ABOUT THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS (INDIA)The Institution of Engineers (India) or IEI is the largest multidisciplinary body in India that encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global platform from which they can share professional interest. Presently, IEI has membership strength over 8,00,000. Established in 1920, with its HQrs at 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata 700 020, IEI has served the engineering fraternity for over nine decades. In this period of time, it has been inextricably linked with the history of modern-day engineering. In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India to be accorded this honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a place of pride in almost every prestigious and relevant organization across the globe. IEI functions among professional engineers, academicians and research scholars. It provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government, Industries, Academia and the Engineering fraternity by operating from over 114 centres located across the country. The Institution has established R&D centres at various locations in the country and also provides grant-in-aid to its members to conduct research and development on engineering subjects. IEI conducts Section A & B Examinations in different Engineering disciplines, the successful completion of which is recognised as equivalent to Degree in appropriate field of Engineering from recognized Universities of India by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India. Every year as many as 90,000 candidates appear for these exams. For details please see the website: www.ieindia.org ABOUT IEI, JSCFrom a little hut to a campus with a two storied building, two-conference halls, each capable of seating 100 people, office, library, guest house and an auditorium for 300 people, 3 class rooms for continuous education has been an impressive journey. This has been possible only due to the hard work by fellow members, State Government, Public Sector Undertakings and Private Sector Organisations. At present around 3000 members including Associates, 7500 student members are enrolled with Jharkhand State Centre. This is an achievement in comparison to 87 corporate members in 1961. Jharkhand State Centre is designated as 'A' category centre by the Institution of Engineers (India). The centre has been actively engaged in voicing its concerns over many issues from time to time and call on engineers to face the challenges to emphasis on the engineer's role in Society and engineers as managers. The Centre has been organising cultural programmes to inculcate bond among members and their families. Independence Day and Republic Day are celebrated with family members every year. Telecom Day and World Environment Day are also celebrated every year. INTRODUCTIONSteel production in India has grown at a CAGR of 7% annually from 65.84 Mt in 2009-10 to 89.78 Mt in 2015-16. The per capita consumption of finished steel in the

ndcountry has risen from 51 kg in 2009-10 to about 61.9 kg in 2015-16. India is poised to become the 2 largest steel producer in the world in near future as several large steelmaking plants both in PSUs and private sectors, which are at different stages of construction, become operational. With rising consumption of steel in the domestic market, greater demand for steel in the rural market, rapid growth of infrastructure construction, manufacturing sector and the thriving automobile and railways sectors in the country, domestic steel production is set to make a giant leap forward in near future. Considering India's comparatively low per capita steel consumption and the expected rise in consumption, huge scope for growth of steel industries lies ahead. Steel Policy makers of the country has already projected that steelmaking capacity of India is going to be 300 Mt by the year 2030. This poses a great challenge as well as opportunity to Indian steelmakers to stand up the occasion and make a firm road map to achieve the same in available time with optimum capital investment and with utmost care of flora and fauna . In order to economise on energy consumption, improve quality of products and optimise on land use, all major

3existing and new producers are installing integrated steel plants with highly technology intensive large Blast Furnaces of capacity 4,000 m and more, large BOFs with matching secondary refining facilities and state-of-the-art thin/thick slab and billet casters and finishing trains of hot strip and other rolling mills. The infrastructure requirement for meeting the above target is immense and needs a thorough deliberation for faster and economic transportation of raw materials and finished goods. Above all, financing of mega projects and its return on investment is a very critical issue which needs to be firmed at the start of the project. Keeping the above in mind, the proposed seminar will provide an excellent opportunity to deliberate on the above issues and will provide an excellent platform for mutual sharing of knowledge, expertise & experience and exchange of ideas amongst academic leaders, researchers, policy makers, financial consultants, investors, infrastructure planners, engineers & consulting organizations, manufacturers, end-users, plant managers and operators and government organizations.

SUB-THEMES:The national conference will deliberate on the following sub themes at 5 different technical sessions.

· Global competitiveness of Indian steel sector · Infrastructure development to meet the challenges of steel sector· Role of Financial& Consulting Organisations in present steel market scenario· Effective utilization of low grade mineral resources· Emerging trends and technological advancement in Iron and Steelmaking area· Manufacturing techniques and advancement in equipment design· Conservation of energy & water by adoption of eco-friendly technologies · Adoption of automation & process control for quality improvement· Research and development trends for production of value added steel products· Construction & project management

The seminar shall be graced by top technocrats from steel fraternity, equipment manufacturers, infrastructure sectors, raw material suppliers, financial institutions,
