Saturday | September 25 They Have Arrived: 10,000 Scouts get settled into Campaganza’s tent” city” By Faith Cotter On the warm, sunny Friday evening of September 24, most kids are just get- ting out of school and heading home for the weekend. That’s not the case with the scouts that arrived for Campaganza. School’s out and they’re free with the last chime of the dismissal bell but instead of going home they get to spend the weekend camping with thousands of other Boy Scouts and this Friday night they’re pitching tents, tackling each other during a football game by the lake, and looking forward to shooting archery, going canoeing, and scaling the rock climbing wall. “ I want to do everything!” said Chance Burke of Troop 300 based out of Ty- rone, Pa. He’s looking forward to the new friends he’ll make from the other councils. “I want to camp site hop,” he said with a smile and then added, “With a buddy.” His brother Chase is looking forward to meeting members of the U.S. mili- tary. “I’m excited to meet the National Guard, and to learn more about NAS- CAR,” he said. Just unloading their gear after mak- ing the journey to Moraine from their hometown of Latrobe, brothers James and Daniel Pochial and fellow Troop 304 member Cole Fredrich were busy connecting the frames of their tent together, Daniel Pochial completely at home in the setting. The Scouting for Food drive is turning out better than expected. At six thirty, there were already two long tables filled with food and approximately $2000 had been collected.

“We weren’t expecting this much,” com-mented Trevor Gobbins of troop 860, “and this is just from the people coming in! Exciting and unbelievable at the same time.”

Be PreparedBy Ruth Blum and Faith Cotter

Here at Campaganza 2010, staff has made sure that they are prepared for everything. From dialing 911 to med centers to a military unit set up in the Program Area, they have covered all their bases.

“We have the equivalent of trauma centers,” Dan Fitzhenry of the Campaganza health and safety staff stated. “We have the Army med center at the beach, a fire department set up, fifty security personnel…” The health and safety personnel on-site includes an EMS branch, fire crews, security and safety officers, and medical and marine personnel. There are also security cameras and radio communication as well as off-site contact. “If you’re a vehicle operator, watch out for scouts. If you’re a scout, watch out for vehicles.”

“We’re all volunteers. We don’t do this for the pay. We do this be-cause it’s a great organization and we love watching the kids go,” said Knox Walk, also a part of the health and safety staff.

While at camp, please remember to always have a buddy. There are four medical stations located throughout the Campaganza grounds which are located on the maps in Subcamps 4, 5, 6, and 7. In case of emergencies, dial 911.

“It’s really cool. There’s a lot going on. They’re going to take great care of us,” says Mike Santrelli. He and Bobby Golden from Troop 53 drove all the way from Boston with Golden’s dad just to be here. In Golden’s words, “They’re ready for anything. It’s all part of being prepared.”

“Since I couldn’t make it to the jamboree, this was the next best thing,” he said, and went back to helping his troop mem-bers finish pitching the brightly colored structures that make up Campaganza’s impermanent but sure to be remembered city of tents.

Members of U.S. military connect with Campaganza scoutsBy Faith Cotter

Lieutenant Archinel said her son knew at just ten years old that he would join the army, and when he grew up that’s ex-actly what he did.

Scouting, Archinel said, helped to build the foundation for her son’s dream.

“He loved it. He learned a lot, and even taught me how to read a compass the right way after he learned how to read one in Scouts,” Archinel said.

Archinel is a part of the volunteer medical staff for Campagan-za, and on Friday afternoon, she ran into her son’s former troop and was given a warm welcome from the scouts of Troop 252.

“They ran over, so excited to see me. They didn’t even know I was in the army!” she said.

Later that evening Archinel, along with Sergeant Ryan, also

of the U.S. Army, stood next to a vehicle filled with medical supplies answering questions from curious scouts and giving tours of the LMTV parked nearby.

Ryan is impressed with the sheer number of scouts camping on the premises.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” he said. “10 thousand scouts is such a big number.”

Though Ryan does not have a history of scout-ing, the connection of the values and learning tools that exist between the Boy Scouts and the military are obvious to him.

“There’s a lot of skills learned within Scouting to take into the military,” Ryan said. “Even things like tying different kinds of knots.”

“Our values are the same,” Archinel said. “Duty to country, the importance of honor. It’s military based without being in the military.”

Not far from where the lieutenant and the Sergeant stood, a game of football was starting up between some of the military members and the scouts, and Ian Blevins of Troop 538 didn’t want to be left out.

“I’m gonna go play football with the army people!” he said, and ran off to join them.
