'Today' is the Day

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C)

Malachi 3:19-20

Psalm 98:5-9

2 Thessalonians 3:7-12

Luke 21:5-19

It is the age between our Lord's first coming and His last. We

live in the new world begun by His life, death, Resurrec=on

and Ascension, by the sending of His Spirit upon the Church.

But we await the day when He will come again in glory.

"Lo, the day is coming," Malachi warns in today's First

Reading. The prophets taught Israel to look for the Day of

the Lord, when He would gather the na=ons for judgment

(see Zephaniah 3:8; Isaiah 3:9; 2 Peter 3:7).

Jesus an=cipates this day in today's Gospel. He cau=ons us

not to be deceived by those claiming "the =me has come."

Such decep=on is the background also for today's Epistle

(see 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3).

The signs Jesus gives His Apostles seem to already have come

to pass in the New Testament. In Acts, the Epistles and

Revela=on, we read of famines and earthquakes, the

Temple's desola=on. We read of persecu=ons - believers

imprisoned and put to death, tes=fying to their faith with

wisdom in the Spirit.

These "signs" then, show us the paDern for the Church's life -

both in the New Testament and today.

We too live in a world of na=ons and kingdoms at war. And

we should take the Apostles as our "models," as today's

Epistle counsels. Like them we must persevere in the face of

unbelieving rela=ves and friends, and forces and authori=es

hos=le to God.

As we do in today's Psalm, we should sing His praises, joyfully

proclaim His coming as Lord and King. The Day of the Lord is

always a day that has already come and a day s=ll yet to

come. It is the "today" of our Liturgy.

The Apostles prayed maranatha - "O Lord come!"

(see 1 Corinthians 16:22; Revela=on 22:20). In the Eucharist

He answers, coming again as the Lord of hosts and the Sun of

Jus=ce with its healing rays. It is a mighty sign - and a pledge

of that Day to come.

Jesus is the Anointed One—

the ultimate priest, prophet and king

foreshadowed throughout the

Hebrew Scriptures.

Please join in this wonderful program. As the holiday

season approaches, consider taking time out to prepare

spiritually and reflect on the deeper meaning behind what

we celebrate in Jesus; and to grow in our understanding of

how he is the fulfillment of the biblical archetypes of priest,

prophet and king. Bishop Barron’s program greatly assists

in helping to better understand these titles in context to

Jesus and the role we are called to realize in our own

priestly, prophetic and kingly mission.

The program will be held over three Tuesday evenings:

November 15, 22 & 29 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the

church hall at Our Lady of Hope. For more information,

please contact the rectory at 978-356-3944. There is no cost

or formal registration required. However, if you would

please let us know if you would like to attend to allow us to

adequately plan for seating.

November: All Souls Month

November is traditionally the month of All Souls.

As Roman Catholics, we believe that it is good to pray for and

remember those who have gone before us. As a parish, we will

be doing this in the following way. We will continue the custom

of “All Souls envelope” ...if you are on our envelope system you received an

envelope in your October offertory packets. For those

who do not receive parish envelopes and/or those who

want specific prayers offered for your loved ones

during the month, All Souls envelopes will be available

at the doors of the church. To offer prayers for your loved

one, please fill in the names of those you want remem-

bered and return them in the offertory collections over

the next few weekends. All of these names will be placed

near the altar and be remembered in Masses during the

month.

In addition, there will be a special Memorial Mass

Sunday, November 13th at 9:30a.m. for all who were

buried from our parish this past year.

There will be refreshments and fellowship

after Mass in the Hall. All are Welcome!!!

Season. Audi=ons are open to all members of the diocese who

submit a video of themselves singing their vocal part of Angel’s

A Spirituality of the Present Moment

An AugusZnian, a Franciscan, and a Jesuit all die and go to

heaven. Jesus asks each one: “If you could go back, what

would you change about your life?” The AugusZnian

pondered and then said, “There’s so much sin in the world.

If I went back, I’d try and stop people from commi`ng so

much sin.”

The Franciscan thought a bit before saying, “There’s so

much poverty in the world. If I went back, I’d try and get

people to share more of their wealth with the poor.”

The Jesuit looked at Jesus and said, “If I went back, I’d

change my doctor.”

In his autobiography, Igna=us explains how, toward the end

of his life, the thought of his own death filled him with intense

joy. The prospect of soon being reunited with his Creator and

Lord made him “melt into tears.” At the same =me, Igna=us

was in love with life. He could find God in all things and serve

him in every ac=vity and event, just as his spirituality teaches

us. There was no need to wait un=l aWer death to taste the joy

of God’s presence. In prac=ce, finding God in all things gives us

the opportunity to consider our lives here and now as the

precise place where we can already experience the fullness

of God’s love.

Igna=us, with his genuine insight into human nature, warned

against two possible piXalls in the spiritual life: nostalgia for

the past and needless dreaming about the future. It makes

sense to look back on past experiences, for in doing so we can

trace specific moments of God’s presence. We recognize his

presence in experiences of peace and joy, vitality and trust.

Our past can provide a rich source of learning, especially since

we can use =mes of reflec=on to inspire our choices. Such

ongoing reflec=on gives us the opportunity to adapt our lives

now so that they’re more closely linked to the ways God is

drawing us. But we can also get stuck in our own past and end

up watching the same film over and over. Whether that is a

consequence of regret or anger, the result is the same: we

allow ourselves to withdraw from the only =me that really

exists—the present.
