A note from Father Daniel

The life of grace never stops, for our God never ceases to work for our salvation

Through these past few months we have continued to celebrate Mass as usual, we have celebrated an average of 15 confessions each week and have anointed a good number of people.

Last Saturday we were blessed to celebrate a Baptism at Saint Anthony and we will be celebrating one at Holy Cross and one at All Saints in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to the families of these babies and our prayers and support to them always!

On June 17th we began our celebrations of First Reconciliation (originally scheduled in March) with the 15 children that have been preparing throughout the year. We will visit 13 of them at their homes, setting up a mobile social distancing confessional. After a brief catechesis on the Sacrament to refresh their learning, we will celebrate the Sacrament with them and with any other members of their family that might want to go to confession. Two children will come to church July 8 with their families to have their First Reconciliation celebrations.

Once we conclude our First Reconciliation Celebrations we will begin our celebration of First Holy Communion at the Sunday Masses with 2 or three children receiving their First Holy Communion at a time, between July 19 and August 30.

We ask that you please hold these children in prayer as they celebrate these sacraments. They made prayer jars that we will place in the narthex of their church, if you want to write them a little note or share a prayer with them please prepare it at home and bring it to church with you so you can put it in their jars. You can also email Dawn the note (at [email protected]) and she will print it and put it in their jar.

The names of the children celebrating First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion at Holy Cross are: Emma and Liam. The names of the children celebrating First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion at All Saints are: Joaquin, Aniella, Remy, Aoife, Turner, Quinn, Riley, Alia, Cecilia, Bryce, Mark, Autumn, and Owen.

How have you experienced God’s continued work of love and grace in these past 3 months?

What do you remember about your First Communion?

A heart felt thank you to Jeanne Pellerin and Barb Ivers

Since April 1970, when she moved to the area Jeanne Pellerin, has been involved in music ministry at Holy Cross. When we secured the organ from Wells College in the late 90’s Jeanne took advantage of a Diocesan program to learn how to play it. She has been committed to this ministry as our Music Director, Organist, Pianist and Choir Member for 50 years now.

For the last 3 years she has continued this ministry as a volunteer with extreme generosity and a profound sense of service and joy.

She has discerned that, as we will have to restart and rethink so many of our ministries and we seek to find a new normal, this would be a good time for her to step down from her position as Music Director while continuing to be part of the choir and helping us with eventual coverage as an organist and pianist.

I understand her discernment, yet as we all, I too struggle with change and I am feeling this one deeply.

Jeanne has been such a support these past three years and her ministry and presence means so very much to our community!

I look forward to continued collaboration and friendship and in name of many generations at Holy Cross, inspired, uplifted, aided in prayer and healing by her ministry I say: thank you, thank you, thank you!

Since 1975, Barb Ivers has been a part of Holy Cross and among many other roles and ministries she has been our choir director. Again, in these past years, as a volunteer. Barb is an invaluable part of our community at Holy Cross and I am certain will continue to be very present and very influential but she too in conversation with Jeanne has discerned that this would be the right time to let go of her formal role as choir director while continuing to be part of the music ministry without the responsibility of having to select and plan music, etc.

Barb is a pastoral minister through and through. She always finds ways to journey with and accompany those in our community that are facing trials of any kind. I think the music ministry has been one of those ways to bring joy, solace, peace and comfort to all of us in our varied journeys.

She has been very helpful to me personally as I continue to try to figure our this gift of being a priest and this adventure of being a pastor.

In my name and the name of many generations she has cared for at Holy Cross thorough different ministries including the Music Ministry I say: Thank you, thank you, Thank you!

And I certainly look forward to continued collaboration and friendship as we all try to serve our community and the Mission of Jesus Christ.

There are no plans at this point and I will communicate with you when we have them.

So many things seem to be in flux, yet we know that our God never ceases to work for our salvation, so we stand firm in God’s love and embrace these changes and transitions with hope of the blessings to come and gratitude for the blessings past.

A.M.D.G.,

Father Daniel

Mass intentions

We are now taking Mass intentions for July and August through Labor Day. To schedule your intentions please call the office at (607) 241-0821, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 9 am — 4 pm. Donations for Mass intentions may be mailed to the Parish or made online.

Or you may also put your donations in the Sacrificial Offering Station when you come to church.

Please do not leave any money, checks or envelopes anywhere else in the church; place them in the Sacrificial Offering Station. We do not take responsibility for any donations left anywhere else on campus; you should assume they will be stolen since our churches are almost always open.

Sign up for In-person Attendance at Mass

We have scheduled enough Masses both during the week and during the weekend so that everyone can attend Mass every time they’d like, even with our limited social distancing capacity. To attend Mass in person, please sign up online. The sign up is posted on our website, and the link is sent in our weekly Parish email, and posted daily on our Facebook. You can also sign up by calling the office at (607) 241-0821, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 9 am — 4 pm. Signing up is necessary to ensure that we do not have more people show up for any given Mass than the number we can actually accommodate. It is also necessary in case at any point contact tracing becomes necessary.

Reopening of Parish Offices

Even though we are making steady progress towards relocating our offices to ensure that social distancing can be maintained (setting up internet connections, moving furniture, moving files, etc.), we will not be ready to reopen until the following dates:

Tuesday, July 7 at Saint Anthony — Wednesday, July 8 at Holy Cross — Thursday, July 9 at All Saints.

In the meantime, for anything you need from the office, feel free to call (607) 241-0821 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 9am — 4 pm.

Science, Common Sense, and the Sacred

This summer is a great time to learn and we have just the opportunity for you. Jonathan Lunine, Chair of the Astronomy Department at Cornell, vice-president of the Society of Catholic Scientists, and a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Ithaca will conduct a two-week short course titled “Science, Common Sense, and the Sacred: Understanding the Relationship of Science and Faith ” on July 13-16 and July 20-23. This online course will challenge prevailing misconceptions about the relationship of science and religious faith.

Science and faith are increasingly presented as an either/or choice, but they are not. In many ways, religion established a worldview that enabled modern science as we know it to exist. And, far from being an enemy of science, the Vatican supports science through the work of religious orders that run universities and are directly involved in scientific research. The course will have eight one-hour online (Zoom) sessions running Monday through Thursday beginning July 13 from 7-8 p.m. Each session will be self-contained, with time for questions in each session. You can join for one or all sessions, as time permits. This program is intended for Catholics from high school upward who want a deeper understanding of the relationship between science and our faith, or who want to be more effective communicators on this topic. No experience with science or theology beyond the basic tenets of our faith is required. A reservation is needed so that you can receive a Zoom invitation. To make a reservation, e-mail Ann Marie Eckert at [email protected] before July 10.

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy

Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Please join the Pope in praying for the following intention during the month of June 2020:

The Way of the Heart – We pray that all those who suffer may find their way in life, allowing themselves to be touched by the Heart of Jesus.
