About the Congressional Hockey Challenge

On March 6, 2009, Congressional Staff, Administration officials and lobbyists from a wide range of interests and industries left behind their day jobs to join together for a little fun on the ice to raise funds for the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club. The first game was played at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and had a crowd of around 300 attendees. The Lawmakers won a hard-fought 6-4 victory on that first afternoon, thanks to two goals by Congressman Brian Higgins of Buffalo (D-NY-27) and spectacular goaltending by Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY-9).

Thus was born the Congressional Hockey Chal-lenge. All involved share a love of the game of ice hockey coupled with a desire to make it a more widely accessible sport. In a decidedly partisan town, this event brings together lawmak-ers and lobbyists, Republicans and Democrats, in a charity ice hockey game to raise money for worthy groups.

The Congressional Hockey Challenge allows inner-city youth in Washington, DC the opportu-

nity to participate in activities and programs that build much-needed confidence and team-building skills as well as offer educational benefits.

In 2010, the event was moved to the Fort Dupont Ice Arena and garnered the support of the National Hockey League and the Washington Capitals. Over 500 crowded the stands to watch the game, and over $50,000 was raised for the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club and Fort Dupont Ice Arena. The Lobbyists, thanks to stellar goaltending by Andrew Emerson and Brian Regan, and a potent offense spearheaded by C2 GROUP’s own Nelson Litterst (two goals) and Sean O’Neill of the Associated General Contractors of America (one goal, two assists), roared back to win 7-2.

This year’s ice hockey game is being played at the Verizon Center due to the assistance and generosity of the Washington Capitals and the National Hockey League. There are many additional sponsors including Bridgestone Americas Trust Fund, Comcast, PhRMA and UPS to name a few that have helped to make this year’s event a success!

We invite you to thumb through this program to learn more about ALL our generous spon-sors as well as the players that make up each of tonight’s rosters.

Thank you for being here to support the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club and the Fort Dupont Ice Arena. With each team a victor in previous meetings, you can bet tonight’s game will be a great one!

About the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club

Founded in 1978 by Neal Henderson, The Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club is an NHL-sponsored, award-winning 501(c)(3) charitable organization providing local and inner-city youth with the opportunity to participate in an organized ice hockey program. Participants have a wide range of experience in skating and game play, and ages range from 8 to 17. The program teaches young people discipline through athletics and coaching, and helps establish self-esteem, a sense of purpose, and offers an incentive to excel academically. The benefits of or-ganized sports extend far beyond the rink: the girls and boys who join the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club learn life skills. As these children grow, they will become bet-ter citizens and will learn to give respect and anticipate respect. Children participating in the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club have a 100 percent high school gradua-tion rate, and over 90 percent continue to higher educa-tion. In 2010, Neal was the recipient of the Bridgestone Americas Mark Messier Youth Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious awards given to a member of the hockey community.

About the Fort Dupont Ice Arena

The home rink of the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club, the Fort Dupont Ice Arena is situated on National Park Ser-vice land and operated by Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The Arena contains the only public indoor ice rink in the District of Columbia and has been named as an America’s Promise “Safe Place” – a safe place for young people with structured activities during non-school hours. This designation was awarded to the Arena in December of 2001 by America’s Promise, the Alliance for Youth organization founded by General Colin L. Powell. It serves as an anchor in its community and as a place of refuge for children in need by providing skating instruc-tion and classroom activities free of charge or at highly affordable rates.
