Hello parents,We wanted to share with you that in the learning packet for the week of April 20, you
will find a daily social-emotional activity. These activities will help your child learn what
to do when someone is not respecting their feelings, boundaries, or personal
space. Talking with your child about these concepts is beneficial, but a young child’s
learning can be additionally enhanced by adding visual cues. Visual cues help kids
make sense of their world. For preschoolers, stretching their arms out wide and looking
from side to side is a great way to show them how much space they should give their
friends when walking or playing. Helping your child make a plan for what to do when
someone isn’t respecting their boundaries, or is in their bubble, will give your child the
chance to practice standing up for themselves. We have included some scenarios in
the lesson plans that you can use to practice with your child.

• Sing the song Old McDonald using the letter “q” sound for animal sounds. Ex: “Old McDonald had a farm, e-i-e-i-o. And on that farm he had a “q,” que- qui- que-qui-quo.” Find the song at the end of the packet.
Math
Point to an object that does not
belong to a group.
• Write down the letter “Q” and the numbers 1, 2, and 3 on a piece of scrap paper. Ask
your child to point to the one that does not belong. (The letter Q does not belong because it is a letter and not a number.)

• Show your child the letter “Qq.” Tell them the name of the letter and the sound it makes. Ask your child to find as many “Qq’s” as they can in the “Qq” poem at the end of the packet. They can point to them or circle them, saying the name of the letter and the sound it makes.
Math
Use a non-standard tool to measure length/height
• Trace your child’s foot on 8-10 pieces of
scrap paper with a pencil or crayon. Cut outeach foot to use for measuring height and/or length for different items in your home. (Ex: table, chair, window, rug, books, etc.) Ask your child to count how many “feet” were used to measure each item.
Social /Emotional

• Cut out 15 small squares of paper. Write the letter
“Q” on 10 squares and other letters on the 5
remaining squares. Put the squares in a pile on
the table. Show your child one square at a time.
Tell them when they see the letter “Q” to
“quack” like a duck and stop when you put it
down. If the letter is not a “Q”, tell them to
“freeze!” (Don’t move at all.)
Math
Copy a simple pattern
• Talk to your child about the different sounds farm
animals make. Make a simple sound pattern
(AB) using 2 different farm animal sounds. (Ex:
quack, moo, quack - moo, quack, moo). Ask
them to repeat the sounds after you.
Social /Emotional
Review personal space and boundaries
• Sing the “Bubble Song” with your child. Help
them make a plan for what to say when
someone (like a relative) is expecting a hug or
kiss from them and they do not like to hug or kiss.
Let them know it is “ok” to say, “I don’t want a
hug or kiss,” or “No, thank you.” Let them know
that giving or getting them is a choice. (Ask the
person to give a wave or a fist bump instead.)

