First Sunday of Advent December 3rd, 2017

PARISH NEWS Dear Parishioners and Friends, This Sunday marks the beginning of Advent, when we gather as a parish family to begin the new Liturgical Year. Advent literally means coming. This coming of Christ has a two-fold character, as a time of preparation for the celebration of Christmas, when we recall Jesus’ birth, and as a time of preparation for His Second Coming at the end of time. Spiritually each of us is asked to resist the worldly temptation of entering into Christmas without a sufficient time to reflect on how Christ comes each day into our own lives and how we, with God’s grace, manifest Him to the world. I pray we do not neglect this opportunity to live these next few weeks as a challenge of preparation, reflection, and God-willing, of a deeper life in Christ. The Liturgy is here to guide our thoughts and prayers during this time. During the first part of Advent the readings and prayers speak of Christ’s Second Coming…at the end of our lives and hopefully during our lives, we are to live Christ’s victory and we are to reflect on how we do or don’t continually draw on Christ’s power and victory to transforms us. During the second part of Advent, from December 17th onward, the readings and prayers speak of Christ’s humble birth…how does that humility and coming to and for all inform our own faith? I would encourage each of us to make this Advent a time rich with worship, prayer, and action. From our Sunday and daily worship to the wonderful outreach of JoyJ, the Soup Kitchen, the Food Pantry, the Coat Drive, the Advent Simple Suppers, there is something going on here for each of us to help live more fully the coming of Christ. Thank you to all the employees and volunteers who make these things happen, and a special thank you to all of our music ministers who seek to enrich our worship. Since last week’s bulletins were unfortunately lost in the mail, I would just like to thank publically those who participated in our Thanksgiving Day Mass and who helped stock our food pantry. Also thanks to the Stephen Gaynor school for bringing many bags of food to the pantry, and to our very own Blessed Sacrament Alumnus, Dylan Alexander, who now attends Xavier High School, and who coordinated an initiative through YouGiveGoods, that saw over 700 lbs. of food delivered to the pantry. The Pope is looking for input from young women and men 16-29 years of age in preparation for the Synod on Youth that will be held in the Vatican next year. I urge and even implore you to share your thoughts. https://survey-synod2018.glauco.it/limesurvey/index.php/147718. It’s an online survey, so you will have no problem…it’s in every language imaginable. What becomes important is that your ideas touch the life of the Church. Also, I would love to know what you think Blessed Sacrament should be doing for people your age. You can email me at [email protected].

Thank you to the member of the Finance Council, who, this weekend, are delivering the Annual Report to the parish, and thanks to each of you who support the parish through your weekly giving as well as your support to the other parish giving initiatives. As always let us continue to pray and work for peace. Father Duffell ALL ARE WELCOME! FREE COMPLETE SCREENING OF CLASSIC DEKALOG FILM SERIES This acclaimed film series raises the great moral questions embedded in real life, often lived out in difficult circumstances. In his ten hour-long films, the late and legendary director and co-writer Krzysztof Kieslowski explores the theme and challenge of each Commandment through characters living in a typical Soviet-era housing complex.

Come join us December 6th from 7:30pm – 9:00pm for this thought provoking series and for a discussion after each film.

First Sunday of Advent December 3rd, 2017
