Third Grade January 2020 Readers Workshop In this unit, “Character Studies”, third grade students will study characters in stories they read. Readers will develop theories about characters based on things that characters do over and over. They will understand how characters face and react to trouble, and how they can learn a lot about characters by paying close attention to how they respond to challenges. Third graders will compare characters within and across texts. Students will practice skills in literal comprehension, making inferences and interpretation. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answer Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text. Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. Writers Workshop In this unit “Baby Literary Essays”, third graders will write opinion essays. They will do so by developing an idea and supporting that idea by using reasons and evidence from texts. Students will learn the structure of an essay by stating an idea clearly, finding details to support that idea, and then crafting an essay from beginning to end. They will also learn to cite text evidence clearly and organize their writing into paragraphs . The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. Introduce the topic or text they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. Use linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect opinion and reasons. Provide a concluding statement or section. In the Go Math program, third grade students will learn division facts and strategies. They will learn how to divide by the numbers 3-9. They will learn the division rules for 0 and 1. They will also learn how to solve equations involving division. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are: Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Readers Workshop

In this unit, “Character Studies”, third grade students will study characters in stories they read. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are:

• Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answer

• Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text.

• Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.

Writers Workshop In this unit “Baby Literary Essays”, third graders will write opinion essays. They will do so by developing an idea and supporting that idea by using reasons and evidence from texts. • Introduce the topic or text they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons.

• Use linking words and phrases (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect opinion and reasons.

• Provide a concluding statement or section.

During the month of January, third grade scientists will be finalizing the Balancing Forces unit by finding out how various balanced and unbalanced forces allow the magnetic train to rise, fall and float. They will conclude the unit by synthesizing all of the information they have learned to create a computerized model/diagram of the train in various states. Students will explain through the use of the diagramming tool the forces that are working at each point of the train’s trip.

In this unit, Introduction to World Geography and World Communities, students will answer the essential question “Why does geography matter?” Students will learn how geographers use tools to interpret maps, and how physical features and climate affect human settlement. Students will learn about the cultures of different countries and civilizations, as well as how they change over time.
