As summer starts to wind down here inthe Inland Northwest our beautifulw e a t h e r , m i d - 8 0 ' s w i t h 2 0 %

humidity, will be turning towards autumnsooner than we wish. One of my highlightsthis summer was attending the NASPDconference in Montreal, Canada, on June 20-22nd. We had an awesome slate of speakersthat brought diversity along with somefamiliar presenters. If you were not able toattend, please check out the NASPD websiteand click on Summer Conference 2019. Thereyou will also find the video clip of our 15thanniversary tribute to Gail Belcik.

We now are looking forward to the FallConference which will be held in Scottsdale,Arizona, on October 17-19th. Our ExecutiveDirector, Susannah Porr, has listed thehighlights of the conference in her article. Wehope to see everyone then.

I have been asked to give an update on the“Legends of the Steel Pipe Business” projectthat I have been working on for just over oneyear. To recap, I am traveling around thecountry doing video interviews of some of the

legends of our business to chronicle andarchive some our history, in their own words.

To date, I have interviewed 16 people with 8 ofthem being past presidents of the NASPD.The interviews started in the Los Angeles areawith Bobby Jacobson, our 5th president, EarleCohen, our 1st president, and Fidel Nabor. Ithen traveled to Oklahoma City to interviewBen Shanker, NASPD's 4th president, RobertBrinkley, Steven Rosen and Al Karchmer, 98years young, and still selling pipe daily. At theNew Orleans Convention, I interviewed JoeBergfeld, our 9th president, and CharleyJewett, our 11th NASPD president. In May, Itraveled to St. Louis to interview RobertGriggs, our 26th president, Jim Barnes, 84years young and selling pipe daily, ScottBarnes, Paul Everett and Greg Semmel, our27th president. At the Montreal SummerConference, I had the pleasure of interviewingthe NASPD's 12th president, Mr. Steve

to work in the mill, growing its Blythevilleworkforce to approximately 150 employees.Startup of the new mill is scheduled forSeptember 2021.

“Arkansas has some of the most talentedand dedicated steel workers in thecountry,” said Gov. Asa Hutchinson. “Ourquality workforce and low business costsmake Arkansas stand out among otherstates as an attractive option for companieslooking to expand.”

“We’re very excited to continue investingin a community we’ve proudly calledhome,” said Barry Zekelman, executivechairman and CEO of Zekelman Industries.“Having two mills within close proximityof each other will only increase ourorganization’s efficiency. We look forwardt o s t a r t i n g c o n s t r u c t i o n o f t h i sgroundbreaking facility.”

The $150 million mill project represents thelargest private investment in the U.S. steelindustry in the last decade, enabling newdomestic manufacturing capabilities. Thestate-of-the-art facility will be capable ofproducing hollow structural sections(HSS) in square, rectangular and roundshapes and in sizes ranging from 8” square x0.750” wall to 22” square x 1” wall. WhileAtlas Tube has supplied Jumbo HSS (up to22” square x 0.875” wall) since 2012, thenew mill allows the full range of theseproducts to be made in the USA for the firsttime — and with a larger maximum wallthickness than previously available. Thelargest rectangular section produced herewill be 30” x 14” x 1” wall, and the largestround section will be 28” OD x 1” wall.

Atlas Tube provides structural support forbuildings such as airports, stadiums, megawarehouses and large distribution centers,as well as infrastructure applications suchas bridges and oil & gas pipelines. TheBlytheville mill will produce HSS and pipepiling to meet or exceed ASTM A500,ASTM A1085, CSA G40 and ASTM A252standards.

“It is a great testament to our state whencompanies like Atlas Tube expand theiroperat ions here rather than goingelsewhere,” said Secretary of CommerceMike Preston. “We have put a lot of effortinto growing the steel industry in the state, and this is the latest company to realize thatArkansas has the tools in place to helpbusinesses succeed.”

“We greatly appreciate the support we’vereceived from the Arkansas EconomicDevelopment Commission over the years,”said Tom Muth, president of Atlas Tube.“The AEDC has worked closely with us toensure immense success for the Blythevillecommunity, and we’re proud to be a part ofit.”

The new Blytheville mill will be AtlasTube’s sixth mill in North America and itsfifth in the United States, all of which alsoproduce HSS.

| INSIDE YOUR NASPD

A LOOK INSIDE THE NASPDMEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

8 Pipeline

by Clint Koshnick, Kingwood Pipe

Before joining the Membership Committee, I had never put muchthought into how companies knew about the NASPD and the benefitsof joining the association.

