Things to bring as a newcomer

    # Full Sweater: 2-3 (bring good sweater.. personally i prefer from good shops, don't buy bongo

    bazar things)

    # Hoody (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoodie): These are very popular with young people... 2-3are reasonable

    # Half Sweater: 1 (not very important)

    # Thermal wear/Inner: 4-5 or more

    # Winter Caps (tupi): 2 (with heavy material). DON'T bring monkey caps or P-caps!

    # Gloves: 1-2 pairs (woolen/leather), but not heavy ones...those are backdated..

    # Mufflers: 1-2.

    # Jackets: for winter: at least 1 heavy jacket for winter, prefebly with windbraker and waterproof

material (Plz don't buy long jacket from gulisthan or bongo bazar...)for summer: 1-2 light jacket for summer, u can buy more cause u need these frequently

    # Blanket, Pillow, Covers: student dormitories rent out pillow, blanket and covers for about 15

eur.which is very cheap, so normally u dont need to bring them. Optionally u can bring 1 or 2 extra bedsheets and pillow covers...for backups when the ones from the dorm get dirty and u have to

    wash and dry them.

    # Sandals: 1 good one for outdoors during summer + 1 comfortable one for indoors

    (like sponge/beach sandal)

    # Bagpack: for university... the rucksack/backpack version is used here the

most as it is easier to carry and run around with. its a must. try to bring one with laptop carier.

    # Winter shoes/snow boots: 1 (like mountain hiking boots...

should be of heavy material and have good spikes

so u dont slip in the snow during winter... DON'T buy rain boots!)

**** i think you should buy a pair of shoes in Germany. But it's up to you. Because Bangladeshishoes are not good enough.

    # Keds/good walking shoes (casual): very useful for walking mainly during summer, also most of the time in winter when there is no snow... personally I prefer keds as they are reallycomfortable... here keds are really common among all ages of people

    # Formal shoes: 1 (actually not really required, but u can bring one if u like... it's almost like thesuit/blazer... u will hardly wear them)

    # Tshirts (Half/Full, Colar/Colarless/Highneck): As many as you can (clothes are costly here)...normally u will be wearing these most of the time, even during the winter under your jacket/swe

ater... of course it depends on your personal choice.

*** my suggestion is that don't buy t-shirts from bongo bazar.

    # Half and Full Shirts: not much required. maybe 2or3, maybe more... again it depends on yourpersonal choice.

    # Trousers/Pants: bring mainly Jeans and Gabardines/Cod-pants (heavy cotton pants), like 4-5... specially jeans! Normal/formal trousers are rarely worn here... maybe u can bring 1 or 2 for s

ummer, it's up to u. Also u can bring some comfortable trousers to wear indoors.

    # Socks and Undergarments: as much as possible.

    # Belts (for trousers/jeans)

    # Panjabi & Pajama (optional)

    # Lungis/Sleeping dress (if u use them)

    # Towels: 1-2

    # Toiletries like toothbrush toothpaste, soap/shower-gel, shampoo, face/body cream,

vaseline, deodorant/perfume, dental floss, shaving razor/blades/foam, etc etc whatever u need.

Remember that most toiletries are not so expensive here(except Gillette blades, which are also expensive in BD) so just bring a few of each toiletries u need for the initial period.

    # Stationery stuffs: Most stationery things are quite expensive here,

so try to bring all the basic things (which are small and easy to carry) like pens, pencils, calculat

or, rubber, ruler,highlighters/markers, stapler, punching machine, paper clips, glue, superglue, tape, scissors, etc whatever u need. Loose papers are not very expensive.

    # Table clock (with alarm), nail cutter, combs, threads/needles (if u need), shoe brush/polish (ifu bring formal shoes), extra Spectacles/Glasses (if u wear them; spectacles are very expensive

    here).

    # Different types of spices/masallas (optional). Bangladeshi shop are available in some areas

where u can buy all types of deshi spices/dals, also some fish, though they naturally cost more

    than in BD.

BRING AS MUCH AS YOU CAN********

    # Foods: not necessary as most foods are not very expensive here. Remember that there is the

every possibility that they will throw them away at the German airport if checked or if u are

unlucky! So better not bring any open/unpacked food if possible. You can bring some dry foods like chanachur just for snack purposes during the initial period,it's up to u.

    # 1or2 Plates, 1 glass/cup should be sufficient for the initial period. If u want, you can bringsome cutleries or other small kitchen utensils (like knives, spoons, forks, can-opener, potato-

peeler, etc), but remember most things maybe available.in the dormitory kitchen, it's best to talk

    with local students about this.

DON'T bring big kitchen utensils like pans or korai, unless u have lots of luggage weight to

    spare!

    # Jainamaj and Quran Sharif (up to u)

    # Umbrella (important!)

    # Cigarettes/lighter (if you smoke!): As far as I know, 1 carton (200 cigarettes) max!

Above that, you will be required to pay tax.

    # Recent passport size(Biometric photos) photos

    # Bring all necessary documents and papers... all certificates/transcripts, certificates of your soci

al involvements, etc... every paper you can remember.

    # Books: Course related books/references should be available in the libraries, but u should talk to

current students about this. You can bring one German to English dictionary (pocket-sized or normal.sized whatever u can carry), and maybe some reference books (like for programming Java, C/C++, Matlab, etc) if u need them. Don't bring too many books as they take up a lot

    of weight!

    # PC: It's good if u have a laptop. But bringing PC or computer parts is not very advisable as it

will consume space and weight, also PCs are not very expensive here if u bring some cash for it.

You can check the websitewww.arlt.comfor prices (for laptops www.notebooksbilliger.de),just for a guide. Maybe u can bring just a hard disk with all the necessary documents and softwa

    res, etc.

    # Mobile phone: u can bring one (without SIM) if u have one lying around at home... then it maybe be a little cheaper for u to get a mobile contract here (as u dont have to pay for the mobile).

But in some contracts, it sometimes hardly/doesn't cost any extra to get a new mobile phone withthe contract!

    # CDs/DVDs (with illegal softwares, games, movies etc): Be careful about this! You may bring t

hem if very necessary, but don't label them (or dont use the printed CDs from shops)... it's better

to burn them separately in blank disks (unmarked/unlabeled), so if asked u can just tell that theyare just your personal docs. Recently I heard a case where a Bangladeshi was asked in an airport

in Germany about some pirated software CDs he brought from BD. Luckily he had the receipt/ca

sh memo of the CDs he bought from the BD shop and showed that to them, then they let him go.At present times, they are getting stricter here regarding pirtaed stuffs (also foods), so it's advisable not to carry any. Also with the high internet speed available here, u can download almost

anything from the internet, if u can find the right source.

    # Very important!! Try to bring some basic/essential medicines with u, like for fever/cold,

acidity, stomach pain, loose motion, constipation, headache, sinus, etc etc whatever u need often.

Don't worry! Your health insurance should cover some medicine cost here, so these are just forbackup.

    # Blazer/Suit/Ties: not really necessary and most useless item... cause u will hardly have any ch

ance to wear them, except in formal occasions (which occur very rarely,or where suits are mostlyoptional), or later like in job interviews (after completing studies)... so it's up to u.

Hope this will be helpful for you!
