The Mass as the Bridge between the First and Second “Comings” of Christ

Part III Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The entrance antiphon of this Sunday’s Mass is Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near (Phil 4:4-5). Every day the Lord is coming closer to us. Of course, we look for-ward to Christmas, but this holiday is nevertheless another reminder of the Lord’s final coming. Last Sun-day, we heard about St. John the Baptist preparing the way of the Lord. Likewise, the beginning of the Mass is preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. The hearing of the Word — the set of Biblical readings — prepares us for the receiving of the Word in Holy Communion. The “Liturgy of the Word” is composed of an Old Testament reading (during the Easter Season it is a reading from the Acts of the Apostles), Psalm, and New Testament epistle. During this time, we are seated as a sign of meditation and recollection (not a time to dose off!). There is usually a pause be-tween the end of the “Collect” (opening prayer) and the reader walking to the ambo. This is a good op-portunity to ask the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart. The readers are trained, not just to read, but to proclaim the readings. It is good to sit with your eyes closed, or if your mind wanders, to follow along in your missalette or Daily Roman Missal. Each reading ends with, “The word of the Lord,” and the re-sponse is, “Thanks be to God.” The OT reading is usually linked closely with the gospel, and the NT reading is often an exhortation to virtue. The psalms were written to be chanted, and so we sing them on Sundays when possible. At the Alleluia, we stand as a sign of respect. We are about to hear the words and works of Jesus our Lord. Alleluia is a Hebrew word which really has no translation; it is simply a mystical glory-giving ovation to God. If a deacon is present, he asks for the priest’s blessing to be able to read the gospel to the assembly. The Book of the Gospels is processed to the ambo. The priest or deacon says, “The Lord be with you,” and the response is, “And with your spirit”; “A reading from the holy gospel according to. . .”; “Glory to you, O Lord.” When incense is used, the priest or deacon incenses the book because of the dignity of the sacred text. It is very important that we realize these words are addressed directly to us — so pay attention! After the gospel passage is complete, the priest or deacon says, “The gospel of the Lord,” to which you respond “Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.” Then you are seated. It is now time for the homily. It is important to remember that the priest’s job is not to entertain you. The homily is not about tell-ing jokes or making you laugh. It is the priest’s opportunity to help you better understand the word so that it can be lived out in your life. It may not always be what you want to hear, but sometimes it is what you need to hear. According to St. Augustine, the priest should (1) instruct, (2) exhort, and (3) inspire. After the homily, there is a bit of time for silent reflection. We then stand to profess our faith in the Nicene Creed. It reminds us Catholic Christians what we believe so that we never forget. Many of the martyrs in the history of the Faith died for this Creed. After the Creed, petitions are presented to God, which is part of the intercessory dimension of the Mass. Then we sit once again for the offertory. Our sacrifice in the collection plate is a sign of our gratitude for God’s blessings, but also a sign that our sacrifice is mingled with Christ’s at the altar. Next Sunday, I will conclude this series on how we continue to stay focused through the rest of Mass so that we will long for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; and that when we receive Him in Holy Communion, our hearts may rejoice.

Parte III

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, La antífona de entrada de la Misa de hoy, es estén siempre alegres en el Señor; les repito, estén ale-gres. El Señor está cerca (Filipenses 4:4-5). Cada día el Señor se acerca más a nosotros. Por supuesto, esperamos la Navidad, pero esta festividad es solo otro recordatorio de la venida final del Señor. El domin-go pasado, escuchamos sobre San Juan Bautista preparando el camino del Señor. Prediqué acerca de có-mo el comienzo de la Misa nos prepara para recibir a Jesucristo en la Eucaristía. Escuchar la Palabra – el conjunto de lecturas bíblicas-nos preparan para recibir la Palabra y la Comunión. La “Liturgia de la Palabra” esta compuesta de una lectura del Antiguo Testamento (en la época de Pas-cua, de una lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles), Salmos, y epístolas del Nuevo Testamento. Durante este tiempo, nos sentamos como señal de meditación y recogimiento (no para descansar o tomar una sies-ta). Hay usualmente una pausa entre el final de la “Colecta” (una oración) y el lector se dirige al ambón. Es una buena oportunidad para pedirle al Espíritu Santo que hable a tu corazón. Los lectores están entrenados no solamente para leer sino para proclamar las lecturas. (Mis homilías duran-te Adviento han sido más para “instruir” porque quiero que ustedes ¡“obtengan más fruto” de la Misa!). Des-pués de la homilía, hay un ratito para reflexionar en silencio. Nosotros entonces nos ponemos de pie para la profesión de fe el Credo de Nicea. Es un recordatorio de lo que creemos como Católicos Cristianos para que no lo olvidemos. Muchos de los mártires en la historia de nuestra fe murieron por este Credo. Después del Credo, se presentan nuestras peticiones a Dios, que son parte del poder de intercesión de la Misa. Y luego nos sentamos para el ofertorio. Nuestro sacrificio en el plato de colecta es un signo de nuestra grati-tud por las bendiciones de Dios, pero también un signo de nuestro sacrificio es mezclado con Cristo en el altar.