When I first joined the Membership Committee, I had no idea what allwas involved. I thought I was expected to cold call prospectivemembers, and seeing as I spend my days calling on prospective clients, Iwas not exactly excited about the idea of volunteering to add more coldcalling to my days. I quickly learned that it was more than that.

“I feel the Membership Committee plays an integral role in the vitalityand longevity of the NASPD,” said Larry Trefry, Challenger Pipe &Steel. “Recruiting new members and retaining existing members is vitalto the long-term success of our organization.” He also adds that, “as amember of the Membership Committee I am better able to stay on top ofchanges in the industry in general, and I have the opportunity to interactwith companies that I otherwise would not through the recruitingprocess.”

The Membership Committee is made up of 22 members that take timeout of their busy schedules to contact prospective members and informthem of the benefits of becoming a member of the NASPD. Committeemembers reach out to steel pipe distribution companies as well ascompanies that are affiliated with those companies – i.e. pipe mills, trucking companies, pipe coating companies, etc. They then go over thebenefits the NASPD can provide to these companies, which includeeverything from networking events to educational classes to companyexposure, just to name a few.

To qualify for Regular or Associate membership of the NASPD, acompany shall be a business enterprise that has been in the steel pipeand tubular products distribution industry or related businesses for aperiod of at least three years before submitting an application. Thecompany must have three sponsorship letters from existing members ofthe NASPD. Once the application is submitted and reviewed by theMembership Committee, prospective members are then voted on by theBoard of Directors at the next meeting.

There are three classes of membership: Regular, Associate, andProfessional Affiliate members.

Regular members include business enterprises whose principal steelpipe or other tubular steel products distribution business is located inNorth America. In addition, these members must maintain a minimuminventory level and 1/3 of its revenue from steel pipe or other tubulargoods.

Associate members include the following enterprises:

a - Business enterprise that are engaged in the manufacturing of steel, steel pipe or other tubular products.

b - Business enterprises that manufactures or sells steel pipe relatedgoods or equipment.

c - Business enterprises that provide and sell steel pipe value-addedprocessing services.

d - Business enterprises that are engaged in the selling or trading of steelpipe or other tubular products and has actively traded or sold aminimum of 2500 net tons of tubular products in the preceding year.

Professional Affiliate members are business enterprises that do notqualify in any of the other two membership classes, provides products orservices to regular members of the NASPD, or is a not-for-profitorganization addressing issues similar to those important to theNASPD.

The Membership Committee is just one of several committees thatensures the successful future of the NASPD. It is integral to the long termsuccess of the association that the Membership Committee memberscontinue their hard work in finding prospective companies to join, andcontinue to search for a variety of companies in the industry to increasenetworking opportunities for current member companies.

A Tribute ToBeau UrechWhether a l i fe long fr iend or recentacquaintance, the kindness, respect andloving way that flowed from Beau made alasting impression on everyone around him.

Bowman Andrew Urech, the middle son ofHerman and Jane Urech, was born in Houston,TX. The family lived in Bellaire, then a suburbof the booming energy metropolis. Hermanwas an engineer and with the most earnest actof admiration a son can bestow, Beau followedin his father's career choice and attended theUniversity of Texas.

In Austin, Beau earned a B.S. in CivilEngineering. Byron recalled, "He is probablythe most humble UT graduate you'll ever meet. Those of us lucky enough to have observedBeau reminisce about his time at UT share acommon experience - while the school storieswould often elicit a wry smile, he neverboasted”. Later he would also earn an MBAfrom the Cox School of Business at SouthernMethodist University, but in 1980 with afreshly printed degree in hand, Beau was readyto work.

An illustrious pipe career that spanned nearlyfour decades began at Lone Star Steel. ByronDunn, CEO of Tubular Synergy Group, LP,who also worked for Lone Star Steel, recallsbeing intrigued by Beau from the moment theymet, “He had recently graduated from theUniversity of Texas and accepted a job as amanagement trainee. l had been selected tojoin this group of recent college grads in whatfor me was some remedial training. That wasthe beginning of our very special 38-yearfriendship.”

