LIFE TOGETHER

Dear Friends, Once again I write this while we are staring down two storms that are approaching our Gulf region. I am not sure what will happen, but I do know we join the people of SW Louisiana, E Texas, and the States of Washington, Oregon and California in praying to be spared the destruction of the elements. Our parish relationships with St Pius X Church in Ragley, LA and St Phillip Neri Church in Kinder, LA are allowing us to target specific requests for help in their recovery. Our parish is also working in conjunction with a coordinated Baton Rouge Diocesan effort to assist recovery efforts. You can track that effort at www.ccdiobr.org. I had my first ZOOM Pastoral Council meeting last week. I felt like I was participating in a game show with each person in their own “box.” It went well and I am grateful for the Council’s advice and support. Phase III of the COVID-19 State guidelines does not seem to significantly affect how our parish is operating. Social distancing and masking remains a requirement as does careful sanitization efforts. The October Parish Family Day Picnic and outdoor Mass in will happen, but only with the outdoor Mass. We are still unable to serve food to the public on campus. I have been in touch with Mr. Stephen Binz, nationally known Biblical scholar, who was to give our parish annual November Mission focusing on the Scriptures in Catholic life. His Mission has been postponed until next year when hopefully we can gather more freely in Church. Thank you for welcoming Fr. Arockiam of the Society of the Divine Word for the annual diocesan cooperative Mission Appeal. When we give from our substance and not only from our excess we learn the true meaning of charity. I hope all of us are blessed with God’s providence. Love,

Bulletin Reflection for Sunday

DIRECTION  Isaiah tells us something that we already know, and yet seem to forget every now and then. He tells us, essentially, that God is God and we are not. When we’re confused and troubled and can’t figure every-thing out, it might be wise to recall Isaiah speaking on the Lord’s behalf and explaining that God—who is on a much more, well, Godly wavelength than we are—moves in ways we can’t even imagine.  Saint Paul, by comparison, has everything figured out. Kind of. At least he understands his calling in life—to magnify Christ in everything he does. That should give all of us the direction we need. Jesus gives us direction, too, explaining to us once again in the parable of the workers in the vineyard that the last will be first, and the first, last. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

REMEMBER ST. JEAN VIANNEY PARISH IN YOUR WILL

Please consider remembering St. Jean Vianney Parish in your will. Contact Father Tom for more information. (753.7950)

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The Holy Father explains that The Gospel of Life is at the heart of Jesus’ saving message to the world. Through the Incarnation of Christ, God reveals to us the dignity of all human life. Each of us is made in the image and likeness of God, reflecting his glory and his imprint. We are therefore called to “respect, defend and promote the dignity of every human person, at every moment and in every condition of that person's life.” There are many challenges that expectant mothers may face, including lack of support from the father, financial strains, concerns about her own health or that of her child, and pressures from family and friends. For this reason, it is particularly important that the Church come alongside mothers, offering them encouragement, assistance, and support. In honor of The Gospel of Life’s 25th anniversary the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Pro-Life Activities launched a nationwide effort entitled: “Walking with Moms in Need: A Year of Service.” Parishes are invited to join this effort to increase the Church’s outreach and support to pregnant women facing difficult or challenging pregnancies. Pregnant and parenting moms in need are in our parishes and our neighborhoods, but in desperation, they are turning to other places for help. We know the needs and challenges can be immense for women in difficult pregnancies, especially women in poverty, and the sources for help may not be apparent to those most needing support. Women facing challenging pregnancies should see the Church as a place where they can find help, especially with its extensive social services dedicated to meeting the needs of people in crisis.

THANK YOU, OCP! We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Oregon Catholic Press for awarding St. Jean Vianney a $1000 Parish Grant to help defray the cost of some equipment associated with our new Live Stream ministry, and to replace other outdated sound equipment in the church. St. Jean Vianney was chosen as one of several recipients from among hundreds of applications. The Parish Grant is an annual program from OCP designed to enhance parish liturgies. We sincerely appreciate OCP’s commitment to helping parishes engage, unite, and inspire communities through liturgy and music.

What does it mean to love our neighbors in the midst of such a divisive climate? Catholics are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with anger and harsh language, often directed at people themselves. As Catholics, we must model a better way. We invite you to model love for neighbor by committing to civility, clarity, and compassion this election year. Civilize It: Dignity Beyond the Debate is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even those with whom we disagree, and to put faith in action.

DOING GOOD WORK Last weekend, SJV Parishioner Nathalie Roy was named 2021 Louisiana Teacher of the Year. Nathalie teaches Latin, Classical Mythology, and Roman Technology at Glasgow Middle School. Her Roman Technology class is a full-year STEM-based elective class in which students recreate the products and processes of the ancient Romans using experimental archaeology. With Nathalie's guidance, students have learned to mix Roman concrete, cut mosaic tile, fashioned a 20-foot analemmatic sundial, designed and built their own pottery kilns, aqueducts, and catapults, and cooked ancient Roman bread. This unique curriculum, written and developed by Nathalie, has earned her classes much grant money. Nathalie is a National Board Certified Teacher. She serves our parish by caring for the sacristy linens, and she very much appreciates attending Mass in a building with an "oculus" in its ceiling and very similar to the ancient Roman Pantheon.
