THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT | DECEMBER 16, 2018

Prelude (10:30 a.m.) “Traditional Carols” Coppertone Ringers, directed by Elizabeth Reed

Welcome to The Peoples Church! Rev. Case Van Kempen Worship is both personal and communal, formal and informal, intimate and casual. Here at The Peoples Church, we recognize that people come to worship God in both joy and pain, faith and doubt, with laughter and with tears. Our worship tries to reflect a desire both for meditation and celebration. Please know you are invited to participate in any and all ways you feel led. Our songs, prayers, words and actions are the works of imperfect people trying to worship a perfect God.

Call to Worship

Leader: We come from a world of darkness. People: Into Christ’s world of light. Leader: We come from a world of weariness. People: Into God’s strength and hope! Leader: We come from a slumbering world. People: Strengthened by the Spirit, we come to awaken our souls and watch for the coming of Christ. Lighting of the Advent Candle

Gathering Hymn "Angels, from the Realms of Glory" No. 143

Procession of the Light of Christ Kaitlyn Gronowski and Brenden Wells, Acolytes

Call to Confession, Prayer of Confession Rev. Drew Filkins Leader: We can no longer play dumb. We not only know the lives we are called to lead, we are well aware of how we fail - through our words as well as our silence, by our deeds and our unwillingness to act. Let us confess to the God who comes to us. All: Gracious God: In sending Christ, you have broken forever the silence of creation, and begun with us a conversation which must lead into deep friendship; but we break off communication with our fellows when we please, and must confess that we have, seemingly, preferred the silence which breeds misunderstanding. In Christ you have ended all ambiguity, but we are so glib; we try, by our eloquence, to bring together what is false and what is true, and make our words tell half-truths and lies. In Christ, you speak a word which reconciles, and builds up; but we use words to hurt and destroy. God, we thank you for sending us the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ, to speak to us with care and at great cost. Teach us how to speak to one another in truth, and not to put our words to waste; in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon Leader: At the beginning, at the end, and in every time between, the good news speaks to us of God's tender mercy and love for us. All: God comes! Not to punish, but to gift us with peace, not to judge, but to save us. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Congregational Response “Then Cleansed Be Every Life from Sin" (On Jordan's Bank) No. 96Then cleansed be every life from sin; make straight the way for God within;

And let us all our hearts prepare for Christ to come and enter there.

Moment of Gratitude for Julie Bills Rev. Drew Filkins

Prayers of the People (During the pastoral prayer there will be a time to offer prayers of joy and concern, voiced aloud or silently for and on behalf of others.)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into tempta- tion, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