Early on Lone Star Steel recognized the valueof their newly acquired employee. RustyFisher, Sr. Vice President of Welspun GlobalTrade L.L.C, recalls, "They sent him to work allover - Longview, Dallas, and Houston, Texas, and Lafayette, Louisiana". In those first years,Lone Star also designated Beau for ametallurgy exchange study with a mill inOxolson, Sweden. Speaking on the employeecurrency exchange rate, Byron quipped “theSwedes sent us three guys who were all totalnot as intelligent as Beau".

(TRIBUTE cont. on page 12)

After the exchange program, Beau applied hisunique knowledge abroad in Aberdeen,Scotland, working in North Sea technical salesthen finally back to Dallas where he was basedfor the remainder of his time at Lone Star Steeland later at Tubular Synergy Group.

Although Dallas was home base, Beau spentcountless nights in hotels located in some of themost remote postal codes around the world -typically donning his navy blue cotton sweaterand grey trench coat. Beau's passion forknowledge and focus on the facts was sodisciplined that he managed to leave behind hiscell phone and/or laptop in nearly everycountry he visited. Rusty shared, “Beau was atrue world traveler. We personally traveled toat least nine countries together but Beautraveled to many more countries with Lone StarSteel and Tubular Synergy in his career.” Byronsurmised "Beau has probably visited every steelmill on the planet".

"Beau loved to share his knowledge - andcustomers loved that about him. But we allbenefited from his role as a teacher.” Some ofyou may already know that Beau set thestandard for teaching the NASPD OCTGClass. Not only did he develop the one-hourpresentation, he also pioneered a one-dayO C T G c l a s s f o c u s i n g o n u s a g e ,manufacturing, and significance of variousthreads. He spent a great deal of timedeveloping the curriculum and continuouslyupdated information to make it morecomprehensive and relevant.

This was evidenced by the sentiment Rustyheld after an immersion in Beau's curriculum,“I personally went through the class andlearned a tremendous amount. The peoplewho attended with me felt the same.” Furtherespousing, “Beau was the most technicallycompetent person I have known when itcomes to the combination of OCTG, LinePipe, and Steel. He was absolutely brilliant on

both OCTG pipe and threads. Beau had a keen understanding ofapplication requirements as they related to mill issues in the productionof pipe and threads. But he had an equally impressive grasp of operatorrequirements utilizing pipe in the field.” According to Rusty, thiscombination of qualities meant, “Beau understood markets better thanany technical person I have met in the industry.”

Much like the man himself tended to operate, Beau was the logical choicefor VP of Technical Services and he held the same position after movingover to Tubular Synergy Group in 2008. He was "The Go To Guy", on anytechnical matter, any place, any time. With admiration Byron says, “Hewas my walking Google Guy. I didn't need Google if Beau was in theroom - he knew everything. And I would put my guy up against your guy, sight unseen. Beau was that good! He never disappointed.” While Beau'sknowledge was trusted, he was not content to simply trust. At least notWikipedia, which by Beau's estimation was 80% accurate. Beau was likeRonald Reagan (his hero on the subject of trust), "Trust but Verify". Beautraveled the world over verifying production equipment and millcapabilities - a self-professed "equipment snob". Although it was rare, ifquestioned on manufacturing relevance, he utilized memorableanalogies to illustrate his point. As an example where manufacturingprocess was the subject, "What tastes better - the exact same recipe forbiscuits cooked in a tin pan at the school cafeteria, or in a covered castiron skillet from your grandmother's kitchen?"

It is common for powerful slogans to organically emerge from the work ofdistinguished individuals and this notion holds true with Beau'suncommon industry excellence:

First, at Lone Star Steel: 'The Tubular Experts'

Later, at Tubular Synergy Group: 'Trusted Knowledge'

In each instance, Beau was the foundation of the motto.

Livingston. Last week I traveled to Seattleand interviewed Guy Richards with 55years in the pipe business. On averagemost of these men had 50+ year careersand lots of interesting stories to tell. It hasbeen an awesome project so far, but thereare so many more I want to get to. Next onmy target list is Jerry Rubenstein alongwith many others. Please send me someideas of who you would want to hearabout next, with a concentration on theHouston area. Another part of my focuswill be interviewing the women of ourindustry. So far I have not done well in thatarea. I plan on contacting our 28thpresident, Diane Burger, for my trip toTexas. Cathy Williams, where are you?

The NASPD plans on editing and puttingthe interviews on the web site along withshowing a video montage of somehighlights at the San Diego Convention tobe held February 5th-8th, 2020.

Beemac Logistics, a Beaver, Pennsylvania-based transportation and logistics provider, has opened a newoffice in Houston to better serve clients in the region, said chief commercial officer Michael Ceravolo.

