Jesus often faced people critical of his beliefs and values. In today's Gospel Jesus is approached by some Saddu- cees who question him about the resurrection. They were powerful. They drew their members mainly from the well-to- do class, the higher officials, wealthy merchants, landowners and priests. Politically the Sadducees accepted Roman rule and customs in exchange for retaining their power and influence. Many of their opponents regarded them as political collaborators with the Romans and therefore traitors. They were also religiously conservative. Unlike the Pharisees they rejected the authority of oral tradition. They also did not believe in the resurrection. In today's Gospel they attempt to ridicule the belief in the resurrection of the dead by recalling Mosaic Law. This law stated that if a man dies and has no son his brother must marry the widow so that the "first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his brother who is dead". In this way the continuity of the family line was guaranteed. The Sad- ducees develop an example to the point of absurdity in today’s gospel by referring to seven brothers each of whom mar- ries the same woman, but each of whom dies childless. So they ask Jesus: Whose wife would the woman be in the res- urrection Jesus does not fall into their trap. He makes it clear that there is no comparison between human life, shared by all, and the resurrection, shared by those who are children of God. Jesus makes the distinction between the people of this age who live an earthly life and the just who are resurrected from the dead. He points out that if the Lord is God of the living, then he will continue to be so to those who have died. This kind of situation is faced in all walks of life. It is met in different ways one of which is fundamentalism. Fundamentalism is the reduction of reality to some manageable norms. It eventually becomes irrelevant whether these norms represent reality correctly or not. Once these norms are adopted they must be defended and no deviation is toler- ated. If I establish that by following these norms I am right, I will have to say at least by implication, that everyone else is wrong. What the Sadducees did in today’s gospel is very characteristic of fundamentalists. They are not looking for truth but only to prove that they are right. Any religious group has to be careful of fundamentalists. Pope Francis has spoken numerous times about the need for the Church to be more Christ-like. He said a few years ago: I see clearly that the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs near- ness, proximity. The church sometimes has locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules. The most important thing is the first proclamation: Jesus Christ has saved you. Let us be open to the spirit and be more Christ-like in our actions and deeds rather than resort to fundamentalism. We have been blessed with a very active parish. Scheduling all the events and regular group meetings is a real challenge. When reserving the meeting room, chapel, church or gym, please make sure you are accurate in regards to the time you will need the space. Sometimes people or groups fail to list the time that is needed to set up or clean up. This can cause an overlap of activities. We want all to be able to use our facilities and have enough time for their meet- ing or event. Again I want to thank everyone who participated in our “Renew and Rebuild” campaign. As of the last count, we have $563,140 in pledges from 177 families. I would like to encourage those families who have not made a pledge to do so. Please speak to me after mass or you can get information on the campaign from the table in the back of the Church. Those who have made pledges, you will be receiving an envelope in the mail that you can use to send your payment directly to the Renew and Rebuild office of the Archdiocese of NY. Jesus often faced people critical of his beliefs and values. In today's Gospel Jesus is approached by some Saddu-

cees who question him about the resurrection. They were powerful. They drew their members mainly from the well-to-

do class, the higher officials, wealthy merchants, landowners and priests.

Politically the Sadducees accepted Roman rule and customs in exchange for retaining their power and influence.

Many of their opponents regarded them as political collaborators with the Romans and therefore traitors. They were

also religiously conservative. Unlike the Pharisees they rejected the authority of oral tradition. They also did not believe

in the resurrection.

In today's Gospel they attempt to ridicule the belief in the resurrection of the dead by recalling Mosaic Law. This law

stated that if a man dies and has no son his brother must marry the widow so that the "first son whom she bears shall

succeed to the name of his brother who is dead". In this way the continuity of the family line was guaranteed. The Sad-

ducees develop an example to the point of absurdity in today’s gospel by referring to seven brothers each of whom mar-

ries the same woman, but each of whom dies childless. So they ask Jesus: Whose wife would the woman be in the res-

urrection

Jesus does not fall into their trap. He makes it clear that there is no comparison between human life, shared by

all, and the resurrection, shared by those who are children of God. Jesus makes the distinction between the people of

this age who live an earthly life and the just who are resurrected from the dead. He points out that if the Lord is God of

the living, then he will continue to be so to those who have died.

This kind of situation is faced in all walks of life. It is met in different ways one of which is fundamentalism.

Fundamentalism is the reduction of reality to some manageable norms. It eventually becomes irrelevant whether these

norms represent reality correctly or not. Once these norms are adopted they must be defended and no deviation is toler-

ated. If I establish that by following these norms I am right, I will have to say at least by implication, that everyone else

is wrong.

What the Sadducees did in today’s gospel is very characteristic of fundamentalists. They are not looking for

truth but only to prove that they are right. Any religious group has to be careful of fundamentalists. Pope Francis has

spoken numerous times about the need for the Church to be more Christ-like. He said a few years ago: I see clearly that

the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs near-

ness, proximity. The church sometimes has locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules. The most important

thing is the first proclamation: Jesus Christ has saved you. Let us be open to the spirit and be more Christ-like in our

actions and deeds rather than resort to fundamentalism.

We have been blessed with a very active parish. Scheduling all the events and regular group meetings is a real

challenge. When reserving the meeting room, chapel, church or gym, please make sure you are accurate in regards to

the time you will need the space. Sometimes people or groups fail to list the time that is needed to set up or clean up.

This can cause an overlap of activities. We want all to be able to use our facilities and have enough time for their meet-

ing or event.

Again I want to thank everyone who participated in our “Renew and Rebuild” campaign. As of the last count,

we have $563,140 in pledges from 177 families. I would like to encourage those families who have not made a pledge to

do so. Please speak to me after mass or you can get information on the campaign from the table in the back of the

Church. Those who have made pledges, you will be receiving an envelope in the mail that you can use to send your

payment directly to the Renew and Rebuild office of the Archdiocese of NY. Please do not bring payments to the

church office.

vember 16th at 6pm. Our Lady of Providence, the Patroness of Puerto Rico has been celebrated by our parish for many
