2VISTAGEMALAYSIANEWS • SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER2012

Thinking Big in 2013Vistage Malaysia steps into year 2013 with a big bout of confidence andbig dreams. Our outlook is emboldened with a higher-than-expected growth in Vistage membership. When we celebrated our 15th an-niversary with the launch-ing of the “Changing and Growing” coffee table book in 2009, I had envisioned 400 members by 2012. To our delight, the number has reached 411 with combined annual sales of >RM35 bil-lion and employing about 60,000 employees.

We are, of course, putting on our thinking caps again to plan more growth strate-gies in the next few years. Between January 22 and 26, Members, Chairs and staff will have lots of op-portunities to pick up new ideas at the Vistage 2013 International Member & Chair Conference to be held in Dallas, Texas. There will be a contingent of 19 from Vistage Malaysia at-tending this event. They will learn how to ‘think big’ at workshops with topics on uncertainty, human capital, globalization, technology and leadership.

There are a few ideas to explore. One of these is better recognition for the ‘heart and soul’ of Vistage – our Chairs. This relates to the title of Master Chair and those deserving chairs will be bestowed with this special title by Vistage In-ternational HQ as long as the Chair is in service. This will be a BIG boost to high achieving Chairs.

To further value add to our Vistage members and also extend Vistage’s reach to a wider scope, we are ac-tively exploring with repu-table universities including co-opting HQ to grant ad-vanced degrees closely tied

to workplace or experiential learning in managing busi-ness issues and challenges. This would involve long-term planning, and working with a university of good standing on the syllabus and Vistage corporate tie-ups.

Many exciting challenges await us in 2013. May I extend Best Wishes to all Members and Chairs for a joyful and productive year ahead. Think big, dream big and achieve big. Vistage Malaysia is already envisioning to have at least 600 members by 2015!

~ Richard CM Wong, Chairman & Chief Listener

giving good DealsAndReW TK LiM, MAnAging diReCToR of KL Sogo is a firm believ-er in walking the talk when giving incentives and re-warding performers, wheth-er staff or suppliers. This management practice has helped him to retain high achievers and grow a highly competitive retail business.

Popular departmental store KL SOGO will be celebrating its19thanniversaryinJanuary2013.Thesinglestorewasinadifficulttransitionstagein 2002 but has since grown by leaps and bounds to estimated sales revenue of RM600 million in FY2012/2013. What is surprising is that the CEO who turned the company around is a lawyer who had no prior experience in the retailing industry. Andrew TK Lim, Managing Director of SOGO (K.L.) Department Store Sdn. Bhd., reveals that he was not fearful of the challenges because Vistage Malaysia was there to help him make sound business decisions.

On hindsight, Andrew TK Lim says that the turnaround involved readjustment of merchandise and pricing. To understand this, he gives the background behind KL SOGO. It was inspired by former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad who envisioned

an iconic departmental store in Kuala Lumpur (like the ones he saw in Japan). The Japanese joint venture partners were pleased to transfer their know-how to Malaysia and they designed KL SOGO from scratch.

When KL SOGO opened in January 1994, it was afive-star,up-marketretailer.TheRM480mbuilding was constructed with marble floorsandluxuriousfittings, andsoldexpensivehighbrand imported merchandise. Its Japanese

partnersbroughtinthefinestnotonlyingoodsbutalsoJapanesemanagersandretailingsystems. KLites were in awe of the beautiful store and the luxurious goods on sale.

But, “There was a big mismatch with the customer base,” explains Andrew TK Lim. The Malaysiancustomers’needsandbuyingpowerforthatlocation, atthattime, didnotfitinto the high-end niche. Eventually, lethargic sales and a property bubble burst in Japan all took its toll. Andrew TK Lim came into the picture because he was the lawyer who drew up agreements for the Japanese partners and was from the beginning invited to sit on the Board of Directors. He organized a management buyout in 2002 to take over the business.