Beemac recently entered into an agreement to occupy a 5,000-square foot facility at the Towers atWestchase II, located in west Houston. The company plans to staff the office with 50 logisticsprofessionals.

“Over the past few years, our work in Texas has increased significantly. Houston has truly been a secondhome for Beemac Logistics for quite some time due to the fact that we have such a healthy base of loyalcustomers in the Houston area,” Ceravolo said.

Ceralvo added that Beemac Logistics provides storage, material handling, transloading, inspectionservices, warehousing, direct discharge as well as local and long-haul trucking with Beemac assets.

“We have a very strong base of carrier partners and service providers that work for us daily. With ourvalued partners, we can accomplish virtually any transportation service needed for our growing clientbase,” Ceravolo said.

Company officials said the Houston facility solidifies Beemac's presence in Houston, where it alreadyoperates multiple facilities with Beemac Trucking, which opened two new terminals in the Houstonarea in November 2018.

Beemac Trucking's new terminals are on a 15-acre facility in northeast Houston, where the companymanages 70 drivers. The facility provides pipe and other commodity storage with two high-liftingcapacity forklifts on site, in addition to offering inspection services and job site deliveries.

While Beemac Logistics and Beemac Trucking operate independently, they do share commonownership, said Ashley Boguszewski, a spokeswoman for Beemac Logistics.

“Also both Beemac Trucking and Beemac Logistics do have customers in Mexico and move loads fromMexico to the United States daily,” Boguszewski said. “Logistics also has a presence in Laredo, withcross-border operations and trans-loading services.”

Beemac Logistics also has offices in Midland, Texas, as well as Pittsburgh, Denver and Birmingham,Alabama. The company is an asset-light truckload, less-than-truckload and intermodal service providerthat offers transportation and logistics services, material management, trucking, storage services andwarehousing.

As a result of recent growth, Beemac, Inc. has been included in the The Inc. 5000 List for the second yearin a row.

Beau and I worked together for a time at Lone Star Steel Company. Iwent to Lafayette Louisiana where he was the resident salesEngineer to make calls together. This was back in the day that muchof the offshore Gulf of Mexico work was being engineered fromLafayette, New Orleans and Houston. We made our calls and I wasamazed at the relationships that Beau had made in such a shortperiod of time, genuine friendships first, business was second and anadded bonus. He had set up a meeting for that evening and Iassumed we were going to dinner at a place called Red's. He hadasked me to bring my work out gear and I always travelled with it, backthen at least! We went to Red's, a fitness club where Beau proceededto work out with the balance of the customers that were on hisitinerary for the week. We all had some kind of juice together, not asteak dinner, said our good-byes after a hard work out. Beau was theirfriend and confidant first, all young engineers making their waytogether.

I learned then that Beau was one of the most genuine hard workingpeople I had every been around. He built friendships that will lastlonger than his short life, but they were real, not social for theconvenience of an order. He was beyond smart, but notcondescending, his sense of humor was such an asset, if he didn'tknow something that interested him he would buy a book and seemlike he read it overnight and would be qualified by the next day. Imarveled at his deliberate, fun loving, serious when required manner.

He was the kid in class that always knew the answer but thateverybody liked. We stayed friends and I truly admired hiscontributions to the industry and his love for his family.

Thanks, buddy for letting me be a small part of your great life.

Wise, honorable, caring, loving, honest, brilliant, loyal, humorous, respectful: Pick any of these descriptive adjectives. They all apply toBeau Urech.

I would like to think that God called for Beau early because Heneeded Beau’s wisdom and thoughtful counsel. Let us hope that Godsends us more souls like Beau in the time to come.

George J.Allen -ArcelorMittal

Beau was always a happy guy, and he was undoubtedly happiest aroundhis wife, Misty, and the girls. Beau was a devoted and loving husband.Byron and his wife, Pam, had the privilege of attending their wedding 15years ago - “I had never seen his eyes sparkle like they did on that day".

A few years after they were married, Beau and Misty were blessed withthe girls, quadruplets - River, Rayne, Julianne and Skye. The fascinationthat steel pipe held for Beau was no comparison to his daughters, theywere the light of his life and Beau was proud to share his love for familywith those around him. Byron notes “When we had Monday morningmeetings at Tubular Synergy, we all looked forward to his weekenddownloads; aka - activities he did with the girls, what they cooked, etc.”

