Answering the Call Alice Camille, Exploring the Sunday Readings, January 2018

First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Set out for Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you.

Imagine picking up your ringing cell phone and seeing an incoming call from God. What’s your impulse: to take the call, or let it go to voice mail? The answer probably depends on what’s going on in your life right now. If you’re in the process of pulling a bank heist, you’re less likely to take that call.

The prophet Jonah took the call, mostly because he had no choice. But once he found out what God was a er, Jonah sought every possible way out of the collabora on. God wanted Jonah to preach a message of repentance to NINEVEH, of all places! That city was the capital of hated Assyria, the worst enemy in the history of Israel. If Jonah

preached to the Ninevites, and they repented, that meant God would spare them. Jonah didn’t want Nineveh saved. He’d much rather see it torched. What if God is calling us today to rescue our enemies? What if God desires their welfare as much as God desires ours? It’s a dilemma true believers must face.

Q. Have you ever returned kindness for an offense? What happened?

Gospel: Mark 1:14-20 Then they abandoned their nets and followed Jesus.

Every contact we have with another person is an invita on. A coworker pops into the room and says: “Do you have a minute?” someone arrives on the doorstep wan ng you to take part in a survey. A friend texts you with an offer of

ckets for a movie tonight. An email ini ates a conversa on with a long-lost acquaintance. Maybe a stranger speaks to you on the train. In all of these overtures, a choice needs to be made. Are we available to this rela onship, or not?

When Jesus walks along the shore of the Galilee, he finds what one would expect to see: fishermen plying their trade. Jesus issues an invita on that goes much deeper than the average one. It’s not “Got a minute?” but more like “What are you doing with the rest of your life?” Four men that day made an astonishing reply: “We’re not doing anything that we wouldn’t trade for the grand adventure of life with you.” How many other people received the invita on to follow, and how many replied: “No thanks”?

Q. Imagine Jesus walking into the place where you are and invi ng you to follow. What might you cheerfully abandon, and what would hold you back?

ORDINARY TIME

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY JANUARY 18–25, 2018

Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power (Exodus 15:6) Reflec on by Alice Camille, Exploring the Sunday Readings, January 2018 The annual Week of Prayer for Chris an Unity began on Thursday and runs through next Thursday. Some of us are old enough to remember when Catholics and Protestants were not friendly. In fact, non-Catholic Chris ans were considered enemies of the Church for nearly four hundred years. And the feeling was mutual

on the side of the Reformed tradi on. Then along came Pope John XXIII, who invented a new term for these “enemies”: that is, “our separated brethren.” What’s in a name? The possibility of reconcilia on, for one thing. Brothers and sisters may forgive each other, but enemies rarely do.

Early Chris ans like St. Paul suspected that me was running out on crea on, and the end

of the world was nigh. In fact, that’s not wrong: the world as we know it is constantly ending. Some ideas, prac ces, a tudes, and goals need to pass away. Viewing fellow Chris ans as

opponents or compe tors rather than allies is an idea we can cheerfully do without.

Q. How do you par cipate in the unity of all Chris ans?

Monthly Collection of Personal Hygiene Items

The Story of Jonah The first reading this Sunday is taken from the Book of Jonah. Here is a short play that tells us about Jonah and the whale and the people of Nineveh. It is found at The Kids’ Corner, www.kidscorner.net. The main characters are a narrator, God, and Jonah. You can add other characters, such as sailors, the whale, and the people of Nineveh.

Narrator: Has God ever asked you to do something that you just didn't want to do? Jonah had that happen to him. Here is his story.

God: Jonah, I have a mission for you. Go to the great city of Nineveh and tell the people who live there that their sins have come to my a en on.

Jonah: Me? Go to Nineveh? I don't want to go to Nineveh.

God: Jonah, go to Nineveh.

Jonah: Maybe I will run away. I will get on a ship and sail somewhere else — anywhere but Nineveh.

Narrator: Jonah falls into a deep sleep aboard the ship when suddenly a storm arose.

Sailors: We're afraid the ship will break apart in this wind. The captain sent us to ask you to pray to your God to help us. We think this storm is your fault! What terrible thing have you done to bring all this trouble on us poor sailors? Tell us.

Jonah: I am a Hebrew. I worship the Lord, but I am running away from Him and what He wants me to do.

Sailors: What should we do? We've already thrown all the cargo off the ship and it hasn't helped. We don't want to die.

Jonah: Pick me up and throw me into the sea.

Narrator: The sailors threw Jonah overboard and a large fish swallowed him up. While Jonah was in the belly of the fish, he prayed to God.

Jonah: Lord, my God, when I almost drowned, I called for help. And You listened to my cry. I will sing a song of thanks. I will do what I have promised. Lord, You are the one who saves.

Narrator: God hears the prayer of Jonah and causes the fish to spit Jonah out on the shore. Then Jonah keeps his promise to God and goes to Nineveh.

Jonah: People of Nineveh, I have a message for you from God. In 40 days, Nineveh will be destroyed because of your sins.

People of Nineveh: Oh, no! We need to repent for our sins. We will wear black clothes and we won't eat to show God how sorry we are. Please, Lord God, turn away your anger.

God: I will have compassion on you, and I will not destroy you.

If you want to read the story for yourself, I recommend this book, especially for its illustra ons.

The Book of Jonah by Peter Spier (Doubleday, 2015)Two- me Caldeco illustrator Peter Spier’s visual retelling of a favorite Bible story is back in print! In a tale full of ac on, adventure, and strife, Jonah is asked by God to tell the people of Nineveh to mend their wicked ways. Fleeing from this enormous task, Jonah sets sail and is thrown overboard and swallowed by a great fish. What follows is Jonah’s journey to acceptance of God’s love and grace.

A reference sec on at the end of the book shares historical and geographical notes about the story, including details about the ship Jonah might have sailed on and a

fascina ng discussion of the ancient city of Nineveh and the loca on of its ruins in present-day Iraq. The OLMC Parish Library has a copy of this book.
