THEWEEK@SAINTBENEDICT Dear Parents and Carers Welcome to another week at Saint Benedict and I hope you all had an enjoyable Bank Holiday Weekend. We have lots of staff and students to congratulate in the bulletin this week with many successes for our staff and students. Firstly, a big well done to your Year 8 Basketball team consisting of · Alex Horsley, Nelwin Nedungatt, Antonio Braz, Dylan Pope, Joaquin Barawed, Eliezer Espayos and Simeon Perry who played in the U13 Derbyshire Basketball final last week and were crowned champions beating Queen Elizabeth Grammar School 48 points to 10! A big well done to Miss Layden who has been nominated for Teacher of the Year Award in the Derby Telegraph Community Champions. You may remember, Miss Layden recreated a dance from her wedding which was used by Music Producer Sigala and went viral on YouTube. Over the years Miss Layden has been such a source of inspiration to many students and it is wonderful to see this being recognised. We have so many great teachers here who regularly go the extra mile for their students so it’s great to see their passion for the profession being acknowledged. We had many students out and about over the weekend completing their expeditions for the Duke of Edinburgh award. One group were walking around the White Peak, and the other were above the Ladybower area. Thanks to our staff Mr Robinson, Mr Hilton, Mr Williamson & Miss Smith for making it happen. Our 100 Year 10 prefects are now fully badged up and trained and have started their duties about the school. They have already been a great support to staff and are proving to be excellent role models to our younger students. They have also taken some pressure off the Year 11 prefects who are now in the final run in to their exams. Year 9 student Charlotte Hall was at the Midlands swimming finals last week. Charlotte did really well qualifying for two finals, the 50m free and the 50m backstroke coming 8 th in both. She also came 7 th in her age group for the 400m Individual Medley. What’s more impressive is that for many of the events, Charlotte was competing against students who were a year older than her. A superb effort Charlotte, well done. You may also have seen one of the headlines relating to an incident which took place a number of weeks ago in school reported in the Derby Telegraph. I’d just like to reiterate that this is the first incident of this kind I have had to deal with in seven years at this school. The boy concerned brought a small penknife to school and has now been permanently excluded. We do however take the safety of our students and staff very seriously and do not tolerate this kind of behaviour at Saint Benedict. If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. As always, if you have any stories of your children’s success at school or out of school which you would like us to share, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] . Thanks as always for your support and have a good week Kevin Gritton Headteacher ISSUE NO 11 3 May 2016

THEWEEK@SAINTBENEDICT

Dear Parents and Carers Welcome to another week at Saint Benedict and I hope you all had an enjoyable Bank Holiday Weekend.

We have lots of staff and students to congratulate in the bulletin this week with many successes for our staff and students.

Firstly, a big well done to your Year 8 Basketball team consisting of · Alex Horsley, Nelwin Nedungatt, Antonio Braz, Dylan Pope,

Joaquin Barawed, Eliezer Espayos and Simeon Perry who played in the U13 Derbyshire Basketball final last week and were

crowned champions beating Queen Elizabeth Grammar School 48 points to 10!

A big well done to Miss Layden who has been nominated for Teacher of the Year Award in the Derby Telegraph Community

Champions. You may remember, Miss Layden recreated a dance from her wedding which was used by Music Producer Sigala and

went viral on YouTube. Over the years Miss Layden has been such a source of inspiration to many students and it is wonderful to

see this being recognised. We have so many great teachers here who regularly go the extra mile for their students so it’s great to

see their passion for the profession being acknowledged.

We had many students out and about over the weekend completing their expeditions for the Duke of Edinburgh award. One group

were walking around the White Peak, and the other were above the Ladybower area. Thanks to our staff Mr Robinson, Mr Hilton,

Mr Williamson & Miss Smith for making it happen.

Our 100 Year 10 prefects are now fully badged up and trained and have started their duties about the school. They have already

been a great support to staff and are proving to be excellent role models to our younger students. They have also taken some

pressure off the Year 11 prefects who are now in the final run in to their exams.

Year 9 student Charlotte Hall was at the Midlands swimming finals last week. Charlotte did really well qualifying for two finals, the

50m free and the 50m backstroke coming 8th in both. She also came 7

th in her age group for the 400m Individual Medley. What’s

more impressive is that for many of the events, Charlotte was competing against students who were a year older than her. A

superb effort Charlotte, well done.

You may also have seen one of the headlines relating to an incident which took place a number of weeks ago in school reported in

the Derby Telegraph. I’d just like to reiterate that this is the first incident of this kind I have had to deal with in seven years at this

school. The boy concerned brought a small penknife to school and has now been permanently excluded. We do however take the

safety of our students and staff very seriously and do not tolerate this kind of behaviour at Saint Benedict. If you have any

concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks as always for your support and have a good week