Andrew TK Lim notes that the takeover ‘was not that frightening’ because he had many friends in KL SOGO, namely the senior managers who had been running the show. At first, hethoughthecouldpickupthetricksofthetradebymanagingthestorehimselfbut it was an uphill task. Thanks to the advice and help from his Vistage Chair, he decided toengageaChiefOperatingOfficer todo the job. “This isoneofmybestbusiness decisions arising from the one-to-one meeting with my Vistage Chair,” he acknowledges.

To grow and sustain business, Andrew TK Lim says that people management is the key. He practices what he calls ‘incentive-based management’. This means clearly spelling out the ‘carrots’ and really giving it out when people perform. “You must believe in and really actualise the incentive system”, he adds.

Personally, he reveals that this was initially an inner struggle and “mental agony” because of his frugal mindset (attributed to the Penangite in him). It took time to re-orientate his thinking. Now, high achievers at KL SOGO are amply rewarded not only in pay but also in incentives and overseas study trips. They go to famous shopping

destinations such as Paris, London and New York to see the sights as well as inspect major department stores there like Harrods, Saks, Nordstrom and Bloomingdales.

Besides rewards, Andrew TK Lim develops human capital using the Vistage process. A Vistage member since 2003, Andrew TK Lim still continues his one-to-one session with his Chair and has extended the mentoring system to his subordinates. He has signed up four managers at KL SOGO as members of Vistage Malaysia, and was presented the Vistage Star Supporter Award on October 30, 2012.

Andrew TK Lim also rewards his hardworking suppliers aka business partners. KL SOGO’s long list of suppliers sell mainly Malaysian brand names, from shoes, clothes, bags to household items and food. He emphasizes that the store adopts a ‘strict retail discipline’ where rewards are tied to sales performance. Once linked to KL SOGO’s computerized system of sales, grading and assessment, suppliers can gauge their performanceonadailybasis.Thefactsandfiguresspeakforthemselves.

“Give them a good deal, if they do well, give them prominence (in retail space). It is a proper monitoring system of allocation. Some will grumble but they still respect the system” he points out. Andrew TK Lim reinforces his appreciation to suppliers every year at a grand

dinner. He applauds their achievements and implores them to reach higher peaks at an annual Business Partners Appreciation Banquet.

At KL SOGO, the well “incentivised” staff and suppliers get the store up and running with good bargains for shoppers all year round. Looking at the high turnover, it is without doubt that there is

Everyone let their hair down, and those who vied for the” King” and “Queen” of the Nite pranced and danced to impress the judges. The 2012 crown went to Woo KT, who looked every inch like a “Shanghai big boss” and Kareena Tan who exuded much charm in her classic cheongsam.

VISTAGE-MIER CEO CONFIDENCE INDEX

CEO optimism on the outlook of the Malaysian economy, as well as the prospects of their firms, fell marginally in the fourth quarter of 2012. The 4Q 2012 Vistage-MIER CEO Confidence Index fell amarginal 0.8 points to settle lower at 91.7 points. While the quarter-on-quarter fall of the Index may be insig-nificant,thefactthatthisisthe sixth consecutive quar-ter of readings below the 100-point neutral level is an important indication of persistent low.

Proportionately fewer CEOs (46% compared to52% previously) expecttheir firm’s profitability toimprove going forward, a reflection of expectationsof worsening business conditions in the months ahead. As a consequence, fewer respondents expect to increase their firms’ to-talfixedinvestmentexpen-diture (40% compared to46% previously) and totalnumberofemployees(42%comparedto44%).

Corruption & businessIn this survey, respondents were asked whether their companies have lost busi-ness or business opportu-nities because of their re-

fusal to engage in corrupt practices.While27%ofre-spondents answered “yes”, it is interesting to note that 30% answered “no com-ment”.

LeVeL OF pRepaRedNeSS FOR gSt IMpLeMeNtatIONWhile the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been successfully implemented in 146 countries, it remains a hotly debated topic in Malaysia. This quarter’s survey results suggest that Malaysian companies are generally still not prepared for the implementation of GST. When asked about their company’s level of preparedness, only 7 per cent of responding CEOs indicated that they are “all ready to go” while a significant 61 per cent indicated “no action taken yet.”

