, there are a few items to think about. With that in mind, here’s a checklist of items to consider this fall.

miles, 10 turns and a whole lot of track time to learn. This year, the Windy City BMW chapter hosted a 2-day HPDE at Putnam Park Road course (with additional lapping time for advanced drivers on Friday). There was a total of about 75 attendees, consisting of a number of Hoosier chapter members (including me). With 30 minute sessions and smaller class sizes, everyone had plenty of track time.
The weekend weather was perfect, and for us newbies it was a thrilling leap into the adventures of high performance driving. This event was my first experience at an HPDE, and I can tell you I learned a lot. Both the in car experience and classroom did not disappoint. By the end of the weekend, I had learned the line, increased speed, and was feeling confident in my ability to handle the car. Near the end of the day Sunday, the instructor even coached me with the traction control off so I could get a feel for how the car moves around while learning to keep it under control. Of course, when we did that I backed off about ten percent of my attack. While this was my first track day, it certainly will not be my last. I am looking forward to next year and hopefully meeting up with the Windy City group again. Thanks for a great weekend!

erfect weather, great company, and fantastic food made for another stellar member picnic!
This year’s picnic was at Shelter A, not Lily Lake, which provided lots of room, extra tables, and no pesky fishermen. Park entry fees were waived (reach out to Chris Ruel if you attended and did not get reimbursed), and the Hoosier BMW CCA Chapter banner and feather flags flew high.
With temperatures in the 70’s and clear skies, the weather could not have been better, and Rick and Maggie Schue once again provided hours of preparation to make the cookout flawless.
There were a number of new members in attendance, and everyone enjoyed catching up over some great BBQ (or should we call it Schue-B-Q)! Thanks to everyone who attended and made the 2019 Member Picnic a hit! See you next year!

• Top off the fluids. Consider adding a fuel stabilizer.
• Connect your battery tender. Make sure to check it every couple weeks to ensure connection is secure and power is still flowing.
• Wash and wax the car and then apply a good fitting cover.
• Prevent pest infestation. Consider adding fabric sheets to cabin and trunk and closing off exhaust and air inlets.
• Check insurance coverage. Consider dropping the liability and collision portion, but make sure to keep comprehensive.
Ready for the open road
• Wash and wax the car.
• Check tire pressure and tread. Consider swapping out all season tires for winter tires.
• Check antifreeze (mixture should be 50:50). Consider testing or flushing if unsure of mixture content.

he Hoosier Chapter of the BMW Car Club did its
first Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School
