Invitation to Study the Mass in Light of Scripture
The Scripture Study Group will be starting a new segment all about the Mass, beginning Monday, April 9 and con-tinuing weekly on [April 9, (no 16th) 23, 30, May 7, 14] after the 9:00AM Mass, meeting in Manion Hall. The alternate meeting day/dates will commence on the Thurs-day, April 12, continuing weekly for five weeks [Apr 12, 19, 26, May 3, 10]. The course will take place in the McGann Conference room convening at 7:00–8:30PM.
As Catholics, the Mass is the center of our Faith. We cele-brate it every day. We know all the responses. We know all the gestures. But do we know what it all means? In A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, Dr. Edward Sri takes us on a unique tour of the liturgy. Based on the revised trans-lation of the Mass, this book explores the biblical roots of the words and gestures we experience in the liturgy and explains their profound significance. Please join your fel-low parishioners in participating in this timely series. No prior experience is necessary.
Cost is $25 for lesson materials and contribution toward the DVD set. Please notify Laura MacMullin or Joanne Boag, parish secretaries, of your interest in the program at [email protected]. You may also “walk-in” on the first day of either class and register/pay on that day.

Bulletin Cover Art
Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) The Emmaus Disci-ples, 1622, Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp, Bel-gium
Abraham Bloemaert, himself a devout Catholic, set up shop in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1593, remaining there until his death. He was part of a group of artists known as the ‘Dutch mannerists’ who were influenced in partic-ular by Caravaggio, in terms of both of subject and style. Bloemaert combines the key features of this style in The Emmaus Disciples, a painting that forms a high point in his own career. The large, half length figures, the indi-vidualized figures portrayed with a strong sense of emo-tionality and in particular the use of chiaroscuro, with strong light-dark effects and sharp shadows are typical of this style.
The tableau presents the biblical scene in which Jesus - in a gesture that refers back to the Last Supper - breaks bread and in so doing so, confirms his resurrection from the dead to two of his disciples who had not recognized him until then (Luke 24: 35). Two figures in the back-ground represent the same two disciples, despairingly consulting with each other on the road to the village of Emmaus, before meeting the "stranger" who was to open their eyes for good. The visible, emotional reactions which the revelation causes to the protagonists, are seemingly, totally lost on a fourth individual, a turbaned server. In terms of content and form, this painting repre-sents "a light shining in the darkness".

Michael J. Cunningham is
Director of Teen and Adult Faith Formation
for St. Eulalia Parish.
The Unbroken Word This week, we held a briefing meeting with the confirmation candidates of the parish for 2018, and their parents. It
was great to see those who have supported their children through these years now seeing them making their affirma-
tion of faith through the receipt of the sacrament.
I was confirmed myself at a younger age, way back in the Stone Age, and as a result, I did not have the same maturity
our young folks have on the subject. Certainly, I did not have the preparation that they have encountered, or the bene-
fit of the team leaders and catechists of this beautiful parish. Perhaps one of the most useful aspects of this journey is
the discussions about their faith, how it applies in the world and how God is with us all the time; even when it is less
noticeable than we might like.
In preparation for the meeting, I happened to be reading a book on Jon Duns Scotus, a Franciscan priest from the
1300s; an obvious source of wisdom for our teens! Scotus had a lot to say about how we should not concentrate on
just one aspect of our faith to the detriment of other areas. He believed creation, the incarnation and salvation history
were equally important to consider, a trinity of riches, if you like, to complement the mystery of the Holy Trinity.
So, in looking for a way to try and integrate the discussions and teachings of the past two years, a wind chime became
an unlikely foil. Using Scotus as a guide, we can look at our whole Christian spirituality as that of a wind chime. A
wind chime? Yes!
If we consider the cord which runs through the center of the chime as our freedom, our free will allowing us to be-
have pleasingly to God, or not as the case may be, it is there in all of us. This freedom, a combination of our intellect
and will, drives the decisions and direction we take in life. The center disk of the chime represents God’s love. This
element (love) is what causes all the other elements of the chime to connect, and is permanently connected to our
freedom, and thereby to God. God’s love is a permanent connection, whether we realize it or not.
So when these two elements move, they make the tubes and other parts of the chime sound off. These can be virtues,
gifts, our charisma, character and moral values, remembering only the good in our spirit is driven by love, and there-
by God.
At the meeting, we described how the wind chime represents our Christianity in the world, and showed (by Claire
Aalerud’s dexterous use of a fan) how the Holy Spirit moves us and the wind chime to make the sound of a Christian
in action.
We sometimes need the help of the Holy Spirit when we cannot make the sound of a Christian in our world, perhaps
we do not have the courage or the humility to
speak up when we should, or we are a little less
patient than others deserve. Regardless, we can
all use the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the beati-
tudes, and God’s love to help move us closer to
Him.
The wind chime in question will be placed in
the Prayer Garden at the rear of the parish cen-
ter. Next time you walk by, perhaps it will re-
mind you of God’s action and love in your life.