3 yr. Old Skill Activity
Literacy
Begin to recognize other words that
start with the same sound as
own name
• Play a game with your child by repeating their name and another word that begins with the same sound. Ask them if the beginning sound is the same or different. Have your child show thumbs up (same) or thumbs down (different). Emphasize the beginning sound when you are saying the words. Repeat with words that have the same/different beginning sound as their name.
Math
Begin to understand
objects that are same or different
• Using the picture cards included at the end of the packet, have your child identify which cards have the same pictures or different pictures. Sort into piles of same and different.
Social/Emotional
Join in
cooperative play
• Use the top/lid of a box and 2- 3 small balls. With a knife carefully cut out 2 – 3 holes in the box either in a straight line, or diagonally depending on how big the box is. (You could also use an old towel.) Place the balls in the box and see if you and your child can get the balls to drop through the holes.
4 yr. Old Skill Activity
LiteracyPlay with blending individual sounds
in CVC words(consonant/
vowel/consonant) such as cat, dog
• Find pictures in magazines, books, puzzles or hand drawn of words that have the CVC spelling such as cat, dog, cap, top hen etc. Say the word for your child, sounding out each individual sound such as c – a – t . See if your child can blend the sounds together to tell you what the word is. To make it easier, have the pictures on the table so they have a visual aid.
Math
Understanding what
is the same and
what is different
• Using the picture cards included at the end of the packet, have your child identify which cards have the same pictures or different pictures. Sort into piles of same and different.
Social/emotional
Take 4+ turns in an activity
• Use the top/lid of a box and 2- 3 small balls. With a knife carefully cut out 2 – 3 holes in the box either in a straight line, or diagonally depending on how big the box is. (You could also use an old towel.) Place the balls in the box and see if you and your child can get the balls to drop through the holes.
Parent Friendly Skill Based ActivitiesApril 27-30
Tuesday
3 yr. Old Skill Activity
Literacy
Take 3-4 turns in a
conversation
• Have your child help you do the dishes, or any
other house-hold task. While you are working
together ask them questions to start a
conversation. Have the child take at least 4 turns in
telling you something about the task. While doing
dishes, for example: Parent (P) What soap should
we use? Child (C) Is the blue one the right soap?
P – Why do you think we use that kind of soap? C –
It gets the dishes clean. Keep this conversation
going for up to 3 or 4 turns for each person.
Math
Predict what comes
next in an established
pattern
• Use things from your house such as socks, Legos,
cups, plates, golf tees, etc. Start a pattern with a
big cup, little cup, big cup. Then ask your child
what size comes next. You can also do colors -
blue sock, blue sock white sock, blue sock, blue
sock. Ask your child what comes next. Practice
other patterns with sound, movement, color, shape
and size.
Gross Motor
Bounce, catch and
kick a ball
• On a piece of paper, draw a circle and divide it
into sections like a pie. On each section, print
different types of movements you can do with a
ball - throw, catch with 2 hands, kick, bounce etc.
Put the paper on the ground and have your child
toss a pebble onto the paper to see what they do
with the ball. Then do the movement.
4 yr. Old Skill Activity
Literacy
Ask and answer
“how” questions to
gain new information
• Think ahead and write down some “how” questions
to ask your child when you are having a
conversation, doing any task, or playing together.
For example, “Tell me how you will build a block
tower?” “How do you show people you care?”
“How do you think animals talk to each other?” or
ask any “how” questions as you are reading books
together.
Math
Copy a growing
pattern
• Using paper and a marker, help your child to draw
a growing pattern. A growing pattern is something
that changes every time it repeats, adding
something new to build the pattern. You could
draw ice cream cones along the bottom of a
page, and have your child draw the ice cream
scoops on each cone, adding one more to each
cone.
Gross Motor
Bounce, catch and
kick a ball
•On a piece of paper, draw a circle and divide it into

Recognize difference
between letters,
numbers and other
symbols with support
• Cut out small squares of paper, or use index
cards if you have them. On each piece of paper
write a different letter, number or symbol such as
?, @. Or, cut out letters, numbers and symbols
from the newspaper, magazines or junk mail.
Have your child sort them into piles of letters,
numbers or symbols. Help your child as needed
to understand why they are different.
Math
Match sets of objects
for 1 to 1
correspondence
• Make small squares of paper with the numbers
from 1 to 5. In a muffin tin, put paper with
numbers from 1 to 5. So each muffin cup will
have just one number. Lay out small objects like
paper clips or pebbles or leaves. Have your
child put the right amount of the objects to
match the number in the muffing cup.
Science
Begins to understand
the concept of
morning and night
• Talk to your child about the different things that
happen in your house in the morning and at
night. Discuss daily activities and have them tell
you if it happens in the morning or at night. For
example: putting pajamas on and brushing teeth
- morning or night? Having breakfast - morning or
night?

the alphabet
• In a muffin tin put different upper-case letters written on small pieces of paper. Place at least 5 more of the same letters on the table all mixed up. Have your child sort the letters into the correct muffin cup. As they are doing it help them name each letter. Next time you do it you can use all lower-case letters.
Math
Demonstrate an understanding of
concepts one, two and more up to 5,
see and understand numbers without
counting
• Give your child 5 items such as Legos, pencils, or paper clips. Tell your child you are going to put out a certain number of items, and to look at them, Then quickly cover them. See if your child can remember how many were shown and put out the same amount. Reveal your items to see if your child remembered correctly.
Science
Name foods grown on a farm that
people eat
• Talk to your child about foods that are grown on a farm; like corn, tomatoes, cucumbers etc. Have them draw a picture of these foods as you talk about them. Read a book about farms if you have one or look for pictures of things grown on a farm in magazines or grocery ads.
