Welcome to Thimble & Thread Quilt Guild
We hope you will join us at one of our monthly meetings, a workshop, a retreat or even
a quilt show. Explore our web site http://www.thimbleandthreadstl.org to see some of
the quilt-related things going on in St. Louis, our Guild and elsewhere.
We meet at Concordia Lutheran Church, 505 South Kirkwood Road at 7:00 pm on the
second Friday of each month, unless changes are announced in the newsletter or on
the website.
Doors open at 6:30 pm. Guild meetings are open to non-members, free for the first visit
(unless the program involves a national speaker), and $3 per visit thereafter. A $5 fee
is charged whenever a national speaker gives the program. Membership dues are $30
per year.
A pre-meeting dinner is held at O’Charley’s restaurant, 1242 South Kirkwood Road,
starting between 5:00 and 5:15 pm. If you decide to join us, please let the staff at
O’Charley’s know you are with “the quilters”

Programs
IMPORTANT NOTE: For our upcoming May 11, 2018 program, an auction, of vintage quilts/tops/blocks, quilt kits and UFOs, is being planned. Proceeds will be used to defray expenses for bringing in national speakers. This is your opportunity to free yourself of and give a good home to those deserving items which you know you’ll never take the time to complete. Mary Ellen Adams and I have already received some great donations, but still ask for your donations. Please do your part to help make this a successful event, by remembering to bring your donations to our December guild meeting. No junk, please!
December 8, 2017, Holiday Party - Come socialize while learning a new skill. All necessary tools and supplies will be provided for each of us to make something special that we can either donate to charity OR keep for ourselves with a donation of $15.00. February 9, 2018, Will McDonald of Just Sew-Sewing Machine Repair & Professional Sharpening Service will present his lecture “Back to the Basics: Classic sewing machines in a modern era” discussing some of the benefits of vintage sewing machines relative to the modern electronic devices available today-- and why people from hobbyists to entrepreneurs are switching back! Will, a full-time repairman, will focus on the know-how involved with choosing and using older style machines so new shoppers and experienced owners alike will be able to employ them with confidence. He will be bringing his scissor sharpening setup and providing his sharpening services to us. The price for normal scissors is $7 per pair, $10 for pinking shears. So, don’t forget to bring your scissors, shears, and cash for payment.

March 9, 2018, Our own guild member, Louise Morris, will present a lecture and trunk
show. She says, “An obsessive crafter from an early age morphed into a quilter. Over
sixty quilts and dozens of workshops later I have amassed lots of tricks, great references and favorite shortcuts and notions, as well as an attempt to answer how to develop a unique style in a culture of mass media distractions! I will present a trunk show, a handout, and a peek at my "orphanage" and "incubator ". Intrigued? Stay tuned!” April 13, 2018, Carol Moellers, International Quilt Instructor & Designer will present a lecture and trunk show on “Group Quilts”, including two of her award winning group quilts that will entertain and inspire. She will share her personal journey of making an award winning group quilt. Also, she will share the strategies and guidelines a group needs to have in place for making a group contest quilt. Her program is full of tips and valuable information. At the end of her presentation, you will be inspired to gather up a group of friends to create something beautiful together and ready to create memories that will last for a lifetime.

Carol’s lecture will include “The Amazing Aztec-nicolor Dream Quilt”. The Amazing Eight, including guild member Cindy Bell Neville, created this award winning quilt.

May 11, 2018, Auction, with “Kevin the Quilter” as our auctioneer. Bring your bidding cash/checks to get that special antique or vintage quilt related item that you’ve been waiting to buy. You’ll certainly want to get something to turn into an heirloom piece, if you’re planning to take Kelly Cline’s “Quilting Vintage” workshop.
June 8, 2018, Janine Adams, CPO®, founder of Peace of Mind Organizing LLC, who
has appeared on TV shows such as A&E’s “Hoarders”, TLC’s “Hoarding: Buried Alive”,
and KMOV’s “Great Day St. Louis”, will present her lecture, “More Glitter, Less
Clutter”, to help you figure out how to organize all your quilting supplies to make it easy
for you to find what you need and put items away. She’ll teach you organizing principles that will make it easier for you to get your quilting space organized and keep it that way so that you can shop from your stash and put your hands on your supplies whenever you need them. Kelly Cline of Kelly Cline Quilting and creator of the “Quilting Vintage” Facebook Group will present a lecture and trunk show. Her passion is turning ordinary antique linens and quilts into heirloom pieces. Kelly will have show & tell talking about this wonderful twist on quilting that connects our past and present. If there is enough interest, we can also arrange for Kelly to also lead a workshop, such as “Quilting Vintage! on a Domestic Machine”, which is a class for making a collage with vintage linens, hankies, and embroideries, all sewn and finished on your domestic machine. I am grateful to each of you who took the time to let me know how much you enjoyed the movie & popcorn night. Also, I appreciate everyone’s patience with the popcorn delivery and hope that everyone, who wanted popcorn, enjoyed a bag. Being that this was my first time attempting to accommodate such a large crowd, despite all of my preplanning and testing, there were still some logistical glitches. However, I now realize how I can make it better and believe that it would be more successful when we do this again. Thanks to all of my helpers!

