“Abortion and racism are both symptoms of a fundamental human error. The error is thinking that when someone stands in the way of our wants, we can justify getting that person out of our lives. Abortion and racism stem from the same poisonous root, selfishness.” —Alveda King

Have you ever found yourself walking through the aisles of a store and spotting someone you really didn’t want to see or talk to? Did you go the other way or did you acknowledge them as you passed them in the aisle? I wonder if the woman in our

Gospel today was tempted to turn around and come back later, hoping this strange man would be gone. Noon was not a common time for getting water at the well and thus the woman in the Gospel knew she could get what she needed without having to encounter certain people from the town. How confused she must have been when Jesus began to not only talk with her, but to ask her for a drink!

We realize that the importance of this story is not just what happened 2,000 years ago, but a reminder for each one of us here and now. If we are honest are we avoiding Christ in our life by not slowing down and taking time for prayer and a true encounter with him? Christ desires to encounter us in such a way that we are set free, but for this to happen we have to be willing to take an honest look at our own lives and see where we are in need of God’s mercy. There was something about the way Christ looked at this woman that she was set free from the unhealthy sense of shame that she had felt and which prompted her to avoid people in the town. This same sense of shame can impact our lives as well and keep us from receiving His mercy.

Stations of the Cross is a wonderful devotional done during the Lenten Season. We pray them on Mondays with our School children at 8:15am and on Friday evenings as a parish at 5:30pm. You can also stop in and pray them on your own throughout the week.
