OUR PASTOR ’S PAGE

The Kind of Freedom Tyrants Hate Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, During the first half of the 20th Century, Plutarco Calles, President of Mexico, launched a vicious attack against the Catholic Church. (I recommend that you watch the 2012 film For Greater Glory aka “Cristiada”.) Calles was an ideological Marxist and saw the Catholic Church as a threat to his power. Why? Because the Catholic Church instructs her children that they do not belong to this world; she forbids them from conforming their lives to its stand-ards. Real Christians (like Catholics) have a kind of freedom that political messiahs (like Calles) hate. Our only fear is sin, and the only One who can control us is Christ. His power does not hold us bound; His power sets us free and sets us on fire for the truth. So, what did Calles do to persecute the Catholic Church in Mexico? First, he set up a rival version of Catholicism. This meant giving a “watered-down” version where a person’s political party and adherence to a political leader are more important than being a Catholic. Second, he forbade Catholic schools and enforced that his Marxist agenda be taught in pub-lic schools. Third, he enforced a form of political correctness: no one could use religious lan-guage in public (like saying “Adios”). Fourth, he exiled most priests and religious from Mexi-co, and when they resisted, he killed them either by firing squad or hanging. Churches were burned, statues were bashed, and the Blessed Sacrament was desecrated. Finally, the Cris-teros movement began to counter Calles’ tyrannical rule. From 1926-1929, 90,000 people shed their blood for love of faith and country in Mexico. This is just one part of history of Christianity’s battle with the powers of this world. So, why am I preaching about this today? Because our Lord makes it very clear in the gospel that He does not come to give us “wishy washy” teachings, to make us indifferent to right and wrong, or to just be “nice.” “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” (Lk 12:49). Our Lord wants us to be on fire for the truth — not sleepy, bored Catholics! “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division” (Lk 12:51) Our Lord is telling us we can never make peace with this world. His is a peace that the world cannot give — not our President, not our political party, not our homes or our cars or our hobbies, not even our spouse or boyfriend or girlfriend. On-ly Jesus gives us true peace. If we do not have this peace now, then we need to invite Christ into our lives now. Per-secution will come and is already here. Let Christ take possession of your heart now, and let Him set your heart on fire.

El tipo de Libertad que Tiranos odian Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, Durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, Plutarco Calles, Presidente de México, lanzó un cruel ataque contra la Iglesia Católica. (Les recomiendo ver la película deI 2012 For Greater Glory aka “Cristiada”.) Calles era un ideólogo marxista y veía a la Iglesia Católica como una amenaza a su poder. ¿Por qué? Porque la Iglesia Católica les enseña a sus hijos que ellos no pertenecen a este mundo; les prohíbe conformar sus vidas con sus valores. Los verda-deros Cristianos (como los Católicos) tienen una clase de libertad que los mesías políticos (como Calles) odian. Nuestro único temor es al pecado, y el Único que puede controlarnos es Cristo. Su poder no nos esclaviza; Su poder nos libera y nos enciende en el fuego por la verdad.

Entonces, ¿qué hizo Calles para perseguir a la Iglesia Católica en México? Primero, armó una versión rival del Catolicismo. Es decir, presentó una versión “diluida” según la cual el partido político de una persona y la adherencia a un líder político son más importan-tes que ser Católico. Segundo, prohibió las iglesias Católicas e hizo obligatoria la enseñan-za de su agenda marxista en las escuelas públicas. Tercero, impuso una forma de correc-ción política: nadie podía usar lenguaje religioso en público (como decir “Adiós”). Cuarto, mandó al exilio a la mayoría de los sacerdotes y religiosos de México, y cuando se resistían, los mataba fusilándolos o ahorcándolos. Las iglesias fueron incendiadas, las estatuas rotas, y el Santísimo Sacramento profanado. Finalmente el movimiento de los Cristeros comenzó a oponerse a las tiránicas reglas de Calles. De 1926 a 1929, 90,000 personas derramaron su sangre por amor a su fe y a su país en México. Esto es solo una parte de la historia de las batallas del Cristianismo contra los poderes de este mundo.

Y, ¿por qué estoy predicando sobre esto hoy? Porque nuestro Señor nos dice clara-mente en el evangelio que Él no viene a darnos enseñanzas “diluídas” a hacernos indiferen-tes al bien y al mal, o simplemente a ser “amables.” “He venido a traer fuego a la tierra y ¡cuánto desearía que ya estuviera ardiendo!” Nuestro Señor quiere que nosotros estemos ardiendo por la verdad — no que seamos Católicos soñolientos, aburridos! “¿Creen ustedes que he venido a establecer la paz en la tierra? Les digo que no; más bien he venido a traer división.” Nuestro Señor nos está diciendo que nunca podemos hacer las paces con este mundo. La suya es una paz que el mundo no puede dar — ni nuestro Presidente, ni nuestro partido político, ni nuestros hogares ni nuestros carros ni nuestros pasatiempos, ni siquiera nuestro esposo o novio o novia. Solamente Jesús nos da verdadera paz.

Si no tenemos esta paz ahora, entonces necesitamos invitar a Cristo a vivir en noso-tros ahora. La persecución vendrá y ya está aquí. Dejen que Cristo tome posesión de su corazón ahora, y permítanle que lo prenda en el fuego de su amor.

masses on Sunday September 8, 2019 until 1 PM. Why not take a break

from cooking and enjoy the best chicken dinner in town. We recommend

you buy your tickets prior to the day of the event to ensure you have your

chicken to enjoy. Simply look for the Knights of Columbus after each mass

for the next 3 weekends, they will be wearing the blue Knights of Columbus

shirts.