FROM THE PREZ
Winter
As I write this it is the Sunday before Thanksgiving. I love this holiday. No gift giving and
shopping frenzy is involved - just good food that we only have once a year and visiting
with relatives that have gathered here in St. Louis for the family dinner. I like this time of
year and don’t mind the shortening days; I don’t suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective
Disorder) and find the longer nights cozy – giving me more time to sew and stitch and
read beneath a warm throw and a couple of cats.
Several projects are claiming my attention right now. Two are Christmas gifts. One is a
cross stitched stocking for my son-in-law and the other a gift for one of my sisters. I

recently took a workshop with Kevin the Quilter, “Sorta Kinda Amish” which I finished
the day after the workshop. It was easy and fun; Kevin is a very inspiring teacher. On
Black Friday Bonnie Hunter will launch her annual free mystery quilt, her “give back” gift
to her followers. This has a question mark next to it for right now as I haven’t finished
last year’s mystery and am not eager to have another large complicated quilt sitting in
the UFO pile. The colors however, speak to me, so I might have to do a scaled back
version.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the Christmas Party in December. Nancy
has a nice program planned for us that everyone will enjoy. You don’t have to bring a
thing, just a holiday attitude! And don’t forget that the President’s Challenge quilts are
due at the December meeting as well. I can’t wait to see what you have created.

There were 69 people, including three guests, in attendance at the November meeting.
Our guests included Laura Andrew, Carol Million, and Rea Lizenby.

People can continue to renew their membership but the membership directory has been
published. Directories and membership cards may be picked up at the membership
desk. If there are mistakes in the directory please let us know. Checks made out to
Thimble & Thread Quilt Guild for $30 may be sent to Kathy Sherrick, 228 W Woodbine
Ave, Kirkwood MO to renew your membership. Forms may be printed off the website.

The meeting was called to order by President, Mary Ellen Adams.
Old Business -
Minutes for the October Meeting were approved.
New Business –
Mary Ellen announced that the National Quilt Museum is collecting Antique quilts for an
upcoming auction. Please check details on their website if interested.
President's Challenge is due at the December meeting.
Announcements followed Business portion.

Denise Poepsel reported 18 Disappearing Nine Patch Blocks were collected. The December Optional Block will be “Candy Wrapper”.
Terry Weiersmueller showed fabric raffle fat quarter from Susie Q Quilt Shop.

Program-
I love the smell of a fabric shop but the next best thing is fresh popcorn. A big thank you
goes out to Nancy Hamilton and her husband for our movie night. The movie “Georgia
Quilts Stitches and Stories” was a wonder reminder of our history and reasons we quilt.
It was inspiring to just relax and be energized and humbled by such wonderful ladies
and men who kept the quilting going.
After the Program -
Deborah Carnes and Mike Tebeau won the Fabric Raffle.
Nancy Reeves won the Optional Blocks.

We're taking a break from the holiday music that surrounds us this time of year and
doing a block inspired by a very popular Elton John song. This easy pattern will go
together quickly and allow you plenty of time for all the seasonal festivities. Hint: one of
the block colors is mentioned in the song lyrics--can you guess which one?

Free Stuff
I have a sewing machine cabinet that I got from Eunice Farmer Fabrics years ago. It is
in nearly perfect condition but I no longer use it. I would like to offer it for free to anyone
who can come pick it up from my house. It is in my basement and I need help to get it
up the stairs. I would like to find it a good home. Please let me know. You can contact

Comfort Quilt Projects for 2016-2017
Our January Guild meeting will be a Sew-In. We will iron and cut fabric and layout quilt
tops in our regular meeting room and will do the sewing and assembly ironing the
Atrium Room. You, the members, can do a little prep work beforehand. We will make
Disappearing 9-patch blocks, so we need 9-patch blocks made up in advance (either
finished 9” square or 12” square). There will be a sign up sheet at the December
meeting – we need to know who will bring a sewing machine, cutting mat, rotary cutters,
ironing board, irons, rulers, design walls - all items that we can share.
Also, the only Show & Tell we will do at the January meeting will be to display what
we’ve accomplished that night. We want to allow as much time as possible for sewing.
Just a reminder that we are making quilts for two organizations this year:
Nurses for Newborns (size 2-ft by 3-ft)
Home Sweet Home (size 4-ft by 5-ft or 5’ft by 6’ft; basically a throw size)

Far more than just bedcovers, quilts were made with careful consideration.
Commemorating personal events, remembering friends, broadcasting status and
displaying skill, quilts oftentimes provided details of a woman’s life which would have
otherwise been lost to time. They act as important representations of the American spirit
in art, worthy of recognition and regard. Motifs and practices shown throughout the
history of fine art can be found in abundance in these carefully crafted textiles, both as a
continuance of past styles and as a precursor to artistic movements that would not be
popularized for decades to come.
Threads of Society: American Quilts and the Stories They Tell will feature several quilts
from the Field House Museum collection, dating within the nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries. The exhibition will express the story of quilting in American society,
focusing on the recognition of quilts as historic and artistic materials.
