COVID19 REPORT

Sacred Heart Parish received a report last week that two people, members of the same household, who attended the 4:00 p.m. Mass on December 24 was subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. On the evening of Sunday, January 3rd, WCVB Channel 5 reported the incident in their evening news and we have received calls and emails asking if the church is closed however, the date of this incident might not have been clear to viewers.

As soon as we were notified by the individual of the positive test result, we notified the Archdiocese and the City of Boston Board of Health for guidance and we have been following their guidance. Everyone who attended the 4:00 p.m. Mass on Christmas Eve has been notified by either email or phone call of the positive COVID-19 test result. We have cleaned and disinfected all the spaces in the church used during the service. So far we haven’t heard or been notified of any other cases originating from contact in church with the two people mentioned above.

Nativity scene—when should I take it down? Actually... customs vary from place to place and there is no absolute rule. In some places it may be customary to remove the crib after the Epiphany. In others, and perhaps more commonly, after the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Sunday after the Epiphany. In some countries it is not unusual to retain some Christmas decorations until the feast of the Presenta-tion of the Lord on Feb. 2. St. John Paul II would make his last visit to the crib in St. Peter's Square after celebrating the evening Mass on Feb. 2. After this visit the Nativity scene was dismantled.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Every year is different from the previous one but 2021 began for me in a completely unexpected way. A few

days before the end of the year, I was briefly exposed to someone who was later tested positive for Covid. I

had to quarantine and get tested, following the protocols for the local board of health. It was not what I had

expected but I am thankful to God for having kept me safe and healthy: I later tested negative to the virus and

I’m doing fine. The person who tested positive to Covid is also getting better are ready to get back to normal

soon. Thanks be to God.

Today we are celebrating the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. It’s the last day of Christmastide and tomorrow

we are back to Ordinary Time. Before beginning His ministry, Jesus went to the Jordan river to be baptized by

John. Christ enters the Jordan to wash away the sins of the world. After Jesus’ baptism, Mark says that

”heavens were torn opened”. Until that day heaven and earth were separated due to the sin of Adam and Eve,

God was not accessible to man but remained a mysterious presence looming over man from His inaccessible

kingdom. Today this “wall” of separation is torn down and heaven is again accessible to man.

Heaven is open and so we can hear God speaking to us: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well

pleased.” (Mk 1:11) Each of the Gospel writers reveal this most glorious event, they all depict the presence of

the Blessed Trinity at the river Jordan: God the Father speaks from heaven, God the Son is baptized and God

the Holy Spirit descends on him in the form of a dove.

The baptism, proclaimed by God, heralds the beginning of Jesus’ public life. Jesus’ public ministry is very

much at odds with what we consider to be an “effective communication strategy”. In our modern society you

need to be loud and visible if you want people to notice you and start listening to you. The louder you shout on

social media, on tv etc, the more people will pay attention to you. Jesus’ instead came to “bring forth justice

to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street.” Jesus’ ministry is charac-

terized by tenderness, discretion and attention to the single person. Jesus came not to preach loudly to an

anonymous crowd but to go after and look for each one of us, who are scared, confused and lost without Him,

like “bruised reeds” and “smoldering wicks”.

Archdiocesan Protocols for Parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston

As of September 22, 2020

N.B. Everywhere that this document refers to the wearing of masks, it should be understood that the mask covers both the mouth and the nose.

Protocols for indoor Masses

1. All people entering the church who are older than five years old must be wearing a mask, and must continue wearing the mask until they leave, unless they have a specific speaking/singing role at the Mass.

a. Children under the age of two should not wear a mask.

b. Children from ages two to five should wear a mask only at the discretion of their parents.

c. If a person has a medical condition that makes it impossible for them to wear a mask, they can be exempted, and they do not need to present any documentation of that condition.

d. If a person refuses to wear a mask and it clearly is not a case as outlined in (c), the pastor can refuse them entry to the church.

2. When inside the church and while entering/exiting the church, all people who are not a part of the same household must maintain a distance of six feet from one another.

a. Churches need to be clearly marked as to where people can sit, and volunteers need to be trained to help people to sit in the right places.

b. That six foot distance should be maintained as people approach to receive Holy Communion.

3. A system must be in place to track the number of people who have come to a Mass, so that the church does not fill beyond safe capacity. A parish may choose to keep a list of people who have attended Mass.

4. Temperatures of all volunteers must be taken before they volunteer at Mass.

5. A limited number of lay people can be trained to provide liturgical ministry safely. This includes readers, can-tors, instrumentalists, and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist.

a. When the minister is exercising his or her ministry (the cantor singing, the reader reading) they can remove their mask, but no one should be closer than six feet to them during that time. When they have finished their speaking or singing role, they should put their masks back on.

b. The communicant must wear a mask while receiving Communion. After the minister has moved on to the next person, or after the communicant has stepped aside, they should remove their mask, consume the Host, and put their mask back on before returning to their seats.

c. The norm must be that communion is given in the hands. In the case of a person insisting on receiving on the tongue, if the priest feels comfortable doing so, he can disinfect his hands, give the communicant Holy Communion on the tongue, disinfect his hands again, and continue distributing Communion

6. All seating must be disinfected after each Mass.

Additional Protocols for Inside Masses for Parishes in the Red Zones

7. Temperatures of all people must be taken before they enter the church. Anyone with a temperature of greater than 100.4 Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) should not be admitted.

8. Strict lists must be kept of all people attending the Mass.
