Grandparents Afternoon NSW Grandparents Day celebrates the contributions grandparents make to their families and communities. It recognises the diversity of grandparent relationships across age groups, cultural backgrounds, and geographical locations. This year NSW Grandparents Day will be celebrated on Sunday 27 October. Riverbank Public School warmly invites our grandparents to join us on Tuesday 29 October between 1.45pm - 2:45pm for an afternoon of fun in our classrooms. We understand that some of our students may not have a grandparent able to attend; therefore, they are more than welcome to invite a special person such as an aunt, uncle or family friend to come along. An invitation will be sent home. Year 2 Swim School Riverbank Public School has been successful in applying for the ‘School Swimming and Water Safety Program’. This is an intensive learn to swim program, which develops water confidence and provides students with basic skills in water safety and survival. The program is conducted over ten days. Each daily lesson is 45 minutes. Instruction will take place at Riverstone Pool commencing Term 4 Week 7, Monday 25 November and finish in Week 8, Friday 6 December. The program is provided free by the Department of Education and has been successfully running for over 50 years. The cost of $70 covers the daily transport to and from the venue as well as pool entry. There are only 120 available places for Riverbank students in year 2. An expression of interest note has been sent home to all year 2 students. Annual School Colour Fun Run Fundraiser Friday 27 September Each year we have held a walk-a-thon to raise money for RPS. This year, I have decided to hold a School Colour Fun-Run to raise money so that classes will have a ratio of 1:2 iPads in all K-4 classrooms. We have set a fundraising target of $20,000 and need everyone to participate if we are going to smash our goal! Sponsorship forms and letters have been sent home. Anyone who raises at least $10 will earn a prize. In addition, the more money you raise, the better the prizes! Therefore, work hard and you might be able to earn yourself a karaoke machine, Xbox One or even a hover board! Students can create a profile online at schoolfundraising.com.au

STARTING KINDERGARTEN or New to RIVERBANK IN 2020 We are now accepting enrolments for 2020. If you know of any future students who have not yet enrolled, it would assist our organisation greatly if you could please prompt them to enrol. Being able to accurately predict student numbers ahead of time enables recruitment and procurement processes to be more streamlined and effective. When students enrol late, we are less prepared. Please contact the office staff if you have not yet completed an enrolment application or if you require assistance. ZooSnooz Report Our Year 4 students enjoyed a fantastic trip to Taronga Zoo. Students participated in a variety of native and non-native animal centred educational experiences. They saw many of the behind-the-scenes activities that are not usually available to the public, providing an insight into many of the initiatives that Taronga focuses on to support the changing habitats of animals from around the world. Some of the activities our students experienced: • Meet and greet with the Zoo Staff where they stayed either in the Taronga Information Centre or in student tents. • V.I.P. night tour of the zoo where they saw many animals in their night routines, asking the zookeepers many questions and learning many amazing facts about the animals they saw. • Morning tour, visiting special buildings where they keep the animals overnight as well as a special tour of the Tasmanian Devil habitat. • Two informative talks about the plight of many animals. • Interacting with many animals. • Teacher-guided tour of the zoo. Students planned their journey around the zoo based on their interests. • Eating delicious ice cream while they looked out over Sydney Harbour at night.

Restorative Practices Restorative Practices form the relational basis for Quality Teaching and Learning at Riverbank Public School. Our Restorative Practice Framework, because of its explicit nature, offers a common language and practice capable of fostering healthy relationships. Student achievement is enhanced through Restorative values being embedded as a way of being and learning together. Our approach fosters individual responsibility and helps develop empathy. Inappropriate behaviour or choices and mistakes can be viewed as an opportunity for insight, learning and development in both the academic and social domains. The explicit framework is inextricably linked to the Quality Teaching Framework and includes the following sets of questions to be asked by children, teachers and parents. When Things Go Wrong…..When Someone Has Been Hurt • What happened? • What were you thinking of at the time? • What have you thought about since? • Who has been affected by what you have done? In what way? • What do you think you may do to make things right? • What did you think when you realised what happened? • What impact has this incident had on you and others? • What has been the hardest thing for you? • What do you think needs to happen to make things right?
The process is empowering as it takes students from the past to the present and gives them hope for the future. It empowers them to make things right and heal any harm that has been done. A restorative classroom setting is one that values dialogue through an inclusive approach where everyone expects to be heard and through this participatory process, students develop the capacity to learn that emotions are an important and legitimate expression of healthy dialogue. This process helps students to deal with conflict, tensions and difference in respectful ways that engender trust and foster healthy relationships.

LIBRARY NEWSLETTER T3W8/2019
Off the Shelf
WHAT’S NEWS We are so fortunate to be part of a community of diverse backgrounds with many languages other than English spoken at home. With the myriad of benefits in speaking another language, Riverbank Library is proud to showcase our new collection of bilingual books.
*Each book is labelled with a sticker to show that it is a LANGUAGE BACKGROUND OTHER THAN ENGLISH (LBOTE).
*These books are kept in a special area of the Library so students can find them easily.
*The language the book is written in is provided on the title page of the book.
*Students may borrow a bilingual book as an additional book to their loan limit. Eg: Kindergarten are allowed to borrow one book per week, however, if they choose a bilingual book this can be a second book to take if it is a language spoken in their home.
*Our collection will continue to grow. Not all languages are catered for at the moment and some languages are more challenging to source. As the books are not mass printed, they a great deal more than if the book was printed only in English so we are urging everyone to take extra special care of these beautiful books. Our goal is to have at least one bilingual book for every language spoken at home at RPS – and we have 43 different languages identified as the first language spoken at home.
*Languages currently catered for: Arabic, Bengali, Dari, Farsi, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Korean, Malayalam, Mandarin, Maori, Marathi, Nepali, Pashto, Polish, Portugese, Punjabi, Samoan, Sinhalese, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese. We also have various Indigenous Languages including: Djambarrpuyngu, Gamilaraay, Kriol, Darug and Kukatja.
*Parents are welcome to come to Library before school and after school to borrow with their child.
Student Feedback “My parents said ‘Wow! Where did you get this book?’” Jacelyn 3B Punjabi “Good job! You should start borrowing more Punjabi books.” Mehar 3B Punjabi “It was amazing to have a book in my language from my Library.” Aisha 2F Urdu “It’s good practice for children currently learning their home language. Sometimes when your Grandparents visit, it’s a good useful thing that we have these books in the Library” Patricia 4J Arabic
