THINK TANK MEETING ON RESEARCH CHALLENGES IN BREAST CANCER
1-3 March 2018 Palazzo Bernabei, Assisi - Italy
Under the patronage
AIMS- to identify grey zones in daily clinical practice in breast cancer treatment by detecting
where the evidence is not so firm, - to brainstorm on issues in combined treatment modalities,- to identify affordable trial proposals to address the issues and put them forward to the
scientific community, public and private sponsors - to promote cure and enhance patients’ quality of life.
METHOD
To achieve these aims the Meeting will take the following steps:
1. The Scientific Organizers (SO) nominated an international Expert Board (EB) and identified the
main clinical situations demanding investigation;
2. The SO chose the Chairs and Speakers for each topic;
3. Clinical cases with questions on treatment options were prepared;
4. The EB voted on different clinical choices in a monkey questionnaire before the meeting;
5. At the meeting, on Day 1 (Thursday afternoon, 1 March 2018), the EB will:
a) discuss the monkey survey results and the outstanding clinical issues
b) select the trial proposals to be debated on the following days
6. On Day 2 (Friday, 2 March 2018), trial proposals will be presented and debated by the EB.
Meeting attendees, who will act as the first validation group, will comment on the proposals
from their perspective. Moreover, potential public and private research sponsors will attend and
decide whether they are interested in funding the research proposals.
7. On Day 3 (Saturday, 3 March 2018), the EB will
a) review protocol drafts to outline the final proposals
b) deliver a set of trial proposals for each topic, each of which will include:
1. Aim
2. Primary and secondary endpoints
3. Patient selection
4. Treatment modalities to be tested
5. Research method: prospective study (expected benefit should be defined so as to
set the accrual number and timing) or large data base collection
c) plan the outline of the white paper to be written about ATTM and trial proposals
d) set topics for future meetings.
TOPICS1. Primary systemic therapy, mastectomy and breast reconstruction, post mastectomy radiation therapy2. Therapeutic options in ductal carcinoma in situ3. De-escalated therapies in early breast cancer