WOMeN IN SeNIOR MaNageMeNt pOSItIONSThe Government has been encouraging more women in senior management positions. In fact, according to a 2007 study by McKinsey & Company entitled ‘Women Matter: gender diversity, a corporate performance driver’, stronger stock market growth is more likely to occur when senior management teams have a higher proportion of women on board. If asked to choose between two equally suitable candidates but of different gender for a particular senior management position in their companies, 46 per cent of CEOs indicated they would choose a man while 48 per cent indicated they would choose a woman.

pRIVate eQuItY FuNdINg In 2011, the RM5.12 billion buyout offer for Malaysia's fast food operators KFC and QSR made by a team comprising Johor Corp and the EPF made the offer one of the largest private equity deals in Southeast Asia. However, private equity penetration in Malaysia as a percentage of GDP remains low when compared to countries like Singapore and the U.S. That’s in line with the results of this survey which showed that less than half (45%) of respondingCEOs indicated that they are willing to invite private equity firms to participate in their organization.

SaLaRY INCReMeNtS aNd bONuS paYOutS Good employees are valuable assets and hiring, training and overhead costs associated with replacing someone who has left can be high. Survey results suggest that CEOs are well aware of this. Even though CEO confidence remains low, as indicated by the Index that had plodded through 2012 at below the 100-point neutral level, most CEOs still have plans to make salary increments and bonus payments to their staff for the financial year ending 31 December 2012.

CONFIdeNCe ReMaINS LOW CEO optimism on the outlook of the Malaysian economy, as well as the prospects of their firms, fell marginally in the fourth quarter of 2012. The 4Q2012 Vistage-MIER CEO Confidence Index fell a marginal 0.8 points to settle lower at 91.7 points. While the quarter-on-quarter fall of the Index may be insignificant, the fact that this is the sixth consecutive quarter of readings below the 100-point neutral level is an important indication of persistent low CEO confidence.

The quarter-on-quarter performances of the six component indices of the 4Q2012 Index were mixed. Three component indices – namely current economic conditions, planned fixed investment and expected profit growth – settled lower while two – expected economic conditions and expected revenue growth – settled higher. The remaining component – expected change in employment – remained unchanged.

Of the 311 respondents responding to this survey, proportionately more CEOs (38% compared to 31% in the previous quarter)believe that overall economic conditions in Malaysia worsened compared to a year ago. However, when asked about anticipated changes in economic conditions over the next 12 months, a slightly higher proportion of respondents (17% as compared to 14%)indicated that they expect conditions to improve.

With regard to expectations of their firms’ sales performance over the next 12 months, there was hardly any change in the proportion ofCEOsanticipatinghighersales(57%comparedto56%percentpreviously).However,proportionatelyfewerCEOs(46%comparedto52%previously)nowexpecttheirfirm’sprofitabilitytoimprovegoing forward, a reflection of expectations of worsening business conditions in the months ahead. As a consequence, proportionately fewer respondents expect to increase their firms’ total fixed investment expenditure (40% compared to 46%previously)andtotalnumberofemployees(42%comparedto44%previously).

CORRuptIONAccording to PEMANDU, “corruption erodes public confidence in the ability of the Government and other key institutions in maintaining a fair playing field for all participants, and could dissuade private investment.”

In this survey, respondents were asked whether their companies have lost business or business opportunities because of their refusal to engage in corrupt practices.

While 27 per cent of respondents answered “yes”, it is interesting to note that 30 per cent answered “no comment”.

SpeNdINg ON INFORMatION teCHNOLOgYThe results of the last Confidence Index survey indicated that only 3 per cent of CEOs spend, as a percentage of sales, between 15 and 20 per cent on IT while a majority of 59 per cent spend between zero and 5 per cent.

When asked what would compel them to invest more on IT, 58 per cent indicated increased firm profitability. Tax incentives from the government, as well as a rise in issues resulting from rapid business growth are also important, as indicated by 49 and 48 per cent of the respondents, respectively.
