Workshop Description

A growing demand over time and continuous consumption seem to be behind the idea of seeking other gas and oil re-sources in deep and tight reservoirs. Exploration and develop-ment activities have increased in the last few years to cover the Middle East’s requirement of hydrocarbons, which is highly anticipated to be one of the most attractive and technically challenging areas.

The third EAGE/AAPG Workshop on Tight Reservoirs in the Middle East will reap the fruits of the success from the first two workshops in addition to strengthening cooperation be-tween AAPG and EAGE to develop a series of multi-disciplined gatherings dedicated to understanding, completing and pro-ducing from tight clastics and carbonate reservoirs.

Our key objective is to meet worldwide experts from different disciplines, (geology, geophysics, petrophysics, engineering), in the oil industry in order to share their knowledge and experi-ence to identify potential challenges, solutions and the best practices applicable to the region to unlock tight reservoirs; this will be supported by presentations of successful case stud-ies and the sharing of lessons learned through technical discus-sions, communication and networking.

This workshop targets economic planners, technical experts and decision makers with experience in exploring and de-veloping tight oil and gas reservoirs and who are working in national, international, operational and service companies as well as in academic and research institutions.

Call for Papers

The technical committee invites abstracts of two A4 pages in length, which can include appropriate figures to support the key message. Abstracts are to be submitted via the EAGE website and the submission deadline for this workshop is 31 March 2015.

Topics:1. Resource Assessment and Prospect Development2. Reservoir Characterisation3. Drilling and Completion4. Stimulation and Production5. Environmental Stewardship

Please refer the EAGE website for full descriptions of the topics.

Short Course

An Introduction to Hydraulic FracturingInstructed by Tony Martin (Director, Integrated Stimulation Expertise, EARCBaker Hughes Reservoir Development Services) Sunday 4 October 2015

Hydraulic fracturing has become the completion method of choice in many parts of the world and is now the single larg-est sector of the upstream oil and gas industry, after offshore drilling. This often highly complex process has enabled many so-called uneconomic oil and gas resources to be successfully exploited commercially.

The discipline itself combines elements from mechanical en-gineering, thermodynamics, chemistry, geology, fluid me-chanics, petroleum engineering, fracture mechanics, pressure transient analysis, heat transfer, stress analysis, computer simulation and rock mechanics. This makes it one of the most interesting and engaging of all the various oil and gas extrac-tion processes for an engineer to be involved in.

This one-day short course is intended as an introduction to the art and science of hydraulic fracturing – the processes in-volved, candidate selection, treatment design and post-treat-ment evaluation. It will also focus on two of the most active and innovative areas within hydraulic fracturing – unconven-tional gas and multi-stage horizontal wells.