Speaking at the memorial service, Byron conveyed to Beau's daughtersthat their father was a “Renaissance Man” - someone who isknowledgeable, educated and proficient in a wide range of fields. Like oneof his favorite Rudyard Kipling poems, “If”, which Beau would read to thegirls at night – it taught his girls the same principles he chose to live by.

As Byron summarized: “Your dad was confident, but always humble. Hedidn't blame others if he made a mistake. He always listened to both sidesof the issue. He was cautious but he would take risks, and he acceptedany losses / consequences that came his way. These are all qualities ofyour remarkable dad!”

Beau was also a wonderful friend. Rusty says “As afriend he was very dependable and always supportive.Once you became Beau's friend, you knew that Beaualways had your back. He would do anything toassist a friend and he inspired his friends to do thesame."

Beau also had a wonderful sense of humor, albeit dry.To those accustomed to his understated humor, hewas extremely funny. Beau loved to laugh just asmuch as he enjoyed making others laugh. Rustyfondly recalled, “some of the greatest laughs I havehad in my life were with Beau Urech".

A great deal of Beau's humor was derived from his lovefor movies - mostly "B" movies or worse. He reallyenjoyed old sci-fi like "King Kong vs. Godzilla" and"Mothra". And he would invoke famous quotes fromhis favorite movies to inject levity into businessdealings. Strategy sessions were often wrapped upwith a twist on the renowned Marlon Brando (hisfavorite actor) line - "We'll make them an offer theycan't refuse". He truly enjoyed illustrating analogiesfrom his favorite movies.

Rusty shared one such example of Beau's wit – “Wehad a customer coming to the former Lone Star SteelMill in East Texas for a tour. The pipe market waspoor at the time and we had no actual production foran order but we elected to simulate production and

I first met Beau Urech, some 25 years ago, during a time when we were activelyworking with Lone Star Steel and their executives. When I met Beau, I knew rightaway that I was working with a steel pipe GENIUS. Not only was Beau one of the mostknowledgeable technical pipe people, but he approached his tasks with incredibleenthusiasm. Beau would show this enthusiasm in his excitement and high energywhen discussing the core issues of a pipe defect.

As President of Tex-Tube from December 1994 until July of 2000, I had the opportunitythat not many pipe distributors ever have, to be a pipe manufacturer. I strived to learnas much as I could about the technical aspects of manufacturing steel pipe, yet myknowledge was negligible as compared to Beau's knowledge. When the NASPDdecided to develop an education program, there was no doubt in my mind that we hadto lasso Beau Urech into being one of our presenters—he could have done the whole2 day presentation by himself but his specialty were the sections on OCTG.

Eventually, I took on the task of teaching the section on “How Steel Pipe is Made”. Ivividly recall the first year I presented this section and watching Beau, who was sittingin the audience, to see if I had made any miss-statements. Fortunately, he mostlynodded his approval. After the presentation, I recall asking Beau where I erred—heshared a few comments and gave me a few tips.

I also recall how much Beau loved his wife and his daughters. When asked how thegirls were doing, he would share with me interesting and loving stories about eachone, and always with an incredible sense of love, admiration and joy—he marveled athis daughter's accomplishments.

One of the few things I have 100% confidence is saying that “Beau Urech was unique”and I dare say that there will never be anyone like him in our industry. He will bemissed by all that knew him but most of all his family. May his kind demeanor andloving way be fondly recalled by all who knew him.

roll some pipe, to give the customer an idea ofmill capabilities.” On this particular occasion,Beau recognized a parallel from the 1988Chevy Chase film 'Funny Farm'. At wits end, trying to sell their farm, the couple in themovie enlist the help of local town folk in asubterfuge to present an idyllic New Englandhomestead. Their shenanigans includedChevy's character relaying via walkie-talkie"cue the deer"; at which point a pair of deerfrolic across the snowy landscape for thepotential buyers. Cognizant of the millproduction irony, when the customer enteredthe mill, Beau advised the mill supervisor to“cue the deer” - code for "get the pipe rolling".

Beau was a faithful friend. He always gavemore than he expected to receive - to hisfamily, friends, colleagues and competitors.(Well, maybe not to his competitors.) But thepoint is that Beau has undoubtedly givensomething to all of us. Andwhile he can never bereplaced, we should allaspire to his example andwork in concert to honorhis legacy, by taking upthe standard Beau carriedwith humility and humorfor the NASPD.
