Page 13: THING CONNECTIVITY IN YOUR BUILDINGS AND DATA CENTERS€¦ · AUGMENTED REALITY Workforce Enablement Intelligent Asset Management Utility Infrastructure Workforce Enablement. 35 ARCHITECTURE

13

Why are we thinking about this, anyway? Where is the value?

• More information carefully modeled and analyzed leads to more understanding

• Increased visibility into systems, between systems, and the factors that influence systems enables them to be better understood and better managed

Better management of BA and DC systems:• Reduces energy usage • Increases employee productivity• Increases machine on-time• Reduces environmental impact• Meets other environmental and regulatory goals• Enables easier, faster, and more holistic issue diagnosis

THE GOAL

Page 14: THING CONNECTIVITY IN YOUR BUILDINGS AND DATA CENTERS€¦ · AUGMENTED REALITY Workforce Enablement Intelligent Asset Management Utility Infrastructure Workforce Enablement. 35 ARCHITECTURE

14

So, how do we begin to make this all happen?

1. Connect to your Things! It all starts with connectivity

2. Get all your data in one spot! You can derive far more insights if you can look at all of the

data together.

THE SOLUTION

Page 15: THING CONNECTIVITY IN YOUR BUILDINGS AND DATA CENTERS€¦ · AUGMENTED REALITY Workforce Enablement Intelligent Asset Management Utility Infrastructure Workforce Enablement. 35 ARCHITECTURE

15

Once Things are connected, your options are open:• Visualization – SCADA, human-machine interfaces• Machine learning• Big Data analysis

But, you don’t have options unless you have data, and you won’t have data without connecting your Things

• Sure, maybe you can collect CSV files, but that isn’t scalable

16

Get all your data in one spot! You can derive far more insights if you can look at all of the data together.

THE HOW

• Create a “data lake” out of

many individual ponds

• Ponds can be things or

systems

• Nature of data can be real-

time and historical

• Remember the goal: Make

deeper insights within and

between systems, and

potentially take meaningful

action quickly (controls)

• More about data:• Real-time data is in flight (not at rest)

• Historical data is data at rest (not in flight)

• Nature of collecting this data is different • Must obtain real-time in “real-time”, or as fast as it

is produced

• Historical data can be ingested at slower intervals

Page 17: THING CONNECTIVITY IN YOUR BUILDINGS AND DATA CENTERS€¦ · AUGMENTED REALITY Workforce Enablement Intelligent Asset Management Utility Infrastructure Workforce Enablement. 35 ARCHITECTURE

17

Bonus Result: Enable data exchange between systems

• Once Things are connected, moving data between Things is possible

• By sharing data, systems can make smarter, more holistic decisions

THE HOW

Eventually, Things may even

manage themselves to the

same extent that people can.

Goal: Connect all the Things and build your data lake

• Wouldn’t it be nice if every Thing had a secure, wireless, Internet-ready data interface built using open standards?

• Maybe some day, but today the reality is quite different

Challenge: Thing ConnectivityThere are lots and lots and lots of systems.

REFOCUS: THING CONNECTIVITY

Page 21: THING CONNECTIVITY IN YOUR BUILDINGS AND DATA CENTERS€¦ · AUGMENTED REALITY Workforce Enablement Intelligent Asset Management Utility Infrastructure Workforce Enablement. 35 ARCHITECTURE

21

Problems: Ponds, ponds, pondsMix of physical mediums• Copper, fiber, optical, wireless (Ethernet, Zigbee,

and so forth)

Mix of languages• Standards like:

– BACnet– LonWorks− KNX− Modbus− SNMP− DNP3, IEC 61850, 60870− Others

• Vendors’ proprietary protocols• Application APIs

REFOCUS: THING CONNECTIVITY

Some areas and systems have no existing

sensors or data interfaces

Mix of data stores• Relational databases, file stores, object

stores, system logs

22

Challenge: Thing ConnectivityIn many cases, Things are already part of managed systems:

• HVAC

• Lighting Controls

• Access Controls

• Fire Suppression

Do you connect to an application server in the system or to the Thing directly? It depends.

Example 1: Model HVAC system via connectivity directly to HVAC system controller.Example 2: Model Access Control system via connectivity to database back-end.

23

No existing Things? Closed System with no existing data interfaces?

Maybe no problem.

It’s often easier and more cost-effective to augment with third-party physical gateways, protocol converters, and sensors than to replace your old Things with new, smarter Things.

• Protocol gateways can help access closed or complex networks:– LON/KNX gateways, Zigbee-to-Ethernet, MBus to Modbus converters

• Sensors with data interfaces are inexpensive and widely available:– Temp/Humidity/Dewpoint sensor with simple ASCII protocol over TCP; maybe even

RESTful web services using HTTP and an object model like JSON– Cost-effective (~$5 to $500) and easy integration (quick ROI)

24

Strategy

1. Determine interfaces of existing Things

2. Bridge physical mediums and proprietary/fieldbus protocols with inexpensive gateway devices

3. Add new sensors as needed

4. Establish Thing connectivity using a device connectivity platform (like KEPServerEX®)

5. Connect your connectivity platform to your lake (and connect Things to the lake directly when possible/if advantageous)

With a single, standardized platform, you can connect to lots of Things:

• HVAC controls, lighting controls, sensors, servers, storage, fire suppression, and so forth

• Fieldbus/control network protocol gateways

• Sensors, meters, probes

Two results toward your goals:

• Provides data to almost any system, including your data lake

• Automatically exchanges data between connected Things
