These additional papers of Jared T. Newman and his family [see 1958-1962

Report] include a letter (Port-au-Prince, 1803) from Joseph Lafayette

LePine, the maternal grandfather of Newman's mother, Cornelia Ann Treman

(Mrs. Isaac Harmon Newman), to his mother-in-law, Margaret Kearney, con­

cerning his removal with his motherless children from France to Haiti and

referring to the troubled conditions on the island; three letters and an

accounting in French (Paris, 1843) concerning an indemnity France paid to

LePine's daughter, Newman's grandmother, Anna Marie Louise (LePine)

Paddock Treman (Mrs. Jared Treman), for losses her family suffered during

the slave revolts in Haiti, and reminiscences (4 pp. typescript carbon,

1889) written by Adrian(n)a Leonora Treman King, Newman's aunt, concerning

her mother's life after her grandfather Joseph's disappearance and presumed

death in Haiti. Also, Newman's own correspondence and related papers,

including a letter (1875) from a friend and fraternity brother, Wilmot

Moses Smith ('74), concerning Newman's recent graduation from Cornell and

his plans for the future, draft of a letter (1891) to William Ozmun Wyckoff,

expressing his interest in the Republican nomination for the judgeship of

Tompkins County and assessing his chances of receiving it; a letter (1892)

from Eugene Frayer ('76), written the spring that Charles Kendall Adams'

resigned as President of Cornell University, telling Newman that he was

misquoted by a New York Tribune reporter whose news story gave the impres­

sion that he had compared Adams with Andrew D. White to the detriment of

the latter and giving him his candid opinion of Adams and his administra-

tion; his report as Alumni Trustee (1898) and a copy of a letter (1925)

to Professor Floyd K. Richtmyer, outlining his views on the objectives of

a proposed school of religion at Cornell; an abstract of correspondence

(1922-1936) between Newman and Charles H. Blood concerning the construction

of gas and water lines and other matters relating to the development of

Cayuga Hei(Jhts and the minutes of the organization meeting of the Cayuga

Heights Land Corporation (1928); a memoranda book and business and personal

correspondence; MS. and printed matter concerning his interest in the Ithaca

office (1913); copies of letters of introduction to Parisians and Americans

ti~e Field Artillery, American Expeditionary Forces, and other correspon­

dence, reports, and memoranda (1917-1925) concerning his service in World

War I and his veterans' claims; letters of condolence and memorial resolu-

tions received on the death of his father (1937); and correspondence with

Gerald C. Williams, Frederick R. Stevens, and others (1938, 1953) concern-
