The Red Stocking
Many years ago, Holy Martyrs Ministry
of Assistance began putting out the Red
Stocking to rally parishioners around the
cause of raising funds to help the poor
during the long winter months ahead.
Today, it has become a beacon of hope
for the many that depend on Holy Mar-
tyrs’ assistance to feed their families and pay for bills
that are crucial for getting by each day.
Christ tells us that the poor will always be with us and it
is how we respond to the poor that makes us true Chris-
tians. Giving to those in need is central to the Christian
way of life. Our Red Stocking collection at Christmas is
THE major way that we help those who are in need in
our area; one-quarter of the funds raised by Holy Mar-
tyrs Ministry of Assistance each year comes from this
collection. We rely on your generosity! With your gener-
ous donations, we are able to help not only parishioners
but others in the Medina County area who struggle just
to make ends meet. You can make a difference in the
lives of people who have few places to turn.
The Red Stocking will be available in the Gathering Area
at all Masses in the weeks leading up to
Christmas. Please be generous so we can continue
Christ’s work of reaching out to those in need.
Pastor’s Notes
May the peace of Christ be in your heart and in your
home this Christmas.
Mary and Joseph journeyed to Bethlehem so God’s son
could enter the world. Today we, too, share the journey
of Christmas. In our Christmas liturgies we celebrate the
great outpouring of God’s grace. In receiving the
Eucharist we encounter the Lord who came to us.
Jesus again enters our hearts.
Come, share this gift. Join us for our beautiful Christmas
liturgies. Hear our wonderful choir. Be inspired by the
story of Christ’s coming. Join in singing the great hymns
of this season.
Please invite family members and friends to join you and
the whole family of Holy Martyrs. Experience the Good
news of great joy that the angels proclaimed. In the
words of the great Christmas hymn, “Come, let us adore
Him.”
Father Steve Dohner and the Staff of Holy Martyrs
Thank You for Your Generosity. Each Christmas, the
people of Holy Martyrs show their generosity in many
ways. In addition to the regular Sunday collections that
fund our parish activities, facilities and staff, the Christ-
mas collections allow us to provide for special needs at
our parish through out the year. This year, Christmas
falls on a Sunday. Please remember both our normal and
extraordinary needs in planning your giving.
Thank you!
In the Hospital?
One of the important ministries at Holy Martyrs is
visiting the sick. Staff members visit parishioners not
only at Medina Hospital but at hospitals throughout the
Greater Cleveland and Akron area.
We are eager to visit with our parishioners who are
hospitalized and make every effort to do so. Because
many hospital stays are short and privacy rules prevent
hospitals from informing churches when parishioners are
there, it is important that a family member let the parish
office know immediately when someone is going to be
hospitalized.
The question sometimes comes up about why some
parishes bring Communion to the hospitalized and other
parishes do not. The answer is in church law. To ensure
that Catholics receive pastoral care wherever they are,
Canon Law requires that a parish with a hospital or
nursing home within its boundaries is responsible for the
pastoral care of Catholics in those institutions.
They are responsible, for instance, for bringing Holy
Communion and providing the other sacraments there.
It is one of the main reasons more priests are assigned
to those parishes than to Holy Martyrs.
We are grateful for the help those parishes provide. We
still want very much to provide pastoral care and share
the sacraments with our own parishioners regardless of
where they are at. Your help in letting us know when a
loved one is hospitalized or in nursing care will help us
do this.

WINTER SMALL GROUPS OPPORTUNITY
Holy Martyrs Small Groups have had a fruitful start with
our 6-week Fall Series on Prayer. Following a 2-week
Christmas break, groups will resume in January for a
NEW 6-week series. We are able to welcome new
members to existing groups on a space-available basis.
Please contact [email protected] if you would
like to join a group beginning in January. Most groups
meet weekly for 90 minutes in homes, while a few meet
at Holy Martyrs.
The American Red Cross is facing a looming shortage
of the most needed blood types and, therefore, has an
urgent need for eligible donors with O negative,
B negative and A negative blood to give now to prevent
an emergency situation. There will be an American Red
Cross Blood Drive at Holy Martyrs on Friday, December
16, 2016 from 3:00-7:00 pm in Martyrs Hall.
Park in the rear lot.
Please give the gift of life.
Aging religious need your help.
Senior Catholic sisters, and religious
order priests have offered their lives
in service to others—educating the
young, comforting the sick, seeking
justice for the oppressed. Today,
many are frail, elderly, and in need of assistance. Your
gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to fur-
nish medications, nursing care, and other necessities.
Please give generously to today’s second collection. A very generous and awe inspiring
response from our parishioners this
year allowed Holy Martyrs Ministry
of Assistance to triple the number
of turkeys we provided to St. Au-
gustine’s Hunger Center. We want to
extend a heartfelt thank you to all
the parishioners, and students, parents, teachers, and
staff involved in PSR classes for their tremendous effort
in providing food. The donations from PSR classes also
went to the St. Augustine Hunger Center in Cleveland, via
the Turkey Run, which provides for the needy throughout
the city. The Ministry of Assistance is very grateful for all
the hard work by those involved in PSR, helping us pro-
vide for the hungry throughout Medina County and the
City of Cleveland. Without the generosity of all who are
involved in PSR we would not be able to provide as much
for so many.

Spiritual Multilingualism Part I
When do we teach our children that not everyone belongs to the same church or practices the same faith
that we do? According to Dr. Lisa Miller, author of The Spiritual Child, “… it is IMPERATIVE that our children
learn from an early age to appreciate the religions of other families and peoples.” Before kindergarten, and
certainly by elementary school, kids are hungry to learn about spiritual expression. They see a house of
worship, and they want to go inside. They are ready to understand other faiths, traditions, and cultures.
This is called spiritual multilingualism.
Children need to understand that diverse spiritual traditions share common themes and have parallel
ideas, ceremonies, and observances. No matter what we may think about other religions, we want to be
sure that our children are open to the spiritual presence of all people and are respectful of their beliefs,
especially in our global world.
